A 40-year-old man was killed when his motorcycle slammed into a wall along the Great Ocean Road yesterday afternoon.
The motorcyclist was travelling between Lorne and Skenes Creek about 2pm when he overtook a Porsche Boxster and clipped a Subaru wagon.
Police said the rider, a 40-year-old Ballarat man, then ploughed into the wall and died before ambulance workers arrived at the scene near Cumberland River.
Sergeant Brian McKiterick, of Torquay police, said traffic was diverted from the coastal route for most of the afternoon.
It is the region’s second motorcycle fatality in days after a single vehicle accident killed a rider on Sunday.
In that incident, a 57-year-old North Geelong man was killed as he travelled east on Cape Otway Rd near Wensleydale-Station Rd in Wurdiboluc.
The man lost control of his motorbike while approaching a right-hand bend and struck a fence about 2.45pm.
On the same day, a 39-year-old man was injured when his motorbike went under a car while travelling towards Anglesea on the Great Ocean Road about 6km east of Lorne. He man suffered leg and shoulder fractures.
Anglesea police Sergeant Kevin Warburton this week urged all motorists, and particularly motorcyclists, to travel safely and more responsibly on the roads.
Yesterday’s fatality takes the state’s road toll to 27 for the year compared to 31 for the same time last year.
lets be safe out there…..on road or trail.
February 3, 2010 at 8:52 pm #170223Not good, 27 for the year is huge considering it’s only early febuary..
February 3, 2010 at 9:03 pm #170225in the riders defence, i just found this…
“The Subaru driver, a 36-year-old woman from Merewether Heights in NSW, is assisting police, who will prepare a report for the coroner.”its actually 28 now chris, there was another this morning
February 3, 2010 at 9:07 pm #170226What does that mean Menace?
February 3, 2010 at 9:25 pm #170227i guess it means the subaru may have been at fault

Quote:i guess it means the subaru may have been at faultNo, it just means the Subaru driver was involved in the incident and police will need to get his/her full version of the events so the coroner has all the information he needs to determine the bike riders cause of death.
February 4, 2010 at 1:35 am #170242I have my own theories on the escalating motorcycle accident rate, and you’ve probably heard them by now, but after the incident with our tractor last fri, two more bad roadie accidents on the weekend around here, including one that ripped the head and barrel of a Beemer twin.
It’s getting a tad rediculous really, and people are dyng and being maimed.

February 4, 2010 at 5:04 am #170252Cheers I went away for a week and missed it.
February 4, 2010 at 8:15 am #170224The Great Ocean Road is one of those must drive roads in Australia. I’m only ten k’s from the start of it and have driven it a number of times. Unfortunately a few riders treat it as their own personal race track. Some of the shit i’ve seen is mind blowing. For cars it is a fairly slow trip with all the bends so some riders get impatient and overtake risking their lives. I’m surprised there are not more deaths on this road. As sad as it is, its not surprising.

And those theories are blue? I think it’s all about riding to your ability, I personally don’t give a crap if I have to slow down because I think I am riding above what I am comfortable I don’t care what people may say or do and I don’t succumb to peer pressure, I think a lot of these guys get out there, they see their “more experienced mate” do something and have to try and keep up or prove something.. Ride to the conditions, ride to your ability is all I’m saying.

February 4, 2010 at 9:29 am #170264i think that when on the road you should try and obay the rules cars are moving targets unlike trees thats why i ride a trail bike and just cut loose in the bush .i think chris is onto something in the post above
February 4, 2010 at 9:52 am #170271The road is not a race track. There are some roads that feel very much like one. Eg the road to the Natural Arch out of Nerang QLD.Minimal intersectons, driveways and lots of sweet corners. I sold my road bike because at 100 kph it felt like you could get off and walk!!! At 100 in the bush sometimes it feels crazy fast. I want to go out and put the hammer down. But on a road bike you cant unless you want to stay in second gear.(legally) If I had a road race circuit close by that could satisfy my requirements. I know i could still hit a tree at 50 and not make it, but at least i have removed cars from the equasion.
February 4, 2010 at 10:17 am #170279Hey Aaron, dont forget trees generally as a rule don’t move. So less chance to hit one, It’s not like they are going to pull out and hit you.
Chris.
