No. I’ve got a 450 that I’m selling on behalf of a friend though

Besides, who said I’m selling it?

Just asking Moto, because I know more then most about your bike before you start talking it up to much is all

That’s pretty rough. A chain and sprocket has been destroyed and I’ve ridden it with dodgy wheel bearings what else?

I wouldn’t sell it here even it was for sale so it’s not an issue for you to mention the tortuous things I’ve done to it.

The joke is Mr Blue that I am very bad with maintenance and looking after my bike so me washing was a real surprise.

Whilst I do joke about maintenance my bike has always had the parts it’s needed and I did clean it, just not necessarily after every ride. Then again I used to ride every weekend for periods, not once every month or so like a lot of people. It’s always had decent oil and must be okay because after 7,500Km’s without a single problem and the valve clearances still in tolerance how can people complain? :)

I don’t always change air filters every ride either but there has never been a spec of dust behind my air filter.

In all that time I only failed to finish 1 ride and that was because my aftermarket exhaust would clamp on the header properly and kept falling off.

Thats true and a great run, I checked the valves and all is good, real good

You haven’t mentioned the noise in the engine that has you worried, although I don’t think its anything more then a exhaust leak maybe and how reliability was something you started to worry about, remember telling me on the weekend but again I wouldnt worry about it. Its been a blessed run I wish you many more

I worried I’m going to sieze the piston in the 300 when I really rev it and that’s still under warranty and is a brand new bike

The noise would be fixed if I sold it anyway. It’s definitely not the exhaust. I’m pretty sure it’s the cam chain tensioner or a stretched cam chain.

Yeah you did say cam chain thats right

Rev the 300 while its under warranty it will be all good

Moto in your mind you know the 300 is revving lower than the 450 at redline, but because it firs every stroke it sounds higher, I have regular laughds at modern 4T riders (the ones who have only known the screamers) who tell me mine revs too high, compared to their YZF250 etc, I seem to remember my upper power redline at 8750rpm is around 4000 rpm lower than theirs.

You won’t seize it unless your stingy on the pre-mix or running real hot and lean.

KTMs 2Ts are good that way.

more trouble with the OHC versions, just check out all the sites for confirmation.

It’s just different and it’s also (fairly) new so banging it off the rev limiter in every gear has been something I’ve avoided doing. I tried not do this on the 4t either although it happen from time to time.

The engine sounds more ‘frantic’ when being revved which is why I’m being a little cautious. That and the fact I’m so fit I can ride it for about 5 seconds with it pinned in any gear

More like 135Km/h rocket. I have 13/50 gearing on mine though, it was the only option that came with the spares kit. I may drop it down to a 48 yet, we’ll see.

g’day moto. how many kms have ya done on the new bike. i would’nt be holden it pinned in 5th gear for any great distance (ie on the road) until ya had about 1000 kms on it. like ya said it’s hard to ride it flat stick in the bush any way so revin it out through the gears there is not much of a problem. the new synthetic oils are great but they don’t have the meat that the old mineral oils had. they (mineral)probably wore the bore a bit quicker though. when ya hold it pinned it burns like a bastard in the chamber and runnin the the new oils pretty lean as we do these days can dry it out and that’s when she’ll seize. once it’s all bed in real nice ya won’t have a problem and you’ll get heaps of kms out of it before ya gotta change ya piston and rings. before my current 300 i brought new 1999 300 and did’nt change the ring and piston until about 5000kms and it looked great inside the barrel. before that i had a 1996 360 and it was the same although i did’nt rebuild it until about 8000 kms and it was good too. i remember thinkin i ripped myself off cause it did’nt really need doin. i hope it makes sense there moto as i’m no mechanic and it’s just my opinion.

I hear ya Dusty and am careful with old girl, I don’t ride it pinned on the road in 5th but have had her up to speed. I made sure I keep blipping the throttle though and don’t just shut off.

I blip the throttle even on short downhills just to be sure :P It probably has 350Km’s now, although the hours ridden would be alot higher as they have all been slower, hard rides.

Moto how are you feeling alround about the 300 after your ride on the weekend, I’d like to hear your thoughts on it’s strengths/weaknesses in comparison to the 450/4T, and if it would have been any easier to accomplish the ride on the 4T?

also when did you get the Trials bike in your Sig?

Hey Bruce, I’ve had the trials bike since new, it’s just in the UK still. I’m going to look at getting it shipped over for a project bike. I broke it at the last trial I did and only half fixed it.

I really like the 300 all up. The suspension still needs a little work but I could do with being lighter to help it out. The engine is great and is a real gem with the new jetting specs. It definitely feels nicer on the turns and has that agility which keeps you interested even on the easy stuff.

For the same given forest trail I think I would have more fun blasting the 300 around, but I still really like the 450.

Whilst the 300 is a great bike I wouldn’t discount the 450 at all. Given the lack of ride time and fitness I think I could still ride the 450 a smidge quicker. Or at least quicker with confidence. The handling of the 300 will improve when I get rid of the terrible Metzeler off the rear.

As for the race I honestly don’t know what would have been better. The 300 turns better and is obviously lighter but the 450 can be more forgiving to ride so when weighed up may cancel each out. Put it this way, I don’t think i would have done any better or worse on the 450.

The 300 will stay as my main bike and if I do longer trail rides the 450 may make the odd guest appearance. We’re still getting to know each other really and the race was only my 3rd proper ride on her. I still hate mixing oil it’s pathetic but do love the zing of the 300 :)

Would I buy the 300 knowing what I know now? Yes :)

Yep, that’s how I figured it’d be, the 300 is more “fun” and the 450 is easier. At the end of the ride it’s all about the inevitable bench racing and what turns you on to looking forward to the next ride.

    You’ve done well young man.
