As usual, when TB arrives at my place, I know I am in for an epic weekend.
This weekend has been no different, it started with TB picking me up from work on Friday arvo. It was straight to the shed to stock the fridge with enough refreshments for the weekend.
Once the fridge was stocked and TB had unloaded his gear, we went sat in the pool with a drink which heralded the start of the serious business of getting a bit pissed.
It wasn’t long before the first of the local larrikins that frequent my shed of a Friday arvo started to roll in. RiderX stuck his head in and laughed at TB and I in the pool drinking, he was closely followed by Tripper, Moose, Gasit, Itsagas limped in after pulling a muscle jogging in his lunch break (getting fit is over rated). Leo turned up and so did my Crazy unimoto mate Charlie, another mate Jay was there too, then Fossil still dressed in his Chef’s outfit rolled in the door. So that made 10 of us there, having a few laughs and a fizzy drink or three.A pic from the shed
We where getting well and truly juiced up, when Nate turned up from Nambucca heads carrying a back wheel off his WR450 and a case of rum cans as he wanted TB to lace up the wheel for him. TB got straight onto it and I cranked up the Barbie.
TB was busy grinding out the old spokes and replacing them with new ones, it must have been hard work as he was a lather off sweat and as soon as the job was done the big fella was back in the pool at about 10pm. We had a few more drinks just to finish off the job we had started at 4.30, we were both speaking Swahili when we hit the hay at about 11.30pm.TB on the job of truing the wheel
The lure of the pool was too much for TB
He was pissed enough he thought he saw a UFO so he photographed it

Saturday. dawned clear and hot although there were some threatening clouds in the South. Whilst I had a hot breakfast( coffee and a smoke) TB was busy wiring up my helmet with the blue tooth set up. At 8am the distinctive thump of a XR600 could be heard coming down our drive. We had a laugh at Moose, as he had on his leather jacket from his road bike days 20 years ago. It was a bit tight and it looked like he had the top half of a gimp suit on.
WE headed off towards Ginger’s Creek with me leading the way, I must say it is an unusual experience the first time you have your helmet wired with a Blue tooth unit. Tb was yabbing away in my ear whilst I was cruising along on our way to Long Flat.
Just before the windy bits leading into Long Flat, TB say’s “Watch it, coming round you on the outside” I expected to see the Fiddy roar past me but was surprised when Moose came past with ol Burple going flat out!! TB took up the challenge and was chasing Moose down, in one particular right hander I was impressed to see TB back the Fiddy into the corner in true Motard style, leaving a 20 foot black mark on the road in the process. The run from Long Flat to the bottom of the mountain is a tad boring as there is a long section, that you could easily wind a sports bike out to over the 200 mark. We chose to cruise along at the speed limit as it is a prime spot for the Highway patrol to ambush you from one of their sneaky hides. So to alleviate the boredom of this section, much to my discust , TB broke into song, singing Willie Nelson’s “on the road again’. Not knowing how to turn down the bluetooth I had to endure his singing and whistling until we hit the first of the curves which signal the start of the Mountain. From there the big fella started to concentrate and the singing stopped and the backing into corners began. I hate to admit it but the Fiddy looked great as it slid into the corner and disappeared around the apex.
About 15km into the mountain TB pulled up and we swapped bikes, what a whacky feeling it was too, the difference between a 21” front wheel and a 17” wheel with road tyres was huge!! I felt rather strange and was having trouble coming to grips with a front brake that can make your back wheel come off the ground. The mountain was at its tricky best on Saturday and at times, what looked like a shadow was really a wet spot, so you really had to be on your game. For some reason my mojo wasn’t happening and I was feeling a tad out of sorts on the hill, not like Moose and TB who were peddling along swapping positions like they were having the time of their lives.
Just before Ginger’s creek it started to drizzle with rain and the Gingers Creek shop was a welcome sight, as no sooner did we arrive it started to belt down with rain. We orders a coffee and probably one of the best Bacon and egg rolls I have ever had. While we were waiting for our orders we sat on the varandah as the rain pelted down, during one of TB’s animated story telling moments, the leg snapped off his chair and we witnessed the only fall for the day. We laughed our heads off as TB sheepishly tried to hide the broken chair, the next person who sits on it, is in for a real surprise!!!!
A few sports bikes rolled in while we ate and they informed us that the rain was only at the top of the mountain and it was still dry towards the bottom section, so we grabbed a top up of fuel and headed down the hill. I hate leading on wet tar as I have trouble setting a pace that every one is comfortable with. I sooned worked out I must have been driving Miss Daisy as TB rounded me up and put the pace up a knotch. I was endeavouring to stay with him when a corner came up that was a bit further around than TB had realised and he soon found himself going a bit quick for a wet corner. He used a bit off quick thinking and decided it would be better to run off wide than try and make the corner, risking a lost front end. As I came into the corner, I saw that TB was on the outside of the white posts in amonst the leaf litter and he was still on the gas sending a tonne of leaves and grass skyward!!
We had only gone about 15 km and the sun was out and we were greeted with dry tar again so Moose and TB were on the gas again. Don’t let Moose and his 15 year old XR lull you into thinking he is an easy target. In his hands Ol Burple is a weapon!! Over the Bluetooth TB,let me know in no uncertain terms that Moose was giving him a run for his money. Before we hit the bottom of the mountain Moose and TB swapped bikes and Moose took off in a shower of shit on the fiddy and from there he was setting the pace with me hot in pursuit. TB and I were joking over the bluetooth that Moose wouldn’t stop and TB would have to ride Burple to Wauchope. I said to TB that I would try and catch Moose and pull him up. TB’s response was ”Good luck with that”. Moose slowly pulled away from me and was patienty waiting at the bottom of the hill for TB and I to arrive. With everyone back on their own bikes we headed back towards Wauchope, coming along one particularly long straight, TB showed me his eye sight is better than mine when he spotted a sneaky highway patrol hidden on top of a cutting from a kilometre away, waiting for an unsuspecting motorcyclist to creep over the speed limit so he could make him contribute some of his hard earned into consolidated revenue.
We cruised on into Wauchope and had a quick stop at Mud and Tar before Heading around to Charlies Place to see the progress on his deathtrap unimoto drag bike. The boys also admired his bike collection which includes a couple of trick looking Harleys while we were there too.
Once back at my shed the serious business of re hydrating began again and we spent the rest of the day between the beer fridge and the pool after demolishing two hot chooks. This ritual finished of s great day and it pretty well finished Moose off too, who doesn’t normally drink rum, especially at the speed TB was jamming them into him!! Thanks guys what a great way to spend a Saturday!
The photos were few and far between, I think TB got a couple of the ride so you’ll have to wait until he does his take on the day.
January 31, 2010 at 1:10 am #169935Sounds like a typical friday arvo in your shed to me Mick

