Hi All,
My Husband or now ex-husband use to come to this site, I use to read it sometimes when he had it on his computer.
I hope you don’t mind me asking but I needed some advice. My husband (EX) bought me a 2004 model wr250 which we had lowered for me as I am only 5’4.. Now that he is not around I am thinking of upgrading to a more powerful bike and was wanting some advice on what would be good for me. I mainly do firetrails and the occasional motocross track with my girlfriend on the Central Coast. We have friends that have a couple hundred acres up near Wellington that we go to quite a bit. I find that I just need a little bit more power, especially when going up the big hills, my friend Simone rides her boyfriends Honda 450 and she always beats me.
I was thinking maybe a Honda or KTM but need to make sure they can be lowered to suit my height.Anyway thanks for listening.
Kathy.
October 20, 2008 at 11:15 am #109783Hi Kathy,
Welcome to the first Female OLD Bull member, I’m sure you’ll get all the advice and tips you need here.
I Know ballards sell lowering links for most bikes, so you shouldn’t have a problem getting them for most models. There’s some very knowledgeable people here so I’m sure they will be able to help.Cheers
Chris.October 20, 2008 at 11:53 am #109784Hi Kathy,welcome to the site,I will have to watch my language now:laugh:
The yamaha 250 and 450 share the same swingarm and linkages so if you are happy with the Yammy just use the lowering link that is in the 250 and grab a 450.like Chris has said Ballards sell lowering links and you can also get them on ebay although they are not cheap, over $200 from memory:blink: best of luck and hope to see you out on the trailscheers Ollie
October 20, 2008 at 2:07 pm #109788Or you can do some basic mods that will make your WR250 a lot stonger. Start reading TT http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=54475
Good luck.October 20, 2008 at 10:34 pm #109802
AnonymousHey Kathy, welcome to the site. Also congrats on being the first female member. We have a ride and BBQ this Saturday with about 25 peopel coming from the site, you’d be more than welcome to come along as it won’t be anything hard. We will be starting from the Nothern end of the Watagan’s, see the thread in the ‘Ride Gatherings’ section
If you want a 450 you can go wrong with the Yammy, KTM or Honda. Each bike has advantages and disadvantages and the best thing is try and ride each of them and see which you like best. If you come along on Saturday you’d be more than welcome to have a go on mine (08 KTM 450).
As Ollie mentioned it might pay to stick with the Yammie as you will be able to re-use the existing lower link that is likely to be installed to reduce the height of your bike
October 21, 2008 at 2:00 am #109828Thanks Guys for all the advice, and thanks for the offer MOTO, I might see if my girlfriend want;s to come along for the ride and I might just take you up on the offer of a ride. I hope your girlfriend won’t get upset though. I think I’ll stick with the 250 for another couple of months as I don’t really have the money to ugrade just yet. Unless something comes up that is too good to refuse:kiss:

AnonymousNo worries, the more the merrier…..and the more sausages I have to buy! My girlfriend is all good, as long as I don’t start having sleep overs and pillow fights with 2 strange ladies. She’s only just got over the last time that happened
What about a big bore kit for the 250? Or are you hell bent on a 450 now? TB rides an XR650R and loves it. His only gripe with it was that he wished he had the power of the pumpkin so I don’t blame you wanting a 450(wait for intersting response)
Have you thought about a 2 smoker? Like a KTM 250 or 300? The 300 is everybit as quick as the 450, but less low down torque. For a 2 smoker is has heaps of torque at the bottom end and can be tuned to your liking with the use of the interchangable power valves
Karma for joining too

Anonymousyou don’t need a 450. us bone heads just think we need anything bigger then a 250 (or 650).
i actually go faster on my partner’s ttr230.
by the way she is coming this saturday tooOctober 21, 2008 at 2:23 am #109901Thanks Guys I’m just waiting to see if my girlfriend want’s to come along, if she does I think I’ll go to. What do you mean by ‘Pumpkin’ I think a 650 would be way too big, don’t forget I’m only 5’4. The Big bore kit sounds like an idea but I don’t have a built in mechanic anymore, any volunteers??.
October 21, 2008 at 2:34 am #109903Gday Bikerchick, welcome to the forum, great to see our first member of the fairer sex!! Love your signature,I have a daughter that has the killer instinct and at the races she gives the boys what for on her little KTM.Actually there are a few girls in our club that would crap all over me in a race. But that isn’t saying anything really.. Champo’s right, fastest times I put down in the single line @ louee years ago was on a TTR250 that I set up for a mate, I own a 650 because of some of the rides I like doing require a big bike and it pulls monster wheelies and thats important!
Welcome to the site, 1st woman although the way Moto carries on we are going to have him checked ! lol Did Pete sell his bike?

AnonymousPumpkin is generally referred to as a KTM
TB is probably only 5’1 and he rides the 650, although I wouldn’t recommend it.
Champo is right a 250 should be fine for all but the most discerning racer. I could ride quicker through the bush on a smaller bike, but I like to spin the shit out of my rear wheel and hang it sideways round corners just beacuse I can. It’s not all about how fast you go in the bush, it’s how much fun you have too, and for that I love my 450.
Besides, people might think I have a little winky if I rode around on a 200EXC :p :p
Now the new Husaberg FE450, that’s a bike to contend with. Champo will cry like a little girl when he’s sees the sexyness of those blue rims, being a TM boy he’ll know what that’s about
I’d help you with the mechanic stuff but I don’t know my arse from my elbow. My brand new Titanium ‘Wings’ exhaust fell off the first ride after I had fitted it!
