Hey mate have you read up on the starter issues the 300 has? I think there was a good thread on another site let me know if you want it and I’ll find it for you. IIRC they’re known to crap themselves after a ride or two unless cleaned out and repacked and sealed with grease. Don’t stress though it would obviously be covered under warranty for now.
Are you taking it to KTM newcastle for warranty etc?

Wouldn’t the dealer have done that before they delivered it knowing the problem could let the owner down?
Got to say that would piss me off no matter what brand of bike it is
I have seen them do it when pre delivering bikes at Sutto’sTB
November 2, 2009 at 8:04 am #109878The 2010 is meant to have a better stronger e start Moto. Dont stress it just sounded as if the starter was engaging too long after start up. sure it will get fixed up. one thing bout the starter. I only use mine when i stall and need to get going in a hurry or when im on a weird angle and cant kick the bike easily or too tired to kick the bike.
these starters are tack on items there not like a four stroke starter. i would be kicking it as much as possible for the long jevity of the starter.
and before any one carries on about paying big money for a bike with a starter and having to kick it, it is amazing how many four strokes i have seen where there e starter dont work properly or on every occasion and they have to kick it. this has been witnessed on bike from 07 on ranging from huskies,wr450’s ktms crfs etc.
i know what i would rather be kicking.
on the jetting. if you want to try some jetting solutions before forking out $145 like me try this
the N8RH needle in your spares kit on clip #2 if you want it to go hard its the go (apparently). I think it might use a bit more fuel than the JD though. but apparently it gets 100 kay from a tank (which is good).run that N8RH with 35pj which is standard and already in there and buy a 162mj think there bout $10.
others have tried it and say it is good.
if it is a good jetting spec please keep your feelings to yourself cause i will crack if i just spent $145 to find out i could have spent $10.
cheers

AnonymousCheers for the advice guys, that jetting sounds good, I might get the KTM boys to do that when the bike goes in tomorrow.
I was never concerned about it, I’m glad it happened now. Spoke to KTM Newcastle and they said they’d look at it ASAP and do the jetting mods I wanted (I asked for the needle to be raised up 1 clip position) at the same time. Not even a mention of money or warranty.
I will ask them to stick the other needle in and see how it goes. We’ll have to have a ride of each others bike then Nathan to compare differences between the above spec and JD jet kit

My bike went into the shop yesterday and the starter problem turned out to be a faulty bendix. A bendix was taken off a bike they had in a crate out the back and KTM Newcastle will push through a warranty claim for it.
I also said the standard jetting wasn’t very good and asked them to jet as per tf2’s specs above. I had the N8RH needle and 162 main jet in the spares kit I got with the bike so all they had to do was fit it.
They even changed my oil for free
Anyway, I got home and couldn’t resist the urge to run the bike around the block quickly. First thing I noticed is that starts really quickly on the button now (almost instantly in fact). The jetting seems to have made a big improvement in smoothing the power out and the spluttery bit of thr throttle just before it used to come onto the bike seems to have totally gone. Woohoo!!
I’ll have a better idea of how effective the mods were after the Westy ride on Sunday. I’m going to wind the PV spring preload tonight (assuming a 1/4″ square socket drive) fits it which should bring the power on even lower and smooth it out more.
Bring on Sunday…..yeeeeha!!!
November 4, 2009 at 10:59 pm #159550Hey moto did you buy it off them?

AnonymousThere is a bit of a story behind it (nothing bad) but yes I did.
November 5, 2009 at 12:31 am #159555You must’ve hit submit by accident mate cos I don’t see the story in your post :p
PM me mate I’m interested. It might’ve been the scarcity of the bikes I was asking about but shane wouldn’t budge on price for me
A dealer in qld quoted me $1300 cheaper than him and it included shipping!!! Mind you shane’s price was standard, the qld price has me up at night trying to decide which way to go next!

AnonymousIt was just a bit of a misunderstanding really. I was in KTM Newcastle (as I often am) after the Louee weekend and ended up asking how much for a 200 and a 300 smoker. They told me the price including bark busters, bash plate and some money off and I went on my way.
When I got back to work I called Sutto’s and asked for confirmed pricing for the 200 and 300 following my conversation with them at Louee when I had asked how much they were. At this point I was expecting the best deal. What I got was standard RRP pricing.
Not wanting to play the dealers of against each other I left it at that and enquired about finance. By the time I had further contact with Sutto’s and it became clear that they could have done me a better deal, however, at this point I felt obliged to stay with Newcastle KTM.
That’s how it happened, no skull duggery or bad karma from Sutto’s, just a miscommunication. I have put and will continue to put money Sutto’s way though as they are very helpful.
In the case of my bike it worked out quite well as if I had a starter failure having bought the bike from Sutto’s it would have been a lot harder to get my bike back and sorted out ready for this weekend.
Sutto’s were very helpful (as always) so if you’re keen for a new bike give Daniel a call and ask him what he can do. Make sure you state you want their best, bottom line price
November 5, 2009 at 12:45 am #159564I’m going to test ride another brand shortly and that will make my mind up I hope. Once I’ve done that then I’ll talk price but unless I’m quick the 09 runout will have ran out!

AnonymousWhich brand and what model? What 09 are you looking at out of interest? Sutto’s had a runout ’09’ 200 EXC for silly money…..

Well done on the jetting fix Moto. I just looked mine up: NC3J #3, 165M. Not sure of the pilot.
The 1/4 wrench shouldn’t fit. Pretty sure it’s too big. I was going to get a SCA 1/4 drive and run it on the bench grinder. Instead I grabbed an old allen key and ground it down instead.
Whatever you do don’t be tempted to put a screwdriver in there. It can be very tight. I had to dismantle mine to free it up.
I found red with the screw flush (most people do it) was nice. I have the ignition on soft but will change it soon to try back on hard.
Remember that my top end is reasonably worn Moto so probably appeared smoother than it should be. Yours was quite angry when it got on the pipe so making that come on early with the red might wear you down. You might find the Yellow lets you ride with more “off pipe” power comfortably.November 5, 2009 at 1:52 am #159588
AnonymousThe new jetting seems to have smoothed it out Axel and added extra ‘beef’ to the bottom end. It’s a shame that 1/4 drive won’t fit I wanted to get it sorted for the weekend
It feels smooth like yours now and the pipe ‘hit’ seems to be less noticably as the bottom pulls a little stronger. I only did a short road ride but I’m very sure I’m going to like it in the bush. My CDI is also set to power, I haven’t tried traction mode yet. Might give that a go on Sunday too.
I have already been tempted to jam something in the power valve preload thingamy so I can give it a turn or so out. Looks like I’ll test the jetting this weekend only. Better to do one thing at a time anyway

AB how did they go on the price the other day when I put Sutto on the phone?
