Well with work ‘encouraging’ me to take some holidays (happens in these times when you have 4 months of leave accrued) I have been lucky enough to get the entire month of March to do with it whatever I choose. So, what would you do but ride (oh yeah, and mow lawns but will save that for another story).

Now over the last few weeks I had decided to get a new pair of MX boots to replace the old R-Jays road boots and had bought myself a pair of ONeal’s that I had to wear in and had also put some Dunlop 606 knobbies on the bike. So the idea was a short ride to try the boot and tyres without risking going to far adrift and finding that the boots just weren’t right. So here is the story.

The day started alright …………………… I woke up which as dad used to say is always a good way for the day to start.

Looked outside to find it a might cloudy up towards Robertson, but that wasn’t about to stop me and after doing a few things early the weather cleared and so it was onto the road and up towards Meryla for what was intended to be a test of the new boots for the feet and the bike (tyres).

Expecting to find the roads a bit muddy I was very surprised to find that Belmore Falls was dry and dusty, well except for the water crossing that is. ;D

From there is was out and onto Fitzroy Falls before taking the usual turn and usual tracks which again to my surprise showed little sign of the recent rain, save for a few puddles around the usual places all was dry. At one point though I must have scared the crap out of some animal.

Only wanting a short ride it was the usual track and out onto Redhills before taking the deviation onto Gunrock Creek FT and powering along trying to give the tyres a workout and they impressed me no end.

Arriving at the Gunrock Falls FT turn off I decided to have a look as this track gets very muddy after rain, but in truth I was contemplating having a go at that hill again. Well the track was dry, and I mean dry so it was across the creek, up the small hill and onto this little gem of a track.

I even had time to sop and smell the local fauna

Now, from here it isn’t far until you arrive at that hill, the same one where I got third time lucky the last time I tried it.

    There are a few obstacles.

And you do need to pick the right line.

As the alternatives are a bit tougher.

Even those with more driving wheels appear to struggle at times.

Once at the top on the first go (I was mighty pleased) it was a simple little fang out along the track which in its own is always heaps of fun before crossing the road and onto the narrow tracks in that part of the forest. Of course I took a pic there as well.

For some reason I really struggled on this track today as I just could not find a rhythm and found myself well off my usual lines, which was really concerning at the time. But it was only afterwards when thinking about it I realised that the problem was likely the new tyres as they offered so much more grip and subsequent drive that I was faster and simply not reacting for the increased speed (well my story).

Well the boots held up very well and the feet didn’t get sore so along with te tyres providing a major boost both grip and the ensuing confidence it is safe too say that the day was a rollicking success (got to mention that hill again).

Ah well, so where to next.

An excellent report as always Garry. The problem with writing such good reports with good pictures is that it becomes an expectation of you to repeat perform!

Sounds like you had a good ride, and at least you conquered that hill first go this time. If you have the rest of the month off it looks like we can look forward to a few more ride reports :)
