Mick my Xr does the same thing when it gets hot ever since We, TB & I put after market clutch plates in, I questioned the Honda mechanic about this at Finke and his diaganosis is when the clutch plates gets really hot the disc material expands considerably and gives you x amount of freeplay and no clutch, I now set my free play in my lever to an absolute minimum, and try to stay off the clutch in tight stuff (very hard).
August 30, 2008 at 9:08 pm #107545Thanks Chicken, That’s good to know, it is the first time it has happened to mine and because I could smell burning oil I put it down to the oil breakdown due to the heat.
Yeah I pictured in my head that the plates may have expanded as there is no other reason that you could gain that much free play instantly like it did. Although what worried me was, that I have in the past had the bike in situations like yesterday and the clutch has never done that before.
It wouldn’t have been a good place to have to push the big girl out of if she hadn’t have come good.August 30, 2008 at 10:08 pm #107666Hey Mick How is your Clutch? I got my heavy duty after market clutch from America from
midwestmoto it was heaps cheaper there I paid $230 aus including postage for the full kit plates springs everything came in a kit they wanted neally $400 here at Proriders. Thats for steel plates and all. But it is orange so everthings dear:laugh:Dont know if link works below

August 30, 2008 at 10:18 pm #107546Mac Once it cooled dow It seemed to work fine. I will dump the oil today and put some fresh stuff in and see how she goes.
August 30, 2008 at 10:27 pm #107547Motul 5100 every 500 kms and filters every 1000 kms, 31,000km(no road all dirt) out of a 2000 520, with bore and stroke kitted up to 576, bottom end still fine , valves failed and after a top end rebuild I think another 5000 wont be out of the question……Motul …only way to go…..but as I said first up Mick, no oil will fix the drama of riding the red for you
August 30, 2008 at 10:47 pm #107669The only other thing is possibly notches in the clutch basket it self????????????maybe a combination of the two
August 30, 2008 at 10:51 pm #107548It has only just clicked up 7000km, so I would be amazed if the plates have notched the basket yet.
Then again anything is possible.August 30, 2008 at 11:01 pm #107671The baskets are alloy mick, wouldnt take long but you would think that it is ok. Chickens has done 4 times that + more and we didnt file them but should have looking back. From all the years I have owned and ridden 600’s I have had it happen a couple of times of the years, I have heard the oil bubbling in the crankcase on my old XR250 and the clutch went east, got going on some more open stuff and stayed of the clutch and it came good, just change the oil and remember its a trail bike not a Trails bike think about where it happened, your report says it all!
August 30, 2008 at 11:14 pm #107549OH yeah it was being abused!! Guilty as charged.

AnonymousI assume that the oil and clutch plates heat up, due to the clutch being slipped in tight stuff etc, to avoid stalling. Now I am just chucking this out there for thought, but would it be worthwhile considering changing your gearing for trailriding. It’s pointless having the bike geared to do a 160kmh+ top speed, and expect it to perform well in the tight trails.
I have an Excel spreadsheet that will calculate the affect of gearing changes on your speeds in all gears. You need to input the gear ratio’s for your specific bike.
By changing the values of the sprocket sizes (and even rear tyre size if you wish) it can give you an idea of how your max speed in gear is changed. If any of you are interested PM me your email and I can send it to you.

August 30, 2008 at 11:26 pm #107551My XR is geared for 100km flat out. 15/48. She is still a hand full in tight hilly stuff though.

August 31, 2008 at 6:42 am #107667G,day mick i,am thinking that the clutch plates have stuck together anyway thats my verdict on the situation thats why you had the free play in the lever please correct me if i,am wrong as a litle bit of knolege is never enough maybe we just have to poke her up some more of those sphinkter clenching hills so she gets used to it
