See who can use it in a discussion at the Pub
:It’s normally spelt “palaver”. According to the Oxford English Dictionary it derives from the Portuguese “palavra” meaning “speech” which meant “talk, parley, discussion”, specifically between Portuguese traders and West African natives. So “what a palaver” – “what a load of [pointless] discussion”.
[shakes head]And this comes after I didn’t highlight the fact you originally typed 22cc instead of 200cc. [/shakes head]

Quote:Took Connor out to race at the HVMCC MX yesterday and who do I see belting around in the Over 200cc class and C grade?? Our very own Thirsty2454!!!!Howd you pull up Thirsty??? You seemed to be handling the rythum section OK
Mick, just so that you know starting a sentence with ‘Took’ is very poor grammar. Also, ‘Howd’ is not a word recognised by the English dictionary that you seem so attached to and if you do need to abbreviate words you could at least put an apostrophe in the accepted place.
Lastly, ‘rythum’ is also not a word and ‘OK’ should not be in capital letters given the context it was used in. Since you like the English dictionary so much I’ll let you go back to it to find the correct spelling.
You shouldn’t throw stones from a glass house
December 15, 2009 at 1:00 am #165134Whats with all this palaver????

AnonymousSince I’m sat on my high horse which is almost as high as Mick’s I would have to correct you as well and state that this thread ‘was’ about you. Now it’s about Mick and his superior, non superior spelling skills
December 15, 2009 at 1:11 am #165285How have you made this thread about you Moto  Come on couldnt you leave one thread

December 15, 2009 at 1:11 am #165283Whoa back big fellow!! I wasn’t making reference to your spelling,or that matter your grammer either. I was merely pointing out your penchant for dragging out obscure words, that more often than not, require persons like myself who are not versed so well in the Queens English, to refer to the dictionary for the exact definition of the words in question.
No need to bring out the big guns
Above is what I do believe is a perfect example of a “palaver” if my understanding is correct.

AnonymousMaybe I should have used more smilies, it wasn’t meant nastily, more of a ‘shut-up you mole bag’ kinda way
I thought you were taking the piss as I assumed palaver (even though I spelt it wrong) was a common word? I’m even more surprised that you of all people needed to look it up!
December 15, 2009 at 2:14 am #165299Palaver…………
Never heard of it.
December 15, 2009 at 2:17 am #165302Nor me Mick cant see me using it either

AnonymousWelcome to the Old Bull spelling bee.
In the Orange corner, we have all the way from mother England – Moto the English literary extraordinaire.
and in the Red corner all the way from Wauchope NSW (where ever the hell that is) we have Mick the Wauchopian Mayor.
Now boys we want a clean battle of wits and knowledge of the English language. There is to be no use of acronyms or slang and the use of a bag of garlic to beat your opponent into submission will not be tolerated and lead to instant expulsion.
Lets get ready to rumble.
and yes I do know where Wauchope is – it is a nice little country town where everyone knows your name, you can leave your house unlocked and everyone watches out for each other. And they don’t like them city folk too much
