AnonymousWell, I’ve only ridden it for 4Km’s up the road and will reserve further judgement until I have given a good ride off road.
I will say so far that the power seemed very docile, even for a new engine and with the yellow PV spring in. I have already swapped out to the red spring and will see how that goes. A new expansion chamber and a JD jet kit will follow shortly.
The suspension clickers will be played with and I’ll have to set ride sag and all that jazz. The Scott’s/Ohlins damper will be swapped when I can arrange it with my chief mechanic (
) and the Pivot Pegz will likely come over too.
Hopefully then she wll ride like the wind and I can admire her speed as I fly off the back in a massive show of pathetic riding ability
October 25, 2009 at 10:41 pm #158008you will learn to love that pipe guard moto, especially if you go on murphs ride…

October 26, 2009 at 12:05 am #158025The 300s all feel like that, easy to use, and reasonably “docile” in nature, but they do get along once you learn the riding technique, the power is sorta seemless in comparison to a 450 that hits in the middle or a 250Mxer that hits down low, but don’t be fooled that seemless delivery puts the power down well.
good onya Moto not a bad choice.
BTW KTM owners rub off all the time OMO…

AnonymousYeah, I’m sure with a fettle and a bit of a run in it will be good. The last one I rode was supposedly stock too with only 30Km’s and felt a good chunk quicker.
We will see
October 26, 2009 at 12:29 am #158035Nice aray of toys ya got there.
I had a 02 300 and stuffed around a bit with the jetting and springs. I found you really need a good ride to notice all the changes that the springs make, as well as the obvious immediate changes. I left the red in and went for 13/50 sprockets, good fun! 13/52 may have been better.

AnonymousWent for my first off road ride on the new 300 today and the red powervalve spring sure does make a hell of a difference. It’s night and day.
Here’s my honest opinion so far:
Good
• The red power valve spring does indeed unleash the hounds of hell, if my 450 can keep up with this when on band I’d be impressed!
• Power on band is very strong but linear.
• The versatility of the engine with the different springs and CDI settings.
• The low end torque for a 2 stroke.
• The suspension front and rear blows through the stroke much better than the 450 and seems to be fine with my weight. No clicker settings have been touched yet.
• It carves from side to side noticeably quicker than the 450.
• It feels more nimble than the 450.
• The tyres surprisingly aren’t too bad, although haven’t been really pushed yet on rocky stuff.
• The Hyde bash plate has already saved my pipe.
• It feels like a nice new bike!Bad
• Bottom end is doughy off band.
• It doesn’t ride well sat at only 90 Km/h making it horrible to ride on the road. I suspect cleaning the jetting up will help this.
• The seat is hard which will give me monkey butt in a flash and also makes the bike a bit taller.
• The torque isn’t that of a 4 stroke.
• It only has 5 gears, could do with a 6th. Great for racing, not great for trailriding.October 28, 2009 at 12:24 am #158256Moto, good to see you enjoying the new baby!
Just curious about your impression of the torque. I was under the impression that 2t’s had MORE torque than 4T’s because every stroke is a firing stroke.
From Wiki:
Quote:torque measures how hard something is rotatedTherefore, more “bangs” or firing strokes will give more torques for any given RPM. I believe that a 250 2t will crap all over a 250 4T for torque at a particular RPM, and have ridden a KTM250 2T, finding exactly that – compared to a 250 4T.
I might have it all wrong, but that’s my understanding…
Mr Blue could help us out here I feel sure…

AnonymousECKS, technically you are correct and I’ve not long ago had this discussion with TB (a week or two back). The first thing to point out is that I’m not comparing apples with apples. Its a 300 2 banger Vs a 450 4 banger. A 300 Vs 300 would be alot fairer.
That said, the 300 doesn’t have the power of the bottom end to dig in and get moving like the 450 does. It more than makes up for it a few 100 RPM later.
It was a comment that may be slightly misleading. The 300 has a lot of torque but not the level I’m used off idle when not in the ‘zone’
