Quote:Hey Mick, did the Hatteras have a networked computer system which could tell you where to pull in for fuel or did it have to be calculated manually?Fully automated system, although we didn’t need to worry as it held 2000 liters of fuel, so we just pulled in of an evening and topped up the tanks.
Fuel stops at:
Wrightsville Beach NC
Georgetown SC
Hilton Head SC
Daytona Beach. We had a few issues on the trip, the auto pilot shat itself just as we crested a wave and it did a instant 90 degree turn and broached like a bastard,we shat ourselves just for a second or two.Interesting enough, that happened in the Bermuda triangle of all places
The Captain of the USS Ronald Reagan got a bit shirty when we tried to get a closer look at it and he demanded we change coarse immediantly, and the sheriff at Charlston SC radioed us and asked in his best Boss Hogg accent “are you good ol boys in the south bound Hatteras looking for 30 days in jail??” Apparently they are a bit touchy about how much wake you cause in the intercoastal waterway.
I had to replace a starter motor at Daytona as for some reason one engaged while we were motoring and burnt itself out.
All in all though what a trip!!September 18, 2009 at 11:46 pm #153518Ha, Ha Mick, nice one – couple of events actually.
Good to hear you did a good job of commissioning it. I bet the owner was glad it happened to you and not them.
Perhaps you didn’t tell?Speaking of off shore events, I was delivering a Sydney 38 from Southport QLD to Sydney once, owner was on board and they were sipping champain and eating caviar in the sun, doing about 5-7Kts under spinnaker off Surfers, perfect postcard stuff, I am half asleep on the foredeck.
Anyway I heard someone say something about steering (no autopilot installed) and the spinnaker collapses and we’re going round in circles!
WTF? Panic stations – pull down the kite, dump the main yeah yeah “WTF happened boss?”“No rudder control”
So we started the motor and setup the tiller and continued with two people required to steer.
Then he is gone, nowhere to be seen, WTF? Search the ship!He was in the big space the 38s have around the rudder shaft trying to fix the 3mm spectre that had snapped.
Clearly this happened before and they forgot to fix the jerry rig.We ended up using an old halyard line to fix it, which probably lasted years and we made it back to Neslon Bay before the weather stopped us there.
September 19, 2009 at 1:11 am #153528My brother is the registered owner but a Japanese guy is the actual owner(long story). After the Miami boat show it was shipped to Japan, where it still is.If you have a spare 2 Ozzie million we will deliver it to your address if you like.

That job is about to end anytime in the next 4 – 6 weeks but :blink:Eagle if I were you, with future employment uncertain, I would definately look into joining the delivery run.
I would be surprised if the owner did not fly you home but you may not need the trip home straight away.
As they say “you never know whats over the horizon”.
Just be prepared, dress well, be open minded and professional.Nah thanx!!!
I passed up that option a long while back actually,,,,
I have been involved with the boat over the past 3 years & full time onboard for the past 23 months.
To sail I would have to do some courses at my expense, and most likely pay my own way home from the destination, and crew rates for inexperienced dudes isn`t that great.
Would be an awsome experience to do the trip that`s for sure, but 3 months is a long time away from the family :blink:As TB says, I would most likely want to get off half way, cause I don`t finish anything
and from Panama is a long swim man
September 19, 2009 at 4:52 am #1535312 years ago it was $2US/nautical mile for experienced crew/helm I think but yeah, you earn a bad rap for yourself if you bail halfway.

I could not cope with a half hour drive/ride to get to my new boat :S
OH the bank probably wont lend me $2M anyway.

I understand the fingers get sore after a while pressing the winch buttons for trimming, would this boat need the crew to trim the sails or has that been automated with modern tech?September 19, 2009 at 9:10 pm #153463She needs crew to trim with foot switches and or push button at the Helms etc
Still well setup though
