Another top weekend of riding and drinking fizzy drinks!

Friday arvo started with a shed party at my place, The boys started to rock up at about 5pm and young Sam took on the Penny Farthing challenge.

He started out good but finished bad. I think Adam has video of Sam’s unorthodox dismount from the “deadly treadly”. Not offen you can crash a penny farthing and come off running. LOL After Sam’s go all the other guys declined the offer of having a go.

We thought it a good idea to put it back in the shed and retire for some drinks and an awesome damper dip my missus made for us.

DSC02468.jpg

A few beverages and steak sandwiches made for a good night of shed racing and piss taking.

Saturday saw us at the track and kitting up at 7am and on the track by 8. Although the venue was changed 4 days before the event, the tracks were a credit to Protty and his crew of helpers. We broke up into two groups, one group sweeping the seniors and the other on the junior track.

The only problem with attending an event of this caliber is that you realize how slow you actually are on a bike compared to the pro riders. Young Matt Phillips riding a YZ475F was doubling these two piles of dirt that had to be at least 6 meters apart and jumping at least 20 feet in the air in doing so. Several other pro riders tried the same and they were casing out and getting thrown over the bars. Any lesser rider would lay on the ground busted after a big come off like that but these guys pick up their bike and tear off like nothing happened.

Matt Phillips is the next big name on the Aussie enduro scene and he lead all weekend eventually beating Chris Hollis by 4 seconds and Jarrod Bewley by 55 seconds on Saturday.

There was a man made water trap on one of the loops and it was giving a few people trouble, Phillips made it look easy.

How Phillips did it

How everyone else did it.

Connor took a heap of photos on Saturday and when I find the camera I will up load his photos.

More report to follow.

At this point I just want to thank Mick and his family for their hospitality Friday evening, and a very big thankyou to Moose and his family for accommodating and feeding us all Friday and Saturday night. :)

You all are a credit to your community ;)

More to come when I can get my head around it all

So much to tell I don’t know where to start

After Saturday’s racing we went onto the track and changed the bunting around ready for Sunday’s racing, it was great to see how many people jumped in and gave a hand as it took no time at all and we had changed the track in no time.

Saturday night we hit Moose’s place for a shed party and a verandah BBQ. What a great night! Talk about laugh, the company was great, Gittoes was in fine form and he had us all in stitches. I was buggered and snuck off about 9.30 as I didn’t want to be as “dusty” Sunday as I was Saturday morning.

They boys mustn’t have played up too bad Saturday night as they were all back at the track bright eyed on Sunday morning and ready to roll by 7.30. Moose and I headed out into the bush to make one final change to some bunting prior to the first sighting lap and once we got back to the control the boys were there doing their bit keeping everything under control.

I rode my XR650 most of the weekend and due to a few bike failures, Connor’s new YZ became the renta thrasher and Toes and Kram took turns giving it a hard time. At one stage I was at the water hazard refilling it with a high pressure hose when Kram came along on the YZ and he decked it right in front of me. If you were standing there with a high pressure hose and one of your mates crashes one of your bikes right in front of you, what would you do???
Yep, me too, I gave it to him!!

As it turned out nearly every one that swept the senior’s loop got nailed with that hose at some stage.

Here are a few photos I took on Sunday.

I wonder who this is in a Polka dotted Troy Lee Jersey?? Nahhh it couldn’t be, not on a Kato.

I have found the other camera, apparently Connor only got a few shots off before the battery went flat

What’s going on here Rebore??

Looks like you are going nowhere fast!

Lucky there were a few sweep riders about. Other wise you might still be there.

This little MAN MADE gully caught a lot of people out. Even some of the pro riders got a surprise.

When you say pro riders Mick you know that in Australia we have only about 10 full pro enduro racers (pro meaning only income that’s all they do) the rest are support racers that work during the week etc. They maybe sponsored but aren’t pro.

