That said, the 300 doesn’t have the power of the bottom end to dig in and get moving like the 450 does. It more than makes up for it a few 100 RPM later.

of course not moto, you just need to get used to riding one gear lower. if its a gnarly hill, torque up it in second or hop the front in first, wicked either way ;)
they are made to rev remember. once the jetting is right, and its run in well, give it shit. it will love it. you will love it too mate.
your riding style will change heaps to suit the engine…..

give it 12 months and you will be suprised you ever rode a 4 stroke. (thats a big call though)

you gotta get used to jamming the brakes on instead of just backing off the throttle, i rode menaces bike for about 10 mins and over shot every corner, admittedly is was still half pissed from the night before

I was doing that on my run with old man the other day

Enter light speed testing new engine……heart misses beat….spot a big log in track……back off throttle and hold on praying the damper will save me……..realise I’m not slowing down…….realise the damper is on my other bike……grab all brakes……hit log doing 0.2km/h less than previous speed from 40 metres ago….land very wobbly….almost hit old man riding my 450…..pull over to wipe poo off my boots and thighs

to be honest moto, my bike is a pig to ride on the blacktop too. it like a bucking bronco
you need to wrap your right thumb around the alloy part of the throttle to get any kind of criusu=ing out of it.

id much rather ride a 4 banger on the road too.

im gonna do the top end of mine over xmas, will be about 95 hours by then. you have convinced me to go the red spring now moto, you evil molebag :P

You don’t have to wait till Christmas when you do the top end, you could be doing red pv testing RIGHT NOW!!

    #158566

You could always change your sprocket sizes for the longer trips.

    #158567

na, not now, as much as i wanna :woohoo: :woohoo:

im going away this weekend to do some mapping at the stomping grounds and sammy will be riding with me.
its her first ride since louee and with her new confidance and determination, im looking forward to it :) (till she starts ripping me a new arse for taking her on “to gnarly” a track.

i would rather do the red spring with a fresh slug too, i might get too excited and lock it up   …..touch wood i dont!!

after this weekend will be my last ride till xmas, with moving house and getting my jetski going, im booked out….

i cant wait to move, ill have a double garage to work in :)

Dear Moto young man, in no way was I being adversarial besides the GB Snr comment, which isn’t aimed at you, but any casual observer who has predisposed opinions on a 2T limitations, and as we both know when we post anywhere prying eyes are ensuring this (much as we think it is) sometimes is not just a converstaion between a group of mates, but more like a conversation in the foyer of ASIO…. :( (damn them spies) even 4t blokes read our verbal meanderings and gnash their dullard teeth together….. :P

More or less in agreeance and offering hints for the convert, yeah I ran a red spring wound flush, very lean pilot, a NOZ needle (which I’m not sure works on the smaller carbs), advanced timing, short FMF silencer, cut head and made it as vicious as I could off idle. This does make the engine less docile but is no MXer in that regard.

The top gear issue I ran tall final gearing too, as I found 1st far too low anyway, conversely my YZs 1st is a bit tall sometimes, and the final ratio is way low, but i was thinking about it, I have ridden road almost as long as dirt and have no issues about running on the pipe on transport as i find it smoother and more “controllable to use in the fat of the power, the sound and vibes doesn’t peturb me once you’ve ridden 4T singles and 2T twins at a constant 10k rpm on the blacktop

Next hint get real agressive on that rear brake pedal, then the front will come into it’s own as well, the beauty of a light bike is the ability to perform gymnastic manouvres using the controls to assist you.

And again nice choice, pity it took you so long…did I ever suggest a smoker? specifically a 300?

Cheers Bruce, I wasn’t having a dig by the way, reading my post back I can see it could have been taken that way. It was meant light heartedly :)

I’m pretty aggressive with the brakes anyway, especially sliding the rear in and in tight ST.

