I bought a new back tyre about 3 weeks ago from the localbike shop, Metzler MC5. 3 rides later it is totally rooted  Half the nobbies missing etc. anyway I noticed the manufacture date stamped on the tyre wall as being 2008!! This obviously means this tyre was 5 yrs old when I bought it.Does anyone who works in a bike shop know if there is a time frame in which a tyre can be sold as a mate of mine said its illegal to sell a tyre that is 5yrs past its manufacture date…..
CheersNovember 5, 2013 at 5:10 pm #251421No laws in Australia as to the maximum age a tyre can be sold.
3 rides? I like to rip all the knobs off on the first ride.November 5, 2013 at 7:13 pm #251424I thought this might have been a story about faulty condoms and unplanned pregnancy.
Those MC5s are shit anyway Burnsy.
November 5, 2013 at 7:16 pm #251426Is that on the 525 mate? I agree with LC they are shifty try a Michy m12 perhaps
November 5, 2013 at 7:20 pm #251425Tyre should be better after five years cured properly, unless it was to hard and that cause the knobs to break off. Never been a fan of MC5s thought they were crap that didn’t grip and wore to fast

November 6, 2013 at 4:38 am #251422Guess I’ll just put it down to being a shit tyre..the guy at the shop said they were good
The tyre wasn’t hard, or white or cracked, I actually thought it felt to soft….. :huh:Yeah was on the 530 Nato, Ill give the m12 a try,or mabey back to the Carlsbad
CheersNovember 6, 2013 at 5:18 am #251437It shouldnt have snapped of the knobs after 3 rides, I meant they are shit in general not shit because they break knobbies, in my experience once they wear slightly they offer no grip. (the fronts I dont mind)
Pirelli MX ExtraX if you want good wear, Pirelli MX Mid Soft if you want good grip, easy to change too.

CheersKeen for a squirt over xmas mate?
November 6, 2013 at 8:04 am #251443Only personal preference from experience with the KTM 530 I wouldn’t use a M12 I would use a Dunlop MX51 on the rear. They wear well and offer good traction, and I couldn’t rip the knobs off

CheersWe have seen how you like to crack it on Burnsy and that tyre never stood a chance. I tried those Metzlers and butchered them on my gay 250 so you had no hope  If you want to feel better about ripping knobs that quickly try an S12. In the dry weather we are having that will last about 15 minutes on your bike! I used one at Sunny Corner and realised why they call it an S12. The S stands for Sunny Corner and the 12 is how many minutes it lasted
M12 front and MX51 rears are my favs. Depending on stock the MX extra on the back is very good value.STM
November 6, 2013 at 8:25 am #251446yep i have used a mc5 on a ktm 530 thats about how long they last shit tyres the fronts are okay but the side nobs tare of eventualy.as tb said mx51 s are good grip and handle great last okay but the pirrelli extras last better but not as much grip i prefer the mx51 .the m12 don t last real good ether on a 530 have totaly trashed one in three days before. its funny when you own a ktm 530 you try lots of tyres because they destroy them hay and chains and sprockets just my opionion
November 6, 2013 at 8:30 am #251450hay stm try a mx51 front love em

November 6, 2013 at 8:51 am #251454I actually got good mileage out of a S12 rear on both the XR and 530, you just can’t spin it up real god miles actually, Crash always got miles out of them as well on the 650. Spin it up and they last a day. I have some of them under the house still, trashed :pinch:
