Old spark plugs,,,still OK.

Well, not too sure if this has been discused already,but I;v been runing the same two plugs in the RMX for about the last six months of fairly solid riding,,when i say fairly solid ,Im talking on average three rides a fortnight of around 60 to 80 klm’s each ride. After about each two or three rides I just pull the old plug ,stick in the other one that I have pree cleened and do the same again.
Doing a bit of routine mantanence today,changing the plug, it occured to me that the plugs just kept going the same as always, the RMX is going as strong as ever on em,and it even tryed to dump me on me back the other day with a slip of the throtle,jumping a larg rock, and in the top of the rev range it still gives as much as ever,,,,not that I’m in the top of the range all the time Just most of it :laugh: :laugh: How long do they last????

The old honda quad I got rid off had over 1200 hrs with original plug, the plug was a bit rusty but still going strong. Come to think of it the valves were never adjuster either.

That’s the beauty of a spark plug – no moving parts! They can last years with no problem – most blokes I know don’t bother changing theirs. I mean ever!

The other good thing about a spark plug is that its easy to check if they are working.

Sounds like you’re on a good system there, I say stick with it and you’ll be right!

I’ve never fouled a plug on a bike yet (touch wood). I still tend to change them every 12 months or so just as insurance. I also carry a spare plug with me. I guess at the end of the day as long as you carry a spare it’s like Ecks says. Easy to diagnose and easy to fix if something goes astray out on the trail.

I briefly thought I’d fouled a plug once but it turned out one of my mates had turned my fuel tap off during lunch. Luckily for me I noticed it when I looked down at the engine to see what was wrong and didn’t make a goose of myself looking for some more extravagant reason why my bike had died.

The only bike I have that eats plugs is my young fellas KX65. They last about 5 or 6 rides.

I had this problem with the RMX a wile back ,and it turned out to be that the mixture was way too leen,it just rooted the plug affter about 30 minuts of riding,the thing would start to rev out then dye. :angry: the only fix was a new plug,I went through loads of em, till I got it sorted. Amazing what a bit of passed on knolage can do,I,v only ever had smokers,and was used to plug changes,,,but nothing like that. I gues thats why I’m happy to be using the same plugs for so long.

Yeah could be jetting. He only puts around on it. Should really get him a 4 stroke bike.
