Hey Gang, okay so after being away from dirt for waaay too long, I decided to get back in the saddle, not only to relive my youth, but also to share some quality time with my “Call of Duty” obsessed 16 yr old son.

So I have managed to find him a bike, its a 250 EXC-F in real good nick. Now I’ve yet to get a bike for meeself, but when I started hunting, given my 100kg 6-2 size, I just thought that a 450 or 525 for me to plod around on while teachin the lad would be the obvious choice.

Well heres the thing, I’ve stumbled upon a 300 ECF 2 stroker within budget (6k) and in very tidy condition with low hours and am now wondering what to do  …What do you guys reckon?

Given the 250 is a 4 stroke, it prolly makes sense from a maint perspective to get another 4 stroke, but to get a 450 or 525 in similiar condition would kill my budget. So I either go with this low K 300, or have to go with a reasonably used bigger bike

I’d really appreciate some feedback on pros and cons if you don’t mind guys,

    Cheers

    Hey Squizzy
Sounds like you have made an excellent choice for your young fella but a 300cc 2 banger is not really a bike to plod around on. Try finding a KTM 400, WR450 or a DRZ 400 in your budget.

Squizzy you will find a good WR450 for 6k no problems.

    I bought a 07 WR 4fiddy last weekend for 6k .

you will also get a very late model DRZ400 at that money.

the 300 two stroke would be a good bike if you like single track snoty stuff will not nock you up as much as a four stroke in that sort of riding good for old fat people like me but they suck on the road and are prably not as good on firetrails but heaps fun to ride go for the 300 i reckon unless you intend on doing some road riding .go for a test ride and make your own mind up some people hate 2 strokes its up to you if you like it or not

That comes from they rode with a gasser 300 today that used 10 litres and went onto reserve at 70kms, ran out at 80 something I am told.

Storky is right, just make sure you ride it where you will be riding or the same sort of territory. Too many people test ride it around the block it isnt the same  done it myself

WOW, thanks for the speedy responses and excellent advice gang.

Yep good advice, I prolly need to ride them, the last 2T’s I rode was my old restored RD250 “Coffin Tank” road bike and before that a Yam RZ250 (Crazy Powerband) a Yam DT250 and RM370. I do remember they were all good fun …in a straight line at least lol!

I don’t doubt it. The King was implying that that is common for a Kato 300 which is not necessarily so.

Brand new 2 strokes get bad economy until they run in a few hours, jetting makes a big difference. Someone hand over a DRZ400 to me for 30 min I’ll make it chew through fuel like it’s 1969.

I was simply responding to this quote. It was not KTM specific and today I rode 70 km of singles with Gasser 300 with a 10 litre tank and it ran dry.
