Well, I dunno if we actually came forth…
I picked up Rocket at 5:30 – well would have if my phone had woken me up! I was there a bit late but we rolled into the Goanna Tracks establishment at about 7:50 ready to sign up. It took me a while, had to sort out a one day licence, but we were soon ready for the riders briefing and the sighting lap.
We met Bollocks and Boony, Pep and cycletune(?). Complete with OBT banner, right next to the dunnys where the whole world could see it! Someone has to have a talk to these lads about product placement I think!
Rocket and I pretty much cruised around together, not trying to set the world on fire. I think we both rounded up Bollocks (G’day mate!) but this was just the sighting lap. I was a bit tired so I had a quick lay down and checked out the dirt briefly. But the bike didn’t stop running and I kept both hands on the bars so it didn’t count as a fall!
Rocket was the first rider in our team and got off to a great start. By the time he came in for the end of his first lap I was a bit keyed up. Had the bike sitting there idling, Rocket came closer, I blipped the throttle to go and … *cough* the bastard died!
Conditions on the track were really nice, it is sandy loam soil and they had had quite a bit of rain lately. It was really about as good as it will ever be here. Apparently if there had been no rain the event was in danger of being cancelled due to dust.
The track was 25km long and it took about 45 minutes to run it, or a little less maybe. It was mostly open single, but there were bloody little double jumps all through it! Damn, they sucked! In places, where there were no jumps, I was able to get a good flow happening and made ground on other riders. But I lost ground on the stupid jumps, they were just a pain in the butt. There were a couple of huge bogholes and I think everyone was caught at some point. I found on on my first lap and had to drag the bike out. I was lucky, others were more stuck and lost a lot more time. Still a trap though!
In places the track resembled the tracks in Beni state forest near Dubbo, winding through trees and creeks, quite sandy. Other sections were open grass tracks with growing bogholes that were bypassed as the race went on.
Rocket and I did three laps each before they closed the course. It was a lot of fun and I would do it again. Next time I will have a newer front tyre though, it is now shot. And I think I need to get my front forks looked at. Hmmm
Anyway, we headed off about 3:30 and were in Dubbo about 5:30 with an arrival here in Wello at 6:15. And now I am going to find some voltarin!
Boony took heaps and heaps of photos so I will leave it to him, mine are few and crappy!
Cheers!

Crash
September 6, 2009 at 9:06 pm #151258it was a fun race but as ecks said there was little doubles and berms through the tight scrub they were okay if you doubled them but a bit tyrering loved the berms .there was heaps of sand and it chopped up and got some good lines going with a perfect moister content also a neet grass track section .the start was heaps fun all starting together was better than one every 30seconds i reckon.bit of a trafick jam in the tight scrub stalled it on a corner and lost 4places and the boys were up me to get of the track earlyer but old mate in front with a very wide bike was slowing me down just the same as them think some of them take it a bit sereus .it was a top ride thank goodness for the rain also got stuck in a rut thank god for electric start she was deep and a fallover
September 6, 2009 at 9:11 pm #151264Nice one guys, wish I could have made it. looking forward to the Photos.
September 6, 2009 at 11:19 pm #151265Arrived at goanna tracks a tad late, but we got there none the less.
Found the old bulls camp and yep it was near the crappers, but hey a camps a camp.
Hellos out of the way bollocks tells me he just drove the last 10ks with a flat on his lux, something to add to the iron man contest for the day when we change it after the race.
I was introduced to 2 more old bulls in the form of ecks-man and white rocket, typical old bulls good blokes. (Haven’t met a bad one yet.).
White rocket and ecks-man were in the team’s event
Iron man event had Bollocks, Steve, Pep
The riders left for their sighting lap, and I was left sooking around the pit area taking photos,(told you how much I hate roos).
The riders returned about 40 minutes later and there were smiles all-round, a few test crashes were tried just to perfect the inevitable but zero injuries.
Riders were called to the start and the Old bulls attack coona 2009 was on,
The start was great to watch, the riders had to stand in front of their bikes with the motors off, the starter waved a flag and then all hell broke loose.
Of the old bulls Pep got the best start an absolute pearler and blew the rest out of the water, the perfect holeshot.go Oldbulls.Ecks and I just stood there and watch these blokes tear into the distance Ecks was keen, I was crying.
45-50 minutes later pep the first of the old bulls rode into staging, he was followed soon after by Steve and then Rocket then bollocks. Ecks was off on his first pony express, that smile will take forever to wipe off ecks.
The guys were having a ball. The was only a few minor repairs to be done to some of the bikes, Pep lost a seat bolt, Ecks lost a disk guard bolt and bollocks lost a bark buster and apparently was hit by some guy and that jammed his only remaining bark buster against his throttle, all bikes were easily fixed and back out they went. The report I was getting from our riders was that the mud holes were getting deeper and so were the ruts, a couple of our riders actually got stuck in the mud a few times and needed help extracting their steeds so they could continue.
I am unsure of the final results due to we all had to get on the road and they were not on the web site before my repot went to print, I will keep chasing this info and keep you all posted.
Highlights of the daySpending Fathers day at the bikes with the family.
