Hi to all @ OBT,
Bloody stoked to have scored a spot on the June Lithgow ride and this will be a great follow up for me from recently returning from “Captain T” Clubby’s Tenere Tragic Long Haul Run up to Longreach. One thing is for sure is the Lithgow ride will be dramatically cooler….!!!!
I have several machines in my shed 09′ XT660Z Tenere, 10′ FE390 Berg, 83′ XT600ZL Tenere, 08′ Grizzly 700, and there is always room for a couple more and working on an 84′ IT200 at the moment.
I have been riding like most from early years on the farm, B grade motocross, trail riding, top half of Oz trip. Always been a dirt bike rider, never ventured to the tarmac. I lived on Cape York for close to 10 years and had many riding adventures up there during that time including several Croc Runs.
Anyway, I look forward the the ride next month and meeting up with the OTB crew.
Regards
Chris Kirk
aka – FactoryMay 16, 2013 at 11:49 am #241951Ahh the famous Chris with that Tenere, the red framed, upside down shod Tenere. Welcome mate, yes you scored the last spot! If you haven’t a ride partner we will probably throw you in with Clubby and Wolfman on their Teneres.
There will be at least 7 Teneres on this ride :woohoo:

May 16, 2013 at 12:00 pm #241955Thanks TB, famous might be an over statement….. more like average joe. The cosmetic (ZL Replica) rebuild of my Tenere has certainly generated some interest. Amazing what a colour change can do.

Have you done a write up anywhere on what you did (and how much it cost :woohoo: ) to that flash bike of yours?
I’d love to read about it.

May 25, 2013 at 1:42 am #242462Hi JTB,
This concept for this rebuild (85% cosmetic 15% Mechanical) was born from discussions with Clubby and Wolfie Adv Moto on last years Tenere Tragics ride. 2013 being the 30th anniversary of the might XT600 Tenere ZL/34L was the basis for the colour change. The rebuild took approx 7 to 8 weeks to complete with around 4 weeks of research and component sourcing prior to the strip down date. Cost was around the $4400 mark which I will detail below. The bike had 16k on the odm prior to the rebuild and now has 21k on it after returning from the TT ride last month.
– Powder coating of frame and other ancillary items (Mudgee Powder Coaters) $460
– Custom white paint job (tank, head light surround, grey plastic covers and swing arm) (Hawkins Smash Repairs Mudgee) $1450
– Rebuilt wheels (new F and R Takasago rims 18′ rear, all new bearings and seals, cush drive bearing mod, powder coated hubs, and HD spokes, Talon billet rim locks) ( Ash Spoke Wheels Brisbane) $1500
– Head stem bearings (SKF) $60
– Custom ZL seat cover ( Seat Guzzler Brisbane) $250
– Custom “ZL Replica” seat graphics (Ring Master) $80
– XT660Z decal kit (EBay Italy) $100
– Genuine “Monocross” decals (EBay U.S.) $15
– Other custom graphics (Image signs Mudgee) $150
– General expenses lubricants, loctite, freight, bolts ect $350This was a good rebuild to do as I addressed alot of general maintenance items, head stem bearings, wheel bearings, rear suspension bearings and it is also a great way to know how you bike goes together both mechanically and electrically. Every bolt in the bikes frame was lubed or loctited, every component was checked for wear and so on. The main thing with a rebuild like this is to stay focused and committed to the end product. Without a vision of what you want it sometimes can be difficult to stay on the right path. For me it was and enjoyable transformation, and the best part is most people who have had a look over think it is pretty cool.
The next rebuild is an original 83 model XT600 Tenere, but that one is planned to take a few years to do, maybe ready for the 2015 TT ride. Short term I’m also looking at a “Vinduro” class bike (maybe IT200) and also building up a race spec 450 Rallye Bike. I have attached a couple of before and after imges of my 09 XT660Z. Cheers.

No worries,,
He is a nice bloke,, I bought a Garmin 60CSX from him prior to that trip and we paired him up with Jeffro for the weekend.
He is also a good bloke `cause he rides a 690R like me (he actually owned two of them back then for a bit) :laugh:Cheers
June 2, 2013 at 3:23 pm #242469Thanks Factory!
Too much coin for this black duck… but far cairn awesome looking bike!
I’m happy to have one bike after being bikeless for over three years and you’ve got a shed full! Hopefully I’ll get a closer look at the replica at one of the future Nav rides (can’t make Lithgow). And I look forward to reading all about your other builds!
