Due to my ambitions continuing to overtake my abilities, I took advantage of an opportunity to purchase a Leatte Neck Brace.
I wore it for the first time on the recent Watagans ride.
This is my experience.
It was important to take the time to set up the fitment of the brace properly first. That meant wearing what ever get up you usually ride in and setting up the front brace, the rear brace and the neck diameter as required. A bud to assist makes it easier.
I wore it with the 661 under jersey armour, with the brace under the jersey. Thanks Guru (aka TB )for setting it up.
With it set up properly, it felt great all day long – and boy it was long, especially after about a hundred tar top kilometers! (on top of the hundred and twenty plus dirt ones)
Standing or seated, it was fine, no problems with range of normal movement. It does slightly restrict your ability to see what is behind you, so you need to turn your body a little more than if you weren’t wearing it. At one point the track passed under a large fallen tree, I didn’t duck my head enough, the rear fin on my helmet whacked the tree and flicked my head back. I did feel the rear brace put pressure down my back and my shoulders load up. So I guess that’s exactly what it’s designed to do – redirect and limit any force to your neck.
My first impressions are: I’m extremely happy with how it feels, to the point where I forgot I had it on.
I need to work out what order to put things on in though – like whether to put on the brace before the jersey or what? A few more rides will have it sorted.
The way I see it, I’ve only got one life, and the quality of it depends upon my state of health and fitness. More importantly, it effects the lives of my family and friends – So, if something is available that can prevent a stupid mistake damaging me whilst I’m on the bike (or coming off it!) then, $550.00plus is well worth it!
Watagans – top day out, top variety of riding, top lunch stop, good lessons learnt, great bunch of ‘Old Bulls’.
