I am after some advice from Old bulls..

After 11 years away from the motocross track, a few of the boys I ride with have managed to talk me into a foray at the HVMCC motocross club day a few weeks ago. I went out on the old faithful RFS KTM450EXC and had a blast, unfortunately had 2 DNFS (bar riser bolt snapped, and goggle lense popped out after copping a face full of roost) and wound up destroying a clutch in the final race of the day (still finished!)

Despite being sore and sorry for about 3 days after, I really enjoyed it and now I have finally repaired the KTM (New clutch plates, new bars, new fork seals and a broken clutch perch) and talked to the minister for all things financial, and have managed to secure myself around 5 grand from the tax man to invest in either a used race bike, or update the old girl..

I intend on doing probably one race a month and (given I ran in the lead group of C grade and mid pack in opens I’m guessing B grade level MX), yet I still love the single track riding around wauchope (technical riding.. no open trails for me) so the options are..

    * Trade the KTM on a newer enduro bike get the suspension done on it so it will do both (Is it possible?)
    * A mate has a very tidy 2008 CRF450 for around 4500, spend the change getting the suspension done
    * Spend the dosh in rebuilding the KTM
    * Talk to rocks motorcycles see if they can look after me on a used race bike ;)

any advice would be greatly appreciated

Trying to shorten your riding career?
    Keen Mate Keen ….
Just upgrade the trail bike, the new ones are good fun on an MX track, might need a set of heavier springs but at least you have a new bike for both options
Why not a 300 2 banger? (I’d love to see you on the singles at Taree on one of those!!)

You mean I could take the Berg TE300 (when it arrives) motocross racing at HVMCC?? Re-live the glory days!!

Sign me up! … Do you need a racing licence (haven’t had one of those for a looooong time)?

Sell the KTM and get a 300 Berg 2T, need more blue and yellow in this place.

Id love a 300 2 stroke, but theres not much chance of getting the coin to stretch far enough to get me on one..

It cost $100 for the day, and that covered the day license and let me ride two classes for the day (C grade and over 300 class), and if your like me and haven’t raced for a looong time its a lot of track time.. (racing got harder on the body I think)

Mick I still havent discounted the old husky, I could pour some coin into the suspension and make a hell of a race bike out of her… too many options…

the 300 berg will do great for both, i had a 2010 ktm 300(same bike different forks) and all i did was put the hard spring in the powervalve and it made it snappy for the track, stiffen the supension witha couple of clicks on the rebounds and compressions, wack one of the other springs in for the coditions of the bush your riding and you can tame it down or keep it snappy what ever you like and with the other needles and jets that come with the bike you can pretty much set it up for type of riding you want
as for the racing the clubs will either want you to be a member or some do a day club membership plus an event fee on the day as for the licence you either rock up for the day and pay a day licence (last one i paid was $44 all up would be about a $100 for the day
) or as i have just done full senior licence willset you back $285( they have just gone up)
the other thing you can do as well is pay for the day licence at $44 see what you think and if those old glory days come back for you and all is good and you want to go ahead with a full licence for 12 months as long as you apply within a fortnight of when you bought your original day licecnce you can claim this $44 off you annual licence fee and it will come down $241 ive just gone through this in the last month
and micks right the 300s have some poke but i got a honda CR 250 to go racing with and still trying to come to grips with its aggressive power delivery compared to the 300 …… but its bloody fun

I do have a few used mx bikes that we really need to turn into cash!
We just sold an immaculate 08 for $4000 so I think 4500 private is up there.
Check http://www.rockmotorcycles.com.au and click used bikes, there’s an 09 crf250r that was my brother in laws. It’s done very little riding and he’s not a hard rider(runs back of pack in o 35). It has white plastics but we have another set of stock ones if u want them. No trade we will do a good discount off any of them.
