I agree with Ollies’ logic on the GasGas 450, terrific bikes that once they worked the electrical gremlins out of the first few fuel inj systems, apparently the engines have a lazy torquey feel but still get up and bogey and the reliability of the engine internals is somewhat xr650like from most owners I have had a yarn with.

But I reckon if the KLX suits your needs, you could do much worse….

Dont the 450 gassers have a slipper clutch standard?? Both ones I have seen do.

I also have seen both of those bikes be real pains in the arse out the bush too.

Sure do Michael, that’s one of the things I really liked about the one I rode, that and a nice easy going engine.

what goes wrong with the ones you rode with?

One had several starting issues. One caused by a dodgy rectifier that took weeks to arrive once the problem was diagnosed. Back order from Spain.

Then a pressurising crankcase that kept filling the air box with oil via a breather.

That was on an 05 model.

I just recently rode with someone on an 08 and it kept boiling, but admittedly it turns out it had a pinhole in the radiator….. It was still a pain in the arse though. :) ;)

The 2010 gasser don’t have a slipper clutch I believe. Shame as I test rode the 2007 model and it was a great bike. If I was looking at a new 4 stroke it would be high on the list, as would Sherco.

The early model Shercos and Gassers had dodgey electrics. They both had the same fuel injection systems but that’s all sorted now I believe. I’ve had no issues with my fuel injection in over 10000 kms.

Personally i think a DRZ is more what he is needing as he will be doing not only trail riding but maybe a little touring and a general ride to town commuter from time to time

In some circles of Australia this is called “weighting” or handicapping, and generally Corey we don’t do it to friends, or family…. just face it apparently yer old man is quicker than you…

We all have to face it someday, usually it’s the other way around though… :P

    Get a test ride on a Berg, any Berg will do 390, 450, 570 !!! :)

Everyone should ride a Berg before making a decision to buy something. Not saying there for everyone, but it’s good to know how great it can be !!!!!

Who out there has a drz 400. What are the good points and what are the bad points.

    #183331

Bigger al, I’ve got a DRZ400, had it for the past two years.

The good points are there initial purchase price is a shit load cheaper than anything else out there, they have good usable power, easy to ride, easy to maintain and rock solid reliable.

On the bad the suspension need work for anybody over 70kg. The DRZ is also heavier than it should be but I don’t even notice the weight. In reality its not that much heavier than most 450’s.
There been plenty of times when I’ve been able to stay with the lighter bikes I single tracks.

I was at the poker run last weekend along with a few other DRZ’s and had no troubles with any of those trails. In fact my bike had road/long distance gearing on it as I was too lazy to change it and I was still doing the hills in second gear.

Speaking of road gearing when I first bought the DRZ my car got written off about a month after. I was without a car for about 6 weeks while I waited for a new. During this time the DRZ was my only form of transport and it did the road miles no problems.

Al although the DRZ is not as powerful, fast and light as the 450 enduros out there it is more than capable of riding the same trails with a competent rider and some common sense.

Good advice there Scotty if I had to choose a replacement bike for my trusty xr400 I would look at the drz for sure you can a great deal on one and they must be ok because the cops use them and they replaced the xr for the drz a wr450 would be the other option but I would buy a bigger petrol tank.
