Welcome whanny. Sounds like you got a pretty good buy, what’s the condition like and how many kms? I only paid 6k for my bike but I had to spend about 2k to get it to the condition its in now!

Best thing you can do is get the suspension setup for you,ie spring rates, sag, valving etc. If your going to be bush bashing I wouldnt worry to much about the plastics until its time to sell. Plenty of after market parts available for these bikes.

Ollie is spot on if you’re going to ride the bush chances are you’re going to drop it or throw it at some stage. WRs are pretty good all round out of the box so just make sure its running smooth and it you have the money get the suspension set up as Ollie said and spend the rest on spares and tools ;)

yeah i only just got it not long ago so i’m not going put new plastics on it cause i will probaly fall off heaps when i go riding as i’m new to it and have only been out riding in the bush once lol before this bike i had a dt200 to learn on but i saw this one for sale and seemed like a good deal and was all setup for off road as the dt is not setup for off road

Well done Whanny, sounds like a good thing.
Wanting to know everything is OK from the start, maybe change oil and filter, have the valve clearances checked and always, always, always make sure the air filter is clean. The reason valve clearances change is directly related to grit in the air!

First chance you get, pull the suspension linkages apart and check them out, they are notorious for being neglected and are exspensive to fix if you use genuine parts  although pivot works do sets for these. Use plenty of good waterproof grease especially on the swingarm pivot bolt. ;) also buy yourself some new wheel bearings,Shane on Ebay does them for $20 a set including seals.

Good luck with the WR they are a good bike B)

My WR450 has a YZF exhuast cam and vortex x10 ignition and it makes a big difference when hitting the hillclimbs.

Hey Whanny, you can run a heat gun over the plastics and it will soften the scratches and bring colour to the white crease marks, Ollie is right about the linkages they are abit of an archilles heel in the Yamahas.

Fester was the Vortex x10 worth the money? I have been thinking about them lately but at $400 (give or take) it’d wanna make a big difference between maps.

I can notice a differnce between STD mapping and aggressive power and the traction1 setting but between the rest I can’t notice any difference. Mine X10 was on the bike when I bought it cause it was set up for motard.
