Doing the top end on the 530, pulled the piston out of the barrel and saw the not so pretty sight of vertical scratches on the cylinder sleeve :( they’re only light scratches the surface is still smooth but have been told its now stuffed..should of done the top end sooner but anyway..
Ive been recommended to send it to electosil in melb for re-coating,anyone used them?? Or does anyone recommend anywhere else??
    Cheers

Hey Burnsy. I looked into this for my ktm 250. I contacted Millennium Technologies (Eric Gorr) in the US. They were very easy to deal with and helpful. I also contacted Electrosil, also great to talk to. To ship to the US and have it done (cylinder/piston kit etc) was cheaper and according to a very experienced 2 stroke builder, he would choose the US option (didn’t say anything bad about Electrosil – he just sends all his stuff o/s). Only problem is, it’s not supporting Aussie business. But I have no actual purchase/work quality feedback for you regarding Electrosil (have read good things online). I was also told Aurum Plating do the repair/re-plating as well. I actually found that purchasing a ktm hard parts 300 kit was not a whole lot more so I went with that option. Not sure if they have a similar thing for your 530. Best of luck and keep us up to date with the rebuild. Cheers

Had a few things done with electrosil never been any issues , just one tip though if you can send the piston with it to as then the do the electrosil coating to the match the piston you are putting in then your tolerances will be perfect

Cheers, i got a quote off electosil today $540 with a 2 day turnaround..also got a quote off f1moto $450 with a 4week turnaround as they send overseas, will contact millennium and aurum tomorrow..yeah hb I have the new piston to send off with it,kinda wish I hadn’t already purchased the piston as I can get the oem piston and cylinder off ktm for $800, anyways I’m saving money doing it myself so that’s one thing I guess.

Hey Burnsy how many KM/HR you got on your 530? Mines got 8500km/270hr and all stock but using a little oil. Was thinking its time to do the same.

It don’t blow smoke & its not leaking. The gear box is fine.

Don’t mean to hijack the topic.

Yeah Boze you’d prob want to give it a bit of a freshen up. Mines got 9700ks/270hrs pretty sure it’s the first rebuild..I’d say your piston would be stuffed, check your timing chain to,mine was stretched to the shithouse..
was getting a bit low on compression and with all the rain we’ve been having thought would be a good time to tear it down :) Glad I did

I’m sending the cylinder to powerseal in the states,$320aus inc postage,,that’s not bad??

Yep ok similar conditions, I’d better look in to it sooner than I was going to. I use the manual tensioner.

    Cheers Boze

Luke Charlesworth what did you end up buying in the end? Have you had any issues with assembly or running?
A mate here has found a defect in his cylinder coating and is looking into options.

G’day Axel. Sorry for the late reply. I ended up buying the KTM SXS 300 Kit (part number sxs12300100) from Country KTM in Tamworth. Best part about the kit is all new cylinder, cylinder head, power valve components, updated ignition and piston kit. The only additional items you need are spark plug and small end bearing. The assembly of the power valve was a 3 beer job. It wasn’t difficult but I just wanted to set the Z dimension correctly. Jeff Slavens has a good youtube clip on this. Then it is just a matter of popping the new piston on (I had a little trouble with the piston locking rings/circlips which can be a pain). I then slid the 3rd thickest base gasket on. Slid the cylinder on making sure the piston rings were correctly located. Checked the X dimension and all was good. Popped the head on, Spark, Ignition and put some coolant in. Kicked it through a few times with ignition off. Ignition on and it started 3rd or 4th kick. Awesome. I found the whole deal to be quite easy by taking my time. This was my first attempt at anything other than changing the oil on a DRZ. The bike ran ok during the first idle/heat cycle. Then I did a few small/easy runs but there was a lot of smoke/spooge and I fouled a plug. The bike had been jetted for a 250 with standard chamber/pipe, but now has 300 and FMF gnarly and Shorty pipe. Sent it to Bikes and Bits Tamworth and they changed the jetting. Took the bike out last weekend and it rips. Nice and crisp, pulls hard all they way and no spooge. Very happy with it. Cheers

Thanks for posting that up. The part number is gold. The problem is there are no kits in the country. KTM can’t indicate if there will be any on the way either. May be discontinued. Mate here will choose replating I think. It’s already a 300, just wanted a factory solution.

Yep. Bit of bad luck. The nikasil looks like a bubble the size of 5c piece below the where the rings reach to.

Axel your mate could try the Kangaroo Kit from Slavens racing. They are in stock per his website. He takes the KTM 300 kit and does some head work on it to help with running Australian fuel (Designed it with Robby Maddisons Dad I think). This is what I was going to do but he was out of stock at the time. US$899.

Saw that last week and he sent them an email – no reply.
Mates worried about it being suitable for 2007 300 EXC. There are differences, some known, some unknown between 07 – 11 models. As an example, 07 head orings and ring grooves are different just between 07 and my 08. The Kangaroo kit lists for 08-15. The exhaust flange is apparently different however I’m borrowing his 07 pipe on my 08 so not sure there.
I’d say without it stating it fit’s 07 he won’t risk it.
The 07 model is basically 06 SX and older design bike.
