The route I take is going to depend totally on the bike I get , what are your first impressions of your Tenere for this type of trip?

Ummm mate I am not sure yet, it I think will go wherever I want it to go, it has gone real well everywhere I have taken it thus far. Sand on any bike can be a drama but I feel it will be ok.

I would also pick a bike for the route not the other way as then you may have to compromise on things you want to see and do to suit the bike :(

Another thing for me was that all this style of adventure riding comes with a ride to the start and back and hrs and hrs in the saddle either on the way there or back or the ride itself, so its a compromise of comfort, cruisability, high speed running, handling, off road ability, ground clearance, power, fuel economy, reliability, availability of accessories and spares.

It took me 12 months of researching etc to decide and that even covered the ability to customise things and suppliers able to do the suspension and all the other bits and pieces I wanted done.

Where and when are you going across Australia I could be interested if you dont want to do parts on your own

    TB

Well TB I have been planning this trip for the dry season 2012 , a long way off I know but I am being very thorough as it’s probably a one off. The missus has no problem with the length of the ride so I would like 6 weeks at least. I drove through NT in 1992 as a pommie backpacker and saw roads off the stuart highway that the 72 kingswood couldn’t even consider but it has stuck in my mind as unfinished business so 20 years later bring on the mid-life crisis tour!! :woohoo:

I plan to travel north to qld then head west to Perth. As you would know their are lots of route options my only essential points being the sandover hwy, the old gunnbarrel hwy and Connie sue hwy to reach Laverton. Any local knowledge of good riding along the way is obviously welcome! ;)

The remander or the journey from Perth is open to interpritation and the success to that point, I would love to venture North to the Kimberleys and across the top but this is unresearched so far.
I have had a few mates keen but when I show them the itinerey I think it scares them off, obviously I would like company for this type of trip but have no problem going solo and planning a ride like this including others that are likely to pull out would be pointless. I am basically planning a solo adventure but anyone who is keen and capable is very welcome!
So if any of this takes your fancy TB let me know !

I might see yous on the road. my neighbouur and me are taking his 63 valiant to the 2012 valiant car show thingy …in perth
