It had to happen eventually. There comes a moment in your life when you are stuck on a greasy hill and your 12 year old son roars past you and makes it to the top on his 85!!
Moose and I loaded up our sons and our bikes for a couple of days of quality father and son time at my in-laws 620 acre property at Comboyne.
Over 8 inches of rain in 48 hrs set the scene for some very sloppy riding and some great memories that will last the rest of my life and hopefully the boys lives too.
We arrived and there was a break in the rain,so the boys got busy unloading the gear, it was so wet and greasy, that no sooner did Alex step out of the car, he was arse over head in the mud. Then Moose’s VW transporter got bogged on level ground, this was the indicator that there was going to be some great fun and roosting to be done once we got the bikes unloaded.
Here is the Comboyne base camp at the property. It is a well set up affair with two bathrooms, two separate kitchens, big TV,workshop and a view that goes forever.
Most of the weekend was spent in the clouds
The trails had not been ridden since our last visit,so they were covered in leaves and were in pristine condition.
Mooses young fella George was easily the fastest all weekend on the YZ125 and I constantly had the screaming 2 banger behind me pushing me along
L-R
Connor,George, Mick,AlexMoose and I decided to have a rest, while the boys went out and did a couple of loops by them selves, it was great to sit back and listen to the sound of the 3 bikes echoing across the valleys, knowing our boys were out there having the time of their lives.
After the first afternoons riding we retired back to base camp for a feed and some refreshments. A fire was lit, so we could dry out and have something too sit around in the evening as we were 700 meters above sea level and it cools down pretty well at night.
Connor had never seen a gun fired in real life so we got out a gun so the boys could have a shot at a 20 litre drum, the choice of weapon may have been a bit dubious for a boys first ever shot.
Ready, steady, aim……..Ka bloody BOOM!!!!! She certainly has a bit of a kick!!
After seeing the welt on Connor’s shoulder, the other boys were not all that keen for a go at the big pop gun. After five minutes of rubbing his shoulder Connor had another shot at the drum and he was keen to spend the rest of the evening blowing drums to bits but we decided the gun was to be put away as the beers were about to be served.
A great night was had sitting around the fire reliving the days riding and events. We carried on until late in the evening, maybe a little too late as I woke up a tad dusty in the morning but still managed to cook up a storm of Bacon and eggs.AS Bollocks pointed out in another thread all farmers have something of interest in their sheds and my inlaws are no different, poked away in a corner all covered in dust,I found this interesting piece of machinery. It appears to be a cross between an ag bike and an air compressor. I was keen to take it for a spin in the mud but I wasn’t all that keen to fix the flat front tyre and I am sure I wouldn’t have gotten far without a rear knobbie.
After breakfast,we kitted up and headed bush again only to find out that the deluge of rain in the wee hours of the morning had made the trails very wet and greasy. The first up hill we came to saw me loose traction on the XR and all three of the young fellas and an ol bastard on a XR600 over took me and took pleasure in filling me in with roost in the process.
The drizzle and clouds had set in pretty well and the hills got harder and harder to get up until we only had one left that we could all get up,so we gave it a good workout. At the top of the hill the fog was pretty thick.
There are a couple of great hills through the rain forest which are a real hoot too…
The rain really started to bucket down so we headed back towards to base camp but found a great little gully for a bit of a play, Connor had a big moment when a sapling took him out big time,
George coming through, real hot!!
Connor and his bike were a mess after the roost fest getting to the top of the hill
Alex wasn’t much better either
Me waiting in leech city for the boys to come through
by this time the rain had become torrential so it was time to call it quits and head back for a feed and to pack up. You cant really tell by the look on his face but Connor had a great time!!
He wasn’t the only one to have a great time, what a top couple of days out on the bikes with the boys!!!

December 30, 2009 at 10:32 pm #166644Top shots Mick and yes I can see Connor look in his eyes says it all, Fun Fun and more FUN, Sorry I could not be there this time, as I said in a Message to you before you left I wish the weather was fine enough for Mum to give us our day pass but Lachlans asthma would have brought us home by lunchtime day 1, I will be there next time.
mate you looked right at home on the air compressor, and by the looks of it it has been there for a while, I like the boom stick, if I was there you may have had to stop me and Connor fighting over it and the drum would have been real sad by the time we were done, Good stuff to spend some father and son time like that every now and again, great report Bud, I am all Jealous now, and I better keep Lachlan and Sam away from this post , they will be spewing at me and Mum for saying no to themDecember 30, 2009 at 11:12 pm #166651Top stuff Mick. Puzzled me Mick why the bike with the most torque of the lot that should have been suited to the conditions got stuck on the hills, it was the cheap shit tyre you had on that came of today.
That wore out quick didn’t it? Cheap not good  . You can stick those MX retreads and all retreads where the sun doesn’t shineBike does look good with those rims
and don’t f*#king dent them
