February 12, 2012 at 10:37 pm #216032Had a good ride today on the Tenere. I was running a bit late due to work stuff but left home around 1.30 and got to St Albans at 3.15, had a beer with TB ten we geared up for the trip back. My Tenere has basically road tyres on so TB sent me out front but it wasn’t long before he pulled up beside me then pulled me over to swap bikes. It was a good chance to ride the old and new back to back and compare the 2.
The first thing I noticed was the stiffer suspension and a little more power, not handfuls more, it just had more tourque in the lower revs. I think I have posted before that mine, which rolled over to 80,000 km on the way out, seems to lack that ability to pick up the revs when they get a bit low and in fact when it’s in top gear wont rev past about 5000RPM and tops out at 140kmh on the test track
. The biggest difference though was the way it turned through the corners, the front end felt very stable where as mine is a bit skatey but as I said, they are basically road tyres on it. I thought it may have been just me not having confidence in the front but TB had the same issue. I see now why NickJ copied TB’s bike, it’s a very capable adventure bike, comfortable and handle well.
Once we got to the great North Road we headed on the tar to Laguna and then headed up into Watagan Creek road and into the mountains. When we got to the start of the climb up the hill TB pointed me in front again beacause of the tyres I had but I was again surprised at how well they hooked up and I only had one small moment getting to the top. We stopped at the Pines for a wee break then headed down into Cooranbong and up Hawkmount road (dirt again) which got a pretty rough once it turned into a power line trail but again I was happy with the way the old Tenere handled everything. Into Freemans and right at the roundabout heading towards the freeway when TB pulled over and pointed to another trail that was a bit wet asking if I wanted to give it a go which we did. It was a short mildly rutted climb to the top with some slippery stuff along the way but I got up without any problem. Once at the top I gave it a handfull of throttle to clear the tread only to find the ground was more slippery than it looked. We headed down about 500 meters and decided that it wasn’t a good idea with my tyre so turned around and managed to get back to the top and down the other side with a minimum of fuss.
We then headed towards Wakefield then headed up Archery Rd then taking one of the trail of it and headed into Killingworth where we said our goodbyes and headed our seperate ways. All in all I am still very impressed with the way the Tenere aquits itself in all types of terrain. So which did I prefer to ride between the old and the new,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the new, but only just, that little extra power combined with the grip of knobby tyres was really nice on the loose gravel surface but it wont take much to get the old girl up to spedd. Definately the most capable of the 3 Adventure bikes I have had, the other 2 being a Transalp and the Veestrom.

It is so tight for a bike of its age and mileage, a real beauty.
Thanks for making the effort to catch up, you did an amazing job on those road tyres. I kept putting you in front waiting for you to bin it, but it looked as safe as th bank of England
