Mother Nature can be a real Beatch! There, I said it.
I just went out to check my local loop after our latest storm and it is a complete log jam. Head up a single track, squeeze around a few, over some others, only to be confronted by an impassable one on the next bend. Turn around, repeat in reverse and try the next trail. Same shit.
It is a complete shutdown and as my tyre tracks seem to be the only ones I ever see out there it is up to me and me alone.
So far this year we have had three storms of which two were deemed natural disaters and one was called the 1 in 100 year storm. It has been a rough one rain wise but it was the wind in the last front that really made a mess. It was so sad to see so much devestation out there. Pristine single track turned into a timber mill.
If anyone has any good chainsaw advice I am keen to hear it as I have never used one before and have a healthy respect of just how dangerous they could be.
Cheers

May 30, 2009 at 6:46 am #137304dont grab on to the end that is spinning really fast!
nah seriously you should talk to TB his step dad is a chain saw instructor.
May 30, 2009 at 6:59 am #137310Take a little one out with you.
(Oh and a first aid kit and someone who’s qualified to use said kit! I’m scared sh1tless of chainsaws! They’re like sharks…but with motors!!!!!)
May 30, 2009 at 7:06 am #137313your all pusys the trick with chainsaws is a sharp chain and fresh fuel and some comensence in my opinion chainsaw=hardwork not cutting the logs but moving them
May 30, 2009 at 7:11 am #137314Dont wear any loose clothing like a scarf seen that before.
Remember that the branch will bind on to the saw if it isnt supported so that one end can drop away
The spikes at the end of the blade attached to the body of the saw shold rest against the log so the saw dosnt et draged in
Make sure the saw is sharp
Dont go alone.May 30, 2009 at 7:12 am #137317I don’t surf or use chainsaws.
That makes me a pussy with all my arms and legs attached!

May 30, 2009 at 8:08 am #137334they are not that bad, its just that some people are idiots and use them with no regard to the dangers. just be careful and it will be ok.

Quote:How big are the logs STM,cant you ride over them? There is not a trials rider in the world who could get over some of these. Some are thicker in diameter than me and hung across the trail at waist height so there is no going under, no going over, and they are so big that most make going around impossible plus I would rather not start doing that as it means breaking young trees rather than getting rid of the fallen one.
Sounds like I have some work ahead of me.

June 13, 2009 at 11:52 am #137362What a difference a month can make!
I went out today and as if by magic all the trees were cut up. The trails were perfect loam and the log jam was cleared.
Don’t know who did it but I owe them big time because my local is back to it’s best form.
Happy Days:)
