I run the same oil as Chicken, the difference is I change my oil as so as it starts to change colour, as soon it changes from the tan colour I change it. When we went to the cape I had to change after one real hard work, high reving 380km day, yet I did 1300km easy running before it discoloured.
The 4 day I did the whole event without an oil change, that was about 680 odd klms and it was ok, but ready for a change after the eventChanging your oil is the the cheapest maintenance you can do, I use Motul 5100 ester 10/40

August 28, 2008 at 9:51 am #107603I would be up for sampling Mick, you would also have to make sure people take their samples the same way, as chicken, crash and myself all worked at Cat we have had it drumed into us that oil samples are to be drawn up the tibe stick hole and not from draining oil from the sump plug because crap can fall from around the plug and other things that not allow for accurate results.

Thats just my thoughts.Chicken Ol buddy I hear you load and clear, but one would assume that most trailriders, would have the CDF (common Dog F#%K)to know when the filter is clean!I mean to say do you clean your Airfilter or do you throw it away and replace it with one of those pre oiled jobs? Same Same if you ask me. just my thoughts Yamaha also have a bronze re-usable oil filter to replace the standard(re-cheap)oil filter

Maybe the Navy should buy a drum of this Shell Rotella for evaluation on their big boats
nigel,
some used to be,the landing craft had 2 stroke Detroits but they are all based up north.Damn The majority of ships/boats use oil that is classed as OMD113 oil mineral detergent not sure what the rest is (mac?)might be alright in the TD hilux but I wouldnt put it in the thumper:laugh:August 28, 2008 at 10:13 am #107612That air cleaner comment opens a whole new can of worms, when at Finke we (Chicken, Factory Phil and myself)were told that GHR has race 450 engines with over 100hrs on them with Honda valves in them because they dont clean their air cleaners they just fit new pre oiled because you cant get the dust out, enough will save that for anther day

August 28, 2008 at 10:18 am #107540Whoa, didn’t I just open a can of worms!!!
August 28, 2008 at 10:27 am #107541BTW does anyone have an opinion on the original question? Which was opinions on oil for a tractor (XR600).
Like Rotella or whatever.August 28, 2008 at 10:27 am #107614Ollie wrote:

MadMacs
P.s doesnt worry me if no one wants to, but the offers there.
August 28, 2008 at 10:35 am #107542Might have to make the BRP a test bike .
August 28, 2008 at 10:35 am #107617That Motul has been in that thing of Chickens since JC played fullback for Jerusalem, in both 10/40 and 10/50 weights and its a semi synthetic I think and I think we all change our oil enough that most oils will do the job without being top shelf, its not as though we race the baja 1000 mile event pinned and are straining the hell out of our engines, its a good thing we do is what I am saying, but yeah you know.

August 28, 2008 at 10:41 am #107619I would like to test my oil under my conditions, but as a engine mechanic (thanks chicken) and engine trainer I wouldnt like to run different oils in my engine as I think thats bad for them.
Different make ups in oils do different things and I have seen engines that have been using no oil had a different oil added next change and soon used enough oil to be rebuilt next oil change.Just my thoughts.

AnonymousI use Castrol GPS which is a semi synthetic oil. As the oil is changed every 300km or so, i have never notice any discolouration. It pretty much comes out the same light, honey colour as when I pour it in.
Sometimes it comes out all sparkly, with little shiny twinkly bits in it. It looks very pretty. I think that might be caused by the magic fairy that must live inside my engine and the sparkles are just her fairy dust. Maybe I could be wrong with this diagnosis though.
The Castrol GPS is pretty cheap compared to full synthetic oils. It is hard to justify spending the extra cost on oil that is only in the engine for a brief duration and doesn’t get a chance to break down, which to my understanding, is the advantage of using a synthetic oil.
Nigel
p.s. I actually use a can of worms as my air filter. Their slimy coating traps any dust from entering the engine. The abovementioned can of worms lasts for ages, unless of course somebody opens it up.
August 28, 2008 at 10:43 am #107618Mick one thing you will find if you use a diesel engine oil, is that because of the high detergent additive it will really clean out all of the internals of the engine,I also know that it is ok for your gearbox as well

August 30, 2008 at 7:34 pm #107544I will definately have to review what oil to use as the Full synthetic failed me yesterday.
We were trying to get the bikes through a “mini Erzburg” and I could smell that the XR was getting really hot and as I was waiting for the boys ahead of me to get up the gnarly section of the hill I had the bike in first gear with the clutch in and all of a sudden the clutch grabbed and stalled the bike.
From there I had no clutch and about an inch of free play in my lever.
Once the bike was allowed to cool down the clutch returned to normal and I managed to ride the hard section Kamakazi fashion ,without having to stop or use the clutch, which was a good thing.
I haven’t dumped the oil yet but I will bet it is burnt, God only knows what the clutch plates look like. -
