I just got home from a three hour ride at Nickj’s. He has built a home on a beautiful piece of land which backs directly onto some great riding. For those lucky enough to have ridden at KTM Bull’s it has the same sort of access. Straight out behind the macadamia plantation he has put in and you are into it. :woohoo:

It was Nickj, I and two mates from Yamba, Mark and Nigel. You can expect to see them on here soon. The Coffs Coast/ Clarence Valley chapter is growing: laugh: He has some young singletrack on his property that runs you out to some really fun and flowing twin track. The trail surface is sandy in spots and with the perfect amount of overnight rain the conditions could not have been better.

Nickj knows the place like the back of his hand and as I was the only one not to have ridden there before the pace straight out the gate was solid. I sat on Nigel’s back wheel and followed his lines as we climbed up towards our first ridge line of the morning. He was moving along pretty quick when all of a sudden he got deflected of a root, into a puddle and from nowhere a wild dog ran across the track. The dog was smart enough to keep running but Nigel had less options and landed sideways and got high sided hard. It seems I am witnessing a few of these lately, hey Kram B) except this time I had the helmet camera running :P

It was only about 8.15 so the sun was low so the visibility was not ideal but you get the idea
Fortunately Nigel is a tough bugger and got up, dusted himself off and kept going. It did slow him down for a bit so he jumped in at sweep and took it easy for a while. The sand section were riding fast thanks to the rain but there were some really greasy section that were like trying to sail a boat make out of soap over a sea made of glass. It was f@#$ing slippery. In one such spot Nickj and Mark were riding in a straight line, not on the gas and both of their bikes slid out from under them in the exact same spot. From where I was you would have thought it was a greasy log but no, nothing, simply that slick. I came into a left hander and got on the gas a little early and held a long slow drift that was getting way past the recovery point as I slid straight off the trail and into the bush. I was still back out speedway stlye when I noticed a log in the grass and knew I had to eject before I got high sided. I dropped the bike and got up to the laughs of the boys. They reckon I was sideways that long they had placed bets on whether I would get it back or not. They all bet against me. :(

The moisture in the ground was keeping the sand together and what would normally be fairly loose trails were now a lot faster. :woohoo: A lot of sections were old disused fire trial which had grown back into wide singles. It meant you could move outside the rider in front of you to get good visibility and then tuck back in as it tightened up.
This footage gives you a feel for the sandy twin.

We covered a lot of ground on this terrain and the four of us were staying tight. By now Nige was starting to get his Mojo back and he was on the gas. I was super keen to ride with Mark as we are longtime friends and have done a lot of cool stuff together but we have never ridden dirt bikes together. He works for Westpac rescue choppers and only recently moved back from Cairns. He was meant to ride at my backyard bash last week but he stripped a bolt on a oil change the night before. We more than made up for it today and I look forward to plenty more Nth Coast goodness with him. Expect an intro on OBT soon. He is a top bloke.
On a rest break we heard some other riders coming up behind us and had a chat with a couple of Ballina boys. This stretch of bush is massive and in one way or another pretty well runs from Coffs to the Border Ranges. If you combined the trail knowledge of the local riders you could put together an epic through here.

My baby sitting window expired at midday so we kept the breaks short. i had gotten up at 5.30am to make it happen and even though it was only 10am it felt much later. Nickj checked his watch, consulted the boys on what we had time for, and we were off again.

Your name came up more than once today mate. You and the Kwaka would have cut loose. Once you are on the mend we are talking about a two day ride between me place and Nickj’s.

Good report STM , nothing left to say except it was really good having you up here and I think Nige is happy we all had an off before the day was out , that is by far the wettest I have ridden those trails and in spots it was impossible to brake or acclerate , just grab the seat with your arse and hope !!!
I liked the idea of a 2 day mid- north coast ride with swags and lager , that’s right up my trail!!!

Wish I was able to ride :( Hopefully the 2 day ride will go ahead when I’m well mended coz I want some of that action.

Maybe you’ve got special stack powers or something STM  Next time we ride together I’m staying behind.

Between the sandy twin track and the greasy sections there was some sweet, sweet loam. These sections of trail were similar in that they were overgrown fire trail with one main line but super grippy.
The footage below should give you a good feel for it
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwXNo6sixp8

Dust was nonexistent but the occasional bog hole kept things interesting. You would round a corner hot on the heels of the rider in front of you only to see a massive puddle that was about to leap from the ground and engulf you. We all wore our share but the trails were so much fun that you did not care how wet you got, plus it is the North Coast of NSW so it was steamy and a bit of cool water is never a problem. We stopped to open one last gate and Nickj and Nigel decided we had time to add one extra section that they had not planned to do. It was a long downhill with a gentle slope that just allowed you to add some throttle to maintain momentum but did not require any real drive. By now we were all in the flow and the next 20 minutes just disappeared beneath my tyres as I floated over some amazing trails. The surface, conditions and crew were all perfect and made for a very fitting end to a very special morning.
Cheers Nickj for a great ride and congrats on your property. It is incredible and a credit to you.

    Ride on!

Hey all, this is my first post. Thanks to NickyJ,Nige and STM for a great ride.Always love riding with those blokes.
Was good to finally get a weekend off and ride with the boys.Unfortunatly in my field of work(EMQ Helicopter Rescue) i don’t get many weekends off.
I missed out on riding Coffs the previous weekend with STM due to a cracked oil screen bolt but redeemed myself on this ride and had a blast.
I am keen as ever to get out on the Kato asap again and get out on those Coffs trails.I rode Coffs with STM on mountain bikes years ago but due to STM loosing hair and having a gammy knee, motos are on the agenda haha.
Very keen to meet riders in Northern NSW and Southern QLD who can show us their local trails as i live at Kingscliff but work in Brisbane(EMQ) and Lismore(Westpac Lifesaver).
    Cheers
