Met Mick at 7 am this morning, his pig refused to get out of bed that early so he fired up the tenere.
At bago bluff he informed us he was only going about half pace due to the tyres and size of the adventure bike. There was mention too of having a prophylactic for for a front tube.
If that’s half pace compared to the pig….. :S
Somewhere between bago bluff and comboyne rock I misjudged a tree on the track at a bend with some shadows, a battle between the tree and my front wheel insued, needless to say the tree won.
K8ii and I bit the dust hard. Dickie estimated the speed at about 50, I found out fire trail pulls you up real quick aye, when you’re sliding along on your side braking with your helmet.
Pulled the remains of the headlight shroud off and put it in he backpack, checked over the rest of k8ii all seemed ok I put in the 4L of fuel I was carrying in the backpack ( 75km on just over 4L I thought was really good, seeing I’ve not had a great deal of this type of riding while working out fuel range etc.) so we made our way to comboyne rock lookout, mick pointed out where the fire was that was filling the valley with smoke and trying to see us some $1000/acre properties
Plus showed us a hidden cave! We decided that it would be getting too hot to do too much more by the time we would be getting closer to sea level plus now with no headlight on my bike he thought it best not to be near too many main roads where mr plod may be set up for the day., he took us via some more fire trails with some singles, however about 10km from his place I noticed a woosh woosh sound from my bike when I was off the throttle, but all seemed ok just this sound, we black topped it for a km or so, it was here I noticed that the rear was a little Squamish. I now realised that the rear was flat, oh well only 3km of track home when Dickie pulled up along side me to see where the burnt tyre smell was coming from, he noticed that the right side bead had popped out off the rim, the tube was still all good at this stage.
Mick was laughing as he had never seen anything like it before!
We decided to limp her to mick’s and load her onto Dickie’s ute.
Was going ok as long I didn’t feed her a fist full of throttle, on the last black top hill the tube let go, and we were crabbing up the road, mick n Dickie road on, dickie returned a few minutes later.
On the way to mick’s we stopped at iga to get some drinks, the check out chic asked how I was and what I’d been up to, I raised my arm and said I’d been dirt riding, she gasped a little, ans said that’s bad, and informed me she wants to be a paramedic. She asked if I wanted a patch for it I said I’ll be ok, she insisted I need a patch and a bandage, calling over another employee to get the first aid and tells me she also wants to be a paramedic.
I swabbed the area with an alcohol swab, then the patch and bandage was applied.
Got back to mick’s, he’s said I was a bit slow, as I didn’t get either of the girls numbers. :pinch:
Silly me!
Pics to come.
November 23, 2014 at 8:24 pm #260376It was a bit bloody hot for a ride but we were silly enough to head out any way. An early start saw most of the ride done before the heat of the day. For some reason I still haven’t bothered to explore, my XR wouldnt start after 8 kicks so I gave up on it and grabbed the Tenere.
A bit of a run up over Bago ensued, I was surprised how well the Teneres climb hills even with the standard tyres still fitted. We mainly did fire trails until we got out towards Comboyne, then I tried the Ten out on some easier singles and over grown trails, for a reasonably big bike they go pretty good in the tighter stuff except the mirrors kept catching on stuff.
Anyhow after a bit of a climb up toe Elkhorn Rock road we were heading to Comboyne Rock when I stopped at a corner and realised XY and Dickie were no longer following, I headed back a couple of kms and found XY holding the front end of the Kato and claret pouring out of a couple of wounds that really needed stitching, the big fella is pretty tough and declared he was happy to carry on. A zipp tie and a bit of bush mechanic work saw the Kato fire up, a elbow guard applied to to XY’s wounds saw most of the blood being mopped up.
WE headed up to Comboyne Rock to give XY a look over Bago and the Comboyne Plateau before we headed off back towards Wauchope. We popped out onto the main road near Bago Winery and a short slab run over the windy bits saw me lead the lads back into Greggs road for some more bush before we got back to Wauchope. Again at a corner I realised the boys weren’t there again so I back tracked and found them with from the left side of XYs bike what appeared to be a flat tyre, no drama I though, I have a spare tube. It wasnt until I saw the right side of the tyre that I realised that my spare tube wasn’t really going to help the situation. It appears that the bead wires had broken and the bead came off the rim.
It was only about 5 kms to town on the tar so it was decided to limp the bike back to my place as amazingingly enough the tube was still pumped up!
What ensued next was some of the funniest riding I have ever witnessed with the big Kato crabbing up the road at 50kms an hour with XY trying to sit up on the tank to get the weight off the back wheel. The last hill we had to get up was the end of it all as the tube finally decided to give up the ghost and explode in a spectacular manner! The tyre started flapping about like a porn star’s tockley before the Kato came to an unceremonial stop, 1 km from my place. Dickie grabbed his ute and rescued XY and the Kato before a feed of chip sandwiches plus a bit of bench racing finished off a good ride.November 24, 2014 at 1:08 am #260377Good to hear the ride didn’t go as planned but all ended with out too much blood being spilled . Good read too fellas