Looking at the gearing it’s actually 13/50 and not 13/52 like I suggested previously. I may try a 48 tooth sprocket when I get the other mods done. A shorty pipe will be on the Christmas list too :)

Apparently Akrapovic (sp?) make a pipe for the KTM300 now as well, but the R304 shorty or the FMF shorty are tried and true power shifters, I seem to remember Mr Menace has one on his as well.

you obviously don’t need to play with your static timing as the CDI has the ubeaut inbuilt function. The triple taper needles were the go on the 38mm carb, does the ’10 run a 36mm still or have they finallty realise they sacrificed too much and gone back to the 38mm?

a Spacer in the header section has been rumoured to improve torque as well, anywhere betwix 3-7mm, not sure how difficult they are to turn up for the newer models tho’.

You’ll have to bring it up for one of Robbos “crap” border ranges rides, or even down to Napalm Springs’ death resort with a few of us, and see how she performs in the heat.

I’m keen for a shorty muffler to bef up bottom end and will likely stick to the proven performers.

The 2010 still have the 36mm carbie, although I’ve seen some people have bored them out to 39mm. I have no idea about the spacer.

A robo’s ride sounds great, it’s just organising getting up there at a suitable date.

Bike update after a grade 5 ride yesterday covering 80-90Km over several hours will follow later today.

Well after another 90Km or so on the steed my impressions, hopes and worries about the bike have been shifted.

Starting the day off with only 45Km on the clock the bike wouldn’t start on the starter. She fired first kick though and we were away. After the first few hills I was experimenting with gear selection, clutch position/fanning and how much torquing she would take before giving up. The results were impressive! It truly does tractor up when required and seems to do it almost happily. Not quite 450 like still but as mentioned before we are trading cubes as well so I was pretty pleased.

I also spent some time changing the throttle position and clutch bite point to get more comfortable. Initially I went too far with this and when testing the band nearly fell off the back a couple of times, half an hour later and i was happy again. I was still testing out the power delivery and how best to use it.
Unfortunately for me it took me half the ride and some advice from Grant? About torquing it around. This seemed like a lot less fun but might be a good idea considering how tired I was getting so early on.

In the end I found that the 50/50 method suited me best, ride it off the pipe as much as possible but just under where the hit came in, then when I needed it ‘crack’ and we were off. This sounds like hard work but I was getting into the groove ¾ through the ride and didn’t really look back.
During the brief moments I gave it some beans I didn’t struggle to keep up with anyone and think that had I not burnt all my energy so soon that I could still be relatively fresh riding like this. The next ride will tell that.

Having completed a ride I would grade at a 5 I can say that I did notice the suspension does need to be set up for me. At this stage I suspect clickers and harder rear spring will suffice like it did on my 450. I still maintain the stock suspension is better on this bike than my ‘08’.

The front Metzeler tyre seem pretty capable and I was quite surprised with it’s performance, the rear however is a different story and not is wearing at an alarming rate but doesn’t grip that great either, in it’s favour I would say it’s predictable.

The red power valve spring is definitely the way forward for me and it will be staying in. I would like a little more bottom end and for the jetting to be cleaned up. I rode Axel’s bike and found the bottom end to be much smoother because of jetting.

When I can get it sorted I will slightly wind out the power valve preload screw (it’s a stupid square drive) and get a shorty muffler. This will help bottom end without me having to ditch the Hyde bashie straight away ( I would have to do this if I changed pipes).

The starter was making some funny noises but was working so the bike is going in the shop to have that looked at this week. The needle will also be moved up a clip position to see if that helps clean up the jetting. A JD jed kit will be procured shortly regardless as tf2 amongst others seems to have been pleased with the improvement.

Overall, I’m very happy with it. And more to the point I’m happy that I’m happy with it, there was a niggling doubt in my mind that I could have just spent $13.5K on a bike I don’t like :P

Given a couple of months on it I think I’ll be going as quick if not quicker than on the 450……the bike is indeed a weapon :)
