Another classic day out on the bikes, here on the Mid north coast!!
Mucoff Mike and his mate from Perth who’s name also happens to be Mike contacted me about having a ride yesterday and I was keen to have another 100km bash around dirtbike Nirvana after last weekends fun.
We met up at the usual meeting spot for a Bago run and we had two more starters, those being Dickie and Old mate. After the rain during the week Bago was a bit wetter than it usually is but the conditions were perfect albeit a bit bloody slippery in places. A bit of open stuff for starters had us warmed up before we hit the tighter singles and all was going good until Old Mate got a call that required him to peel off and head home (hopefully all is well with his daughter).
Now with only 4 riders, we headed of towards Comboyne via Big Jurassic, which is always fun no matter what the conditions are, unless you drop your bike and realize the battery has gone flat and you have to kick start a CRF450X. Eventually Mike got the CRF to clear itself and fire into life and we continued along the sweet but off camber trail that is Big Jurassic.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=js92851Xnvw&list=UUGhGy_fYv8dpJhEHCP8Wd2w&index=1&feature=plpp_video
We did a bit of the Old Poker Run trails before we headed onto Byabarra and up Rowan‘s Hill, a very steep 2km hill, that has been recently graded and it is now a tonne of fun, as I think whoever graded it, rides dirt bikes and the erosion mounds are just perfect for getting some air!
Once up on the range we headed down some new trails that I found last weekend, it was in the 2nd new trail that I dropped the XR for the first time of the day, as I tried to get up a steep bank I got caught up on a root and I ran out of leg length and I had to drop the pig on the ground. Got it started with minimal fuss and we were under way again and heading for new trail number 3.
New trail number 3, is a long descent into a valley, that ends with a very steep section that drops into a small creek, as I started down this particular section it became obvious that it was seriously slippery and the XR was going faster than the wheels were turning!! I hit the creek going very much faster than I had planned and when I hit the creek the XR stopped rather abruptly and threw me clean over the hangers and I landed unceremoniously on my back in the mud.
Once I showed everyone what not to do they all had a go at it with varying degrees of success. Mucoff Mike on his TT600 made it look easy and rode down the hill and up and around were the XR and I were stuck fast in the mud.Mike and the CRF had a few issues in the gully.
He eventually got it sorted and rode up the greasy rut to safety.Dickie also had some grief in the snotty section too.
We eventually got out of there and made our way to Comboyne rock and again the view was awesome. From there we started to make our way back towards town, via some really excellent fast flowing singles that see bugger all traffic.
It was along this section that I had another “incident” where I was struck in the face by an unknown object, I am presuming it was a tree branch but am still unsure. All I know is that it hurt like a bitch and opened me up like a beauty and the blood was flowing profusely from my nose!
This morning I look like I was engaged in a pub fight of some sort!!
Anyhow once I stopped the bleeding we got going again and we headed off into some lower sections of Bago, where it was very wet. It was here that I had my biggest come off for the day, when I lost the front end in a muddy rut at speed and I soon found myself tumbling in a commando roll through the scrub, much to the delight of the fellas that were following me! No harm done and we were soon under way again.
We headed back up over Bago and down the “face” which is a very rocky down hill, with a few gnarly step-downs that keep you on your toes. Everyone made it down with no dramas and we were ready to call it quits for the day.
After 92kms we found ourselves back at the carpark then back at my shed for a debrief and a few beers, which also include the mandatory laughs and shit slinging!
Thanks boys, another top day out with a great group of blokes.

There’s an old adage ” if you don’t crash, you aren’t trying hard enough”. Either that, or I am having a few extra gumby moments of late.
After 280kms of that stuff in the last week, I suspect even the best of us, would have a moment or two.
June 30, 2012 at 7:14 pm #225248Top day Mick, thanks for that.
Great to meet to two Milke’s and Lindsay, great guys.
Listening to the XT effortlessly going tick, tick, tick up one of the long hills following a single line with the ktm jumping all over the track behing him would have to be one of my highlights.July 1, 2012 at 1:55 am #225282Good report Mick, Jeffro is righti think better concentrate more and look after yourself mate can’t get away with that shit to much at our age ( was being nice as you are much older
