I am in the planning phase of my next little homemade exhaust mod. It will be a series of aluminium “quiet” inserts for my modified Ducati muffler, installed on the wr450f, as seen in a previous post.
It’s not that I think the new setup is overly loud for the bush, but more a case of experimenting to see if reducing the outlet size of the tailpipe, has any effect on the low down power and torque. It will have a secondary effect of reducing the sound level as well. I actually like having a big loud exhaust as it compensates for my miniscule dangly, wobbly bit.
The current size of the Ducati tailpipe is 48mm ID. I plan to make inserts of 35mm ID, which is what the White Brothers muffler for my bike is . The others I plan to make at 32mmID, which is the YZ450 tailpipe size.
There are two designs I want to use. One is a straightforward sleeve with a tapered leading edge.

The second design will be a central hole with satellite holes drilled around the circumference. This one will be alot of fun to make, particularly the calculations required to figure out the equivalent area of a large single hole, using 12 smaller holes and medium size central hole.Plus marking it all up and calculating taper angles.

I am just waiting to get some alloy bar, as I tried with steel hollow bar, but it was just too hard for me and my lathe to work with.
