Some pretty cool stuff in this vid too. SM just looks like so much fun I reckon, its a shame that it’d be hard to get into with the lack of tracks around, similar to trials riding in that sense.

Can anyone tell me why you’d want a slipper clutch in SM racing? I would have thought using compression lock ups to help get the back out would be an advantage especially on right handers.

It stops the rear wheel chattering, if you dont have one you knock it down a couple of gears and feed the clutch out slowly. If you just dump the clutch the engine over revs and the rear wheel hops making it hard to ride and control

Yep fair enough. Obviously you’re less likely to get wheel hop on dirt with compression locks but I know that car drifters use it and thought maybe SM would too.

    Thanks.

You don’t want the rear wheel to lock up otherwise it slides out from underneath you all too quickly. The rear has to keep turning and that’s where the slipper clutch helps. If you don’t have a slipper clutch you fan the clutch to control the slide.

Car drifters very rarely use compression lockups to get the car sideways these days, it’s extremely hard on the drive train and they mainly use a hydraulic handbreak then lots of horse power to control and maintain the slide.

Get some motard wheels and have a go mate, it’s fun.

There’s a track at Marulan, near Goulburn. I plan to go to one of the ride days down there in the next couple of months.
