Yeah he didn’t want to give a price which is understandable but his attitude was reassuring. Shame I just wasted $90 on getting the helicoil put in – I’ll be reusing the $30/L motul oil I just put in it too! End of the day I want it right so I’ll do what it takes so that I know I can rely on it.
August 4, 2009 at 7:18 am #146709Good luck with it Austblue, hope they can fix it without splitting the cases.

That was my thought also but I don’t like the idea of having an oversize bolt unless I can still get a magnetic insert for it.

You can make your own magnetic plug pretty easy, just drill out the bolt, press fit the rare earth magnet(get from specialist magnet suppliers) and voila!

August 5, 2009 at 2:36 am #146934I pulled the motor last night without a worry – took me 2hours this time and because I like to set myself little challenges I decided to put my head lamp somewhere safe on the weekend and couldn’t find it so I was working under a 40 w globe and a shitty torch that keeps draining its batteries within a couple of hours use.
Thanks for the well wishes guys I’ll post back when I have an update.
p.s Thanks for the tip Ollie I’ll have a word with Greg but I’m sure he’s capable of fixing that up for me.
August 5, 2009 at 1:17 pm #146902Austblue, are you saying that you paid a professional (KTM shop?) to insert a helicoil and they did it incorrectly? If so, take the bloody thing back. I would be insisting they fix it. There is an implied warranty on their work y’know.

I had new spokes fitted by JDK wreckers at Toormina, my local bike shop the one I get all my bike stuff from and when I picked up the bike the rims were out not balanced and was told there price didn’t include balancing. I disputed the charge on my credit card bill only to be told I took them into to get the spokes replaced and never said I needed them balanced. Westpak refused to dispute the amount on my credit card saying the spokes were replaced. Maybe Austblue took his bike and asked to get a (helicoil fitted) when should have asked to get the leak fixed. We don’t know.
August 5, 2009 at 11:37 pm #147142All that aside, they couldnt fix it in the first place if it was me I wouldnt want them near it again

August 6, 2009 at 12:32 am #147143i believe in my mechanicals being 100% right, and hate anything half-“dodgy”, this is mostly why I do my own work where i can as inverably I am let down by the standards others let themselves slip to, the dealership you took it to to be repaired should have picked the misalignment up instantly, or at least whence they started putting the helicoil insert in.
I don’t care if a vehicle looks tatty as long as the mechanicals are top-notch that’s what matters, pity more bike shop/repairers didn’t have the same pride. When you find one that does stick with them, they’re worth their own weight in KTM hardparts.

August 6, 2009 at 1:10 am #147148I bought my bike 2nd hand and it had already had a helicoil installed by a store in Liverpool. They also did the rebuild and receipts show there was only 200kms put on the freshy when I bought it yet the bore was out of round and the cam chain was out of sync. When I learnt of these last two issues I rang them and questioned them about it and they said too bad stick it up your arse and I’d already made the decision not to give to them again anyway. I’ve since learnt that shop has an established reputation for doing very poor work and not standing by it. If anyone wants to know the name of the shop I’m happy to PM or tell you next ride but I’d rather not post it and cause any trouble to the old bull site.
When I stripped the bolt I was surprised because I hadn’t put much tension on it. When the KTM blokes took a look they found and reported to me that there had been a dodgy helicoil installation on an angle and that’s why it stripped and thrashed the bolt. The installed a new helicoil to see if it’d seal and I found that it did with no pressure or temp but once the crank case built pressure it weeped oil. I trust the local blokes that did the work but I’m a tad confused why it didn’t leak before. Only reason I can come up with is that the shitty bolt had wore to become an angled thread and sealed.
I also prefer to do my own work so I know if something isn’t 100% and when I saw the angle I was hesitant but figured that it’d sealed well before so should be fine otherwise I would’ve had it down to Greg straight away. Unfortunately I’m not set up to tap my own thread and I certainly feel that I’m in better hands with Greg than my own doing this type of work so I’m leaving it with him.
August 6, 2009 at 1:14 am #147150Just to be clear in case people don’t read that whole post above – the local blokes didn’t cause the issue, it was already there and they did their best to fix it for me.
I might post this in the 1st post to ensure its clear I don’t want mud sticking to the good guys.
August 6, 2009 at 1:49 am #147151I’ll take a punt and guess the dodgy shop…
PM sent.

August 6, 2009 at 5:10 am #147159Bugger Austblue, that’s exactly what I was getting at about some dealerships out there are not worth the time of day, we had one like that up here (honda) but recently all the chickens came home to roost and they went broke.
