There are some places that are special and require revisiting in as many different conditions as possible. Yes we have travelled Albino Rd in perfect weather where every corner was a gallery picture. Soaking rain in cold winter in a fading day and another time the wind almost blew us from the top.
This time Tryhard and myself were treated once again. This time it was all four seasons starting with a warm spring evening with threatening thunder storms leading to soaking rain from every direction. Next came the hail…. small then as big as a 10c piece with a rainbow and sunshine at the same time.
I left the new workshop at Thornton and fought the traffic to meet up with Joe at Singo.
We had left Singleton at 6.00pm abound for Moonan Flat Pub for dinner and to meet Mikep and Steve. These guys were able to leave earlier and were to join up with us at Moonan Pub hopefully just before dark.
By 6.40 the rain and hail had stopped tormenting us and the choice was to go West around Glenbawn Dam along the black top. Or, the “sensible” option to go east up through Upper Rouchel and over the ridge to Stewerts Brook perhaps a little longer. The sun was starting settle into the distant scenery so we took the long way round the east thinking we can always get chips and peanuts at the bar for dinner if we didn’t get to the dining room in time.
The rain had retreated into the hills of the Barringtons and it started raining wild life.
Tortoise, Wallabies, Roos, Rabits, Roos, Possum’s, Roos and Frogs. It was such a different spin for a Friday arvo special event. It got darker and it was decided at the double gates to take the way we hadn’t been before. And it worked out a treat poking us out just up the track a little from Wayne Manner on Stuarts Brook. This is the spot where Lotsa spent the night. The track was a little overgrown and took an effort to navigate but it was a nice easy grade. By this stage it was fully dark and lucky for us the Moon came out from the shadows and with added explosions from the Lightening in the mountains which made it a glorious evening ride. The number of wildlife encounters were too numerous to count but we travelled at a safe enough speed and by the time we reached the Pub the adrenalin was sooo pumped up our eyes were as big as sorsers and took a good feed of ribs and a couple of refreshing ales to calm us down. Mick and Steve had come to our rescue and arranged for us to fuel up which was awesome as it was almost 9.00pm when we rolled in and we just scraped in for dinner. `Breakfast was ordinary as they forgot to leave milk or bread out for us. Water on coco pops and some chutney on some stale rolls was the best feed we had all day.
The Barringtons shrouded in foggy cloud was what we looked up into as we sweeped the winding road up to the Dingo Gate.
That was the last bit of main road for a while as we took Boundary Rd, Butchers swamp Rd, Tubracca Trail ended in a locked gate so we took the Barrington trail back to Bullock Brush Rd and Cruised on Thunderbolts trail. All of these roads and tracks are in fantastic condition with lyre birds flittering on and off the track almost every second bend.
If the fog gave way it looked like the sky was going to open up at any minute so on went the wet weather gear at Paddys Ridge Trail.
Steve picked up a stick in the chain guard so we had a break at this nice spot
Leaf littered trails with no dust. All Smiles.
Tugalow trail was entertaining as it was slippery with heaps of gibber rocks. We had another rest there as someones bike did a quick 180. We were about to turn back but they got it under control.
The fog got heavy and wetter as we tracked along getting deeper into the wilderness
Bloody Steve kept mentioning Bacon and tantalising us with thoughts of food so we did something rare and actually stopped for lunch early. Right on 12.00 and enjoyed a hamburger and coffee at Barrington. They were good too…
Next was a few back roads and back into the Chichester Forrest through Berrico Creek. We usually hang a left after that area but this time we took the right and headed down an infamous named Terrible Billy Rd which had just been graded and was a slide fest.
We cruised down past Frying Pan Creek and to Micks horror we took a left to try and find the Monk from Monkerai. This track was bull dosed and was a sloppy and worrying down hill, that ended being quite fun. Even the abuse over the Bluetooth calmed down to laughter.
I was happy just about all of the tracks had joined up and flowed together nicely. And just hoping this last section came together
Well we did find the road to the Monastery from the path less known
But the gentlemen if you could call them this…. were not keen at all to greet our new friend again.
There was actually the slightest bit of dust snaking our way through Monkerai down to Dungog and we cruised on home from there.
Elevation on Saturday. Lots of ups and downs.
Thanks guys. What a blast.