Watch those Rumskis Moose :laugh:January 31, 2010 at 7:31 am #169941The only pic I took, TB and Moose at the Ginger’s Creek Retreat.

I know what you mean about that mate, it nearly caught me out on the run to Wisemans last month. And that was just after TB warned me to “WATCH THE FRONT BRAKE” One small finger required there for sure
Good report BTW
Look forward to more pics from the big guyJanuary 31, 2010 at 7:54 am #169952Trailboss wrote:

Quote:Having never really ridden the XR with anything but knobbies,I was having a ball hooting around the corners (Corners that would be at home on a race track) on the trailwings. So much so, on inspection of the tyres when I got home, there wasn’t the tiniest hint of a chicken strip on the rear. :woohoo:A few things come to mind after saturdays ride
– The chicken strips as you called them above after the ride with Moose and I looked wider then your tyre
– You came home with more excuses from the ride then I thought possible (maybe that’s why we spent so much time waiting for you hey Moose )
– It wasnt your tyres either because I passed Moose on your bike
– I was quicker on that chair then you on your bike that’s why it broke when I had it on one leg
Now nick off

You didn’t have too wait long for me, but if that is how you saw it, so be it. :S
Still, you where the only one to hit the deck all weekend, when you stacked the chair.

You were the only one with race numbers on your bike. I wasn’t there to race, I was there to have some fun and not eat shit. Now I gotta wear it.

January 31, 2010 at 10:07 am #169977After my big soap box blurb recently about riding to the conditions on the Mountain.I couldn’t get it out of my head, that it would be just my luck to eat shit riding beyond my comfort level on Saturday.
January 31, 2010 at 10:32 am #169979No one rode out of their comfort level that I can testify for