Great report and pictures, would have loved to be there. If they are on again next year will there for sure. Good to see the XR going around all day Mick, those dudes yelling out must have been funny  Well done to Moose and Mick and everyone that made it happen

Yes Rebore when they invent a camera that makes hills as steep as they are people not there will understand. Good on Sam for giving the penny a crack that’s balls mate a long way to fall.

Is Matt Phillips a local boy Mick? Was it a big bore kitted YZ a Ballard team bike?

More photos please ;)

Nah Mate I think Matt Phillips is from Tassie. Yeah the YZ475 was a Ballard bike and he rode the wheels off it!!. I saw Hollis get a rude shock in the bottom of that gully, any lesser rider would have had big problems. He made it through the section were Kram and Moose are pictured pushing someone out. If you tried to hit it at speed it would try and throw you over the hangers, then you had to try and keep your momentum in order to get up that steep pinch on the other side.
Yeah the XR was getting cheered on by the spectators. ” Go the big girl” was what they were yelling out.
There were a few young buggers in the bush watching the race and as you went past they would let ripp with an air horn that would frighten the shit out of you.

The video of Sam and the penny-farthing.

Friday evening at Mick’s had its fun, and a top entree’ from She who must be obeyed ;) It was devoured in a matter of moments

Moose’s hospitality was also exceptional with his boss trying to keep us in line and administer first aide to her daughters guest  She sure had her hands full :P

I would like to bag Rebore for having to rescue him however that would be the pot calling the kettle black as most of the sweeping we did was of each other

On the previous snotty hill I danced to the top with the kato after alot of wheelspin in the boggy section  luckily to land the bike with only a bent number plate  Then throughout the day on occasion we both had an intimate relationship with the hill until near the end when Rebore decided the best way to approach the hill was Ertzberg style

As I waited near the bottom Rebore decided to try a different rut as there were many to choose from. I’m not sure what actually happened however what I saw was Rebore’s front end rear up near the top of the hill  then him slip off the rear of the bike onto his feet, then the big kato launch into the air  it went way high, did a flip and landed upside down at the top of the hill  spectacular stuff   we picked up the bike, dusted it off and carried on with me hoping everyone saw it

It was a great weekend’s riding even though it was the backup venue, it was a credit to Protty and his team ;)

Although I’m nowhere near any of the competitors ability its great to ride the tracks the experts ride and to push faster and faster, well as fast as the heart muscle will allow anyway  I learn alot from these sweep days and have a great time with a bunch of great blokes doing it. B)

Whilst on activist patrol and in an attempt to catch them in the act 👿 I managed to get this video of some of the seniors ;)

It beggars belief that someone would try to cause an accident to a competitor by throwing things onto a track, in any form of race or sport  People don’t have the right to protest against an event or sport with those sorts of tactics 👿 There are children in these events, and if there attitude to other people is that low then the only place for them is prison

Luckiliy no one was injured, but it really was luck

Thanks for the Great time we had at this event to every one involved. Had a fun time riding on the juniors track on the Saturday and the same track on the Sunday with the Pro’s and experts. Phillips has a big future he is definatley one crazy Mofo. I met up with a heap of my old mates from Dungog MCC with Trent Lean takng out thee Masters section both days on his RMX450. It was good catching up with the OB who attended and helped out, even Kev and Moose helped with the scoring etc. Big thanks to Moose and Kath for letting us stay at his place and putting on the top BBQ also thanks Giddo for the Gasgas cap B)> Adam has a bit of work ahead of him getting to know how a KTM gearbox goes together and I think Kram is going to invest in a rear Mousse Tube as well . Sam and Luke certainly showed some good speed on the tight single trails and I dont think it will be long before Sam starts doing a few races B)
All in all a great effort from everyone who attended and especialy Protty and the Hastings Motorcycle club. I hope Dungog can put on a great event in October at salisbury .

