AnonymousOne of the things on my “bucket list” is to have a supermotard setup on a bike.I recently had a bit of a psycho moment and almost lashed out and bought a proper motard setup for the bike, even though I didn’t have the money to pay for it. I came back to reality and canned that idea.
I had a spare set of dirtbike rims and disks, and acquired some very cheap roadbike tyres in an 18″ and 21″. I was reluctant to have a go at mounting the tyre myself but in the 40 degree heat the other week, I simply left the tyres in the sun all day. Come the end of the day, they were as soft as licorice and slipped straight onto the rims no problems.
I got bored today so I turned up some sliding knobs to protect the rear axle from some delrin rod, and will do the same for the front, or possible just use some old skateboard wheels out of my junk bin.I will investigate making more sliders for the footpegs and maybe the barkbusters (not currently installed in pic). As the muffler looks susceptable to damage, I will make a slider for it as well from a large metal spring attached via a s/s cable tie or universal clamp.
I installed a full set of shitty old plastics I got for $15, so I am not worried about dropping the bike and scratching it.
At present I have pretty low gearing on it. ie 14/52 This will allow me to play around trying to learn how to do proper long wheelies. I got a new $15 45 tooth KTM alloy sprocket on ebay. The KTMs bolt hole pattern is the same, but I had the bore out the centre hole from 125mm to 130mm to suit the WR’s rear hub. I will mount this later on, possibly with a 15 tooth front. This will allow me to cruise on the highway along with those NX650’s I have read about.
Down the track, I may install a 320mm disk on the front, just for the extra ‘wank’ value
I doubt very much I will ever race, but may be tempted to do some track days out at the Easter Creek Go Kart track. I also want to play around in industrial estates on w/e practicing wheelies, stoppies and all those other irresponsible stunts you see guys going. Here are a few crappy phone cam pics, which I will replace later on, with better ones, as the bike gets finished.
The front tyre looks as if it mounted in reverse, but that’s how it definitely goes.

AnonymousStill got the custom Ducati muffler.
In the process of looking for work, I met a guy who is a sales rep for a leading Motorcycle accessory supplier. He had his YZ450F stolen and had some bits off it left. He had the YZF pipe on ebay and said that if I won it, he would also give me……an old superceeded version FMF powercore IV!(from his work) and an old scratched up unidentified system.
He was expecting the bidding to get up to around $3-400, so imagine how shocked he was when I won it at $86! A deal is a deal and he honoured his word.
I now have a wide selection of exhaust systems depending on what mood I am in, and how much noise I want to make:laugh: I am like a woman with a penchant for many pairs of shoes, except my vice is pipes.

AnonymousTalk about fate. I couldn’t believe it when he said he had the FMF pipe. Even though it is an older model, it more than makes up for the FMF pipe I ran over and crushed to smithereens.

AnonymousNice work Slug, I too would love a motard bike for the ‘hoon’ factor. If you’re going to be doing some miles and lots of wheelis a cush drive for the rear may be a worth while investment.
February 15, 2009 at 6:34 am #122569Yeh nice work Slug. You’ll have an endless amount of fun with that setup. Just wait until you back it into a corner for the first time, it’s the best feeling and takes a lot of commitment. Might see you at a track day soon then. 31st of march a group of us are thinking of going to Oran Park if you’re keen. There is nothing better than drifting past an R1 (or similar bike) into a tight corner.
Mal.

If you’re going to be doing some miles and lots of wheelis a cush drive for the rear may be a worth while investment.Moto, I looked into these a while ago but they are quite expensive. I also looked at converting a set of roadbike wheels, as they already have the cushdrive installed. For what I want and need from the bike, I will stay with the standard hub, unless of course, I happen to see a very cheap cush drive hub. There used to be a company called Pre-Pel (sp?) that mage a sort of cush drive which was basically a special sprocket which mounted to a standard hub via rubber bushed bolts. It was a cheap option, but alas they are no more.
To date the project costs:
two rims with disks, tubes and shitty old dirt tyres – $100
two new road tyres – $60
KTM 45 tooth sprocket – $15
front and rear slider knobs – free
selection of 3 mufflers (plus my standard and custom Ducati system) – $86
full set of old plastics(F & R guards, side covers, radiater shrouds) – $15Maybe the Rekluse auto clutch will act as a poor man’s slipper clutch, allowing me to ‘back it’ into corners like a pro.
Mal, I have to recover a little while from have my stomach worked on (No, not liposuction ya smart arses!) so track work will be a fair while down the track, if at all. It’s more just to have a bit of fun on, adding some flexibilty to the use of the dirtbike.
