Hi all, a Newbie from Maitland NSW. Just lurking in the shadows and waiting for the right opportunity to pounce! You’ll recognise me as the unco-ordinated, short ass rider on an 08 KLR650 who may not stop to say hello cause I can’t reach the ground and I’ll fall over. (Note to self: laying the bike over at the first meeting appears to be a great icebreaker providing new friends with hours of future amusement).

Just bought the bike in immaculate condition which lasted for precisely one week. Now have a brake-caliper-shaped dent in the exhaust, new handlebars, clutch lever, bark busters, mirrors, and if the sun glare is in just the right position you can hardly see the gravel rash raking the fairing on both sides. Mmmm… road tyres huh!?

In keeping with the KLR Poverty Pack you may also recognise the ALDI jacket, Thoroughbred Immitation Dakar Helmet, and I’ve just upgraded from Genuine Leather Riggers Gloves to something I’m pretty sure actually came from a bike shop! Yay me!

If anyone is keen for some company and free amusement then just let me know and I’d love to tag along. If it all becomes too embarrassing then it won’t take much to shake me in the bush. Just pull up and make out like I should do the same and then you can take off again while I’m still trying to pick my friggin bike up.

    See you out there, Junior

    Welcome aboard Junior.
I agree with Murph, your intro is a good read. You have contributed more in one post than some of the dribblers on here do in a year
    Enjoy the site.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Very fetching suggestion there MrSquiggle but if I’m wearing those no one would want me to stop anyway! I’ll just have to stretch until I get things sorted.

    Hey Hey,,,
Welcome to the Nuthouse Junior ;)
I see you have already met some of the main culprits ???

Howdy Junior welcome to the site .
By the sound of the dent in the muffler you have lowered your bike ???
If that is the case you should get your self a good bash plate because the standard
one is only plastic and you will bust the sump plug out of cases . I have seen this
happen first hand , the dent in the muffler brought back the memory. Cost of repares
    were $2,000 .

    Catch you on the trails
    Great intro by the way

G’day Junior , welcome to the asylum .

That advice on the bash plate is serious , I’ve seen the sump plug ripped out of a KLR on the trail and the bike became a write off as a consequence  , It was a brand spanker too . It was not lowered either , just used a little beyond it’s designers intention , ie , leaping off erosion mounds ( was only 2 ft off the ground max :) )

Keep the antics up though and we’ll all get a giggle eventually I’m sure .

Linz you’ll look great in those boots , I’m sure you’ll get the offer of a bed on Saturday night if you wear those , ;) no tent then  .

Yes Bones it did have a lowering link installed and was one of the reasons I purchased the bike. But after seeing and feeling how badly it was bottoming out I have since put the original links back in… which is why I can’t touch the ground!

I don’t really find the height too much of a problem with the trails I have ridden to date but I suspect that in the tighter stuff I may struggle. At the moment it’s a case of fake it till I make it and I only dropped it when I ran out of go forward on a gravelly hill. Bike still has road tyres on it as I’m doing a road trip with some friends early Dec. New tyres after that.

In regards to the bash plate, my plate and motech guards arrived yesterday and again, I plan to fit them up after the Dec run. Hopefully this will allow the sump plug to remain a part of the bike for a little longer.

Also considering progressive 465 shocks but will need to research a little more and maybe give the Technic team a call. Not sure whether a one inch lower shock will take me back to the bottoming out problems or if I will just stick to standard length. Time will tell. Thanks again for the welcome and the warning.