As usual it was another spectacular outing with OBTs sweep team.:cheer:
I arrived at Micks on friday for the shed gathering, i was not only treated to some excellent food supplied by Mick’s wife i also saw Sam attempt the penny farthing challenge.
Although he ended with a stack just to get on the bloody thing in the first place took some stones.:S

Saturdays sweep started as usual with us ready to go and pretty much left to our own devices to sort out what we were doing.
Our experience with Mt seaview saw us sort it out pretty quickly with the group splitting into two so that we could cover the pros / seniors and the juniors / womens.;)

Sweeping on the Saturday consisted of Sam doing the actual sweeping and Adam and i repairing bunting all day.
It seems that there is some issue with pro / experienced riders staying between the bunting.
You don’t do as much bunting repair in the womens and juniors tracks.

At one point while repairing some bunting we were stuck out on the track when the pros went through.

We just stood on the side of the track with our jaws open watching these guys make the rocky rutted track that we were struggling with seems like a flat fire trail.

I have to thank Moose and Cathy for their hospitality not only did they have to put up with us but there were some kid type sleep overs as well.
Saturday night on the verandah with a few drinks a barby and some tall stories was all good.:)
Not to mention the additional food supplied by Cathy and Gassits wife.
Although after Saturday’s efforts and the prospect of an early Sunday the festivities ended fairly early.

Sunday the tracks were changed over and i did one sweep of the pros that went up into the hills.
It was an awseome track and had some logs and rocks strategically placed making it technical in places.
I spent the rest of Sunday sweeping the juniors which is where i had the Ertzberg flip.

It was a man made mound that had been muddy at the start of the weekend and formed some pretty big ruts at the base.
As the weekend progressed each rut developed it’s own characteristics.
I had been using the same ruts each loop but on this one occasion i opted for a change.
The rut i had chosen had worn down to an up ramp with a vertical rock face embedded.
When i hit it the bike went straight up in the air with me coming off the back, i would like to say at this point that i decided to let the bike launch in an Ertzberg style dismount based on some feat of control but it was more a case of survival.:S
I didn’t want to end up with the bike on top of me so i twisted the throttle and gave it a big push.
The bike shot into the air and did a flip coming down on the bars and seat, it then collapsed on it’s side.:pinch:
Luckily it was lying on top of the mound so all i had to do was climb up, pick her up and straighten the twisted lever mounts and bark busters and ride off.
Amazingly only Adam saw it because he was behind me, I would have thought a 450 Kato flying through the air upside down would have drawn some atttention.

Athough sweeping is pretty full on with early starts, bunting repairs, activist watch, dragging bikes out of the mud and picking riders up it’s a real experience.:)
You get to ride some excellent tracks, see some of Australias best riders in action and do it all with a great group of OBT members.
Oh! did i mention the laughs that’s a big part of it.

If you haven’t been to a Mick or Moose shed party i would highly reccomend it!

Official Yamaha Press release for Saturday’s racing.

Riders on Yamaha machines roosted away with the Outright, Championship E1, E2 and E3 Class wins today at round seven of the Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) held at Hastings Valley (NSW).

Local boy Chris Hollis (from Port Macquarie) was the victor in E2 aboard his YZ450F, while his Ballard’s Yamaha Off-Road teammate, Matt Phillips, took E3 and the Outright on his big-bore YZ475.

The team’s main E1 rider, Stefan Merriman, was again victorious in his class with the help of his YZ250F.

“It was a tough day, the track was tight bush, handlebar-banging action,” Phillips said.

“The tight, technical stuff is something I’ve always struggled with. I was out to prove a point out there today, that I can ride in it, as there were a few people saying that I wouldn’t do well in the tight stuff.

“I hit a few trees, didn’t break my foot, but I hurt it, and I smashed my shoulder. But apart from that it was a pretty clean day.

“The conditions were slippery to start off with, but it got really tacky – ideal conditions for racing.

“We did nine sprint laps today and they were expecting to get the same number in tomorrow.

