I’ve put a 1000km on the XR since installing the 38mm Mikuni. I am very happy with its performance. No more bog of jumps (like Chicken said) and the tendancy to “cough stall”in tighter sections is all but eliminated. It also holds it’s own, head to head, power wise with the bro on the KTM530 going up hills.
Only one concern has come to light and that is, it is pinging to buggery if it labours going up hill, especially if you just wind the throttle on without knocking it back a gear.It seems to be the most noticable between 1/2 and 3/4 throttle. I have only noticed this above about 300 meters. I live at sea level and have a 210 main jet in it and i haven’t noticed it pinging here.
From what I have read, I am presuming this is being caused by a lean condition.
The question is, should I be putting a bigger main in it like a 220 and or am I barking up the wrong tree and should I be dicking around with the mixture screw instead?

hey Mick wasnt the 210 the biggest main they had in the kit to try, it isnt that high where you are really, its not that different (if you wish to marry your sister thats ok there ;) ) If its idling ok etc mixture couldnt be out that far, ring fathead at Battye’s and tell him trackbolt told you to ring

Na they sent a 220 as well.It is running and idling sweet but the ping is giving me the shits as I tend to concentrate on the noise and not the trail.
BTW I didn’t marry my sister but did marry my next door neighbour!!!! She was the only good sort around that wasn’t related to me!!!

hay haw are ya . try lifting the needel clip down one grove .when the slide is betwen 1/2 to 3/4 most of the fule metering is done by the jet needel. if it is not pining at full throttel dont think it wood be the mane jet . all so thave you checked your ignion timing:)

I got it sorted by putting a bigger pilot jet in it 12.5 to 15. Lifting the needle made it too rich and it was blowing black smoke. The pilot jet made it go even better and fixed the mid range ping so good, the first time I rode it with that jetting I flipped the bastard and am still in plaster:ohmy:

Missed this thread too, glad you got it sorted Mick. As TB said it wouldn’t have been the altitude as 300m wouldn’t make much of a difference. I’m surprised the pilot sorted it though whe the issue was at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. Whatever works I guess…..

Geoff Ballard suggested that I lift the needle first but it ran a mile too rich and used fuel like anything, I had to switch to reserve at 90km instead of 120km. It was also blowing black smoke to. I also dropped one size on the main jet from 210 back to 200, I only got to ride it for 7km with these settings before it sat me on my arse.:S

I need to re-jet my bike, she’s running lean and it won’t be good for her. I’ll sort a few things out whilst I can’t ride it.

And your still trying to pin your injury on the power of the bike…pffttt!

AS TB so eloquently put it “It was obviously a case of to much power in the hands of an idiot”