“Tomorrow, I plan to go out early and try and put on an early lead on the field… try and take some more championship points.

“I think I can catch [Chris Hollis] in the championship – that’s the plan. It would be pretty cool if I could – I’ve clawed my way up from seventh midway through after that DNF at Hedley.”

The win is the third consecutive round victory for Phillips, who was sitting fourth in the championship (Outright) and second in class before earning any points from today.

Hollis, who was leading the championship (Outright) into today’s round seven, finished second Outright to Phillips today (championship points from the weekend’s rounds will be collated and loaded to the MA website early next week).

Other Yamaha riders who landed in the top-10 Outright in today’s round were Ben Burrell, who came second in the E1 Class and sixth Outright, and Daniel Milner, who was third in E2 and seventh Outright.

In the Women’s Championship Class, Brisbane rider Jemma Wilson who took her third consecutive win ahead of Sweden’s Emelie Karlsson and reigning champion, Jessica Gardiner (from NSW).

Official Yamaha Press release for Sunday’s racing.

Yamaha riders lead all three premier championship classes and hold the first, second and third Outright positions in the championship point’s battle with just one weekend of Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) racing to go.

Tasmanian young gun and YZ475 pilot, Matt Phillips, took his fourth consecutive Outright round win today at round eight of the Yamaha AORC, held near Port Macquarie (NSW).

The victory scored the 18-year-old enough points to move into second on the Outright leader board (13-points behind Ballard’s Yamaha teammate, Chris Hollis).

Hollis, 27, from Wauchope, finished second to Phillips (and first in Championship E2) in yesterday’s round seven and today’s round eight.

Stefan Merriman, from Nelson Bay (NSW), sits third in the championship and first in Championship E1.

“I’m stoked to see everyone on the team doing so well,” Phillips said. “It would be awesome if we won the top three… it would be ideal from a manufacturer’s point of view.

“Today, I had a few issues. The track was really tough and [Chris Hollis] was right on my hammer.

“It was just a matter of trying to limit mistakes and trying to deal with the pressure, which was a challenge.

“We did eight rounds today. I won six and Chris won the other two.”

Phillips said that Toby Price would be making a come back for the last two rounds: “if I can put myself in the top spot, and Toby slots in between [Chris and I], I can win the championship,” he said.

“So the plan is to go and win at the last rounds at Salisbury. That’s all I can do.”

The Ballard’s Yamaha trio aren’t the only boys in blue in the Outright top-10.

Victorian Daniel Milner (of the Christensen’s Yamaha Off-Road Team) is eighth Outright and fifth in E2 (after scoring a third in class in Saturday’s round).

And Queenslander Kirk Hutton (who has won five national titles and 10 Queensland enduro crowns) is 10th on his YZ250F.

Yamaha is also dominating the Championship Women’s category, with the top three podium places being held by ladies on blue machines.

Championship points for the class hadn’t been collated at the time of release, but coming into this weekend’s rounds, Jemma Wilson (YZ250F) was in front of Emelie Karlsson (YZ250F) by seven points and Jessica Gardiner (WR250F) by 16.

In Saturday’s round, Wilson took the win (Karlsson second, Gardiner third) and in today’s round, Gardiner was the victor (Wilson second, Karlsson third).

The finale of the 2011 Yamaha AORC will be held at Salisbury (NSW) on October 2nd and 3rd. For more info go to http://www.ma.org.au/index.php?id=1417

I would just like to add what a great weekend I had joining OB members sweeping at the weekend.

A big thankyou to Mick, Moose and their famlies for the great food and hospitality.
I pull up very sore today as I think watching the pros you try a bit harder than normal.

I didnt realise I was such a greeny. I was on many occasions hugging trees or snuggling up on the dirt but was all fun and made you determined to go faster next lap and take a better line.

Company was great,Beer was cold, food was excellent and the riding was awesome all the ingredients for a great weekend.
