Do you know that I can’t even remember how this started or whether it even makes sense. I just know that I am Jan. I went downhill really quick in the car on the way home and TB was a little bit upset that I wasn’t more enthusiastic (I could only give answers such as ‘uh’ as my head felt like it was going to explode). I took all the tablets that I could so I was feeling a little bit confused and as such have no idea of what it was all about.

    P.S. I am not really malicious :)

Turns out I am off sick today from work so I have plenty of time to do my ride report. You know what this means don’t you? Everyone get’s heaps of detail which means it’s probably gonna be super long. Sorry about that but you don’t have to read it if you don’t want to.

So we rush home from work on Friday afternoon and after a quick shower and goodbyes to the kids we head down to TB’s place. We get there around 7:30pm and after our first rum we try to help TB with a moral dilemma. I must live in a different world to TB because those sorts of things never happen to me but anyway moving on.

Bob turns up in his red Ferrari (snigger there Bob) with bike on the back and not long after the lovely Salina arrives with our noodles. They have the best noodle place down there and I just make a pig of myself when it comes to eating them. So after dinner and a few laughs (at DanD’s and Eagles expense unfortunately  ) we head off to bed to be ready for the next day.

We got away a little bit early on Saturday morning and had arranged to meet Scotty at 6am (?) at McDonalds. Not long after we pulled up he pulled in behind us so we were off to meet the others. The timing was absolutely perfect because we actually passed Crash and Mal just before our arranged meeting point for breakfast. We all had yummy egg and bacon rolls and then were on our way to Orange. Everyone also tried to help out with TB’s moral dilemma.

TB had realised on Friday afternoon that he had broken a spoke and was a little bit touchy about it. It seemed that he had forgotten about it until Crash mentioned it to him again so we had to put up with Cranky TB for a little while again. We decided that because we were early that we would go to the Honda shop in Orange to see if he could get another one. I was strictly told by DanD at this stage ‘You are to remain seated. You are not to exit the vehicle for any reason’. Why you ask? He did not want me going in to the bike shop with TB just in case I got more wild ideas in my head about bikes. Who, me?

Not long after TB comes out with filthy hands after rooting around in an old box of spokes with a couple of hopefuls. We then head off to meet White Rocket who was patiently waiting with his giggle hat on ( ) . We need to get some old bull ones made up I reckon.
We unload the bikes at Garry’s and TB’s Mum’s house and around that time realise that TB’s wheel bearings were shot. So DanD and I head into Orange to the bearing shop to buy some new ones. I suppose though it was a good thing because it took TB’s mind off his broken spoke.
Everything is now ready so we head off up into the Pine Forest. Bob volunteers to sweep (thanks Bob). Now this is special this pine forest. It is just so nice and flowing with a couple of tricky bits in as well. I had a couple of offs (one which was just embarrassing). My first was on a small ditch that I watched DanD struggle a little bit on and that always worries me and I think I psyche myself out a bit. Of course I didn’t get up and Bob and White Rocket came to my rescue. By this stage I was warmed up. The next time was just on a dirt road where we veered to the left with a slight rise and camber on the road. Don’t ask. I fell off but I picked my bike back up again and then before I took off again realised that I had a spider on the outside of my goggles. The problem was when I tried to wipe it off it stayed there. That’s when I realised it was actually on the inside of them. The goggles quickly came off and the poor spider relocated.
This is me in the pine forest.

The trails through the next section were really good as well. They opened up a bit into more of twin trail for a little while and then back into the single trail. After this section we decided to head back into town for lunch. But of course not before TB had to pick my bike up for me. I have a real problem with turning around on a track. TB, Crash and I were up front and then decided that we needed to turn around and go back the way we came. I got the bike turned around OK but when I hopped back on (I need to hop off and turn it when it’s tight) I went straight over the other side. D’oh! Very embarrassing.

We head into town for lunch and the meal was fantastic. TB always knows the best places to eat. Here we all are looking very hungry

After lunch we headed back out again and the pictures below are of a section of a trail where when you rode through after someone else it turned into whiteout conditions. No kidding you couldn’t see 1 metre in front of you.

Rocket actually took over sweep duties after lunch and he was so happy to do it. He just kept saying that he just lets everyone go and then has a ball catching up. Thanks again Rocket!

The trails after lunch were really good but one section had a lot of rocks in it. There was a couple of tricky hills in this section and the first one I got up without assistance but the second one (shown in TB’s post above) I fell off. But DanD picked my bike up, I hopped back on and rode the rest of the way up. After that we’d had enough of the rocks and it was getting late so we headed back to the cars to grab our backpacks to go to Hill End.

TB’s already mentioned the dramas we had when we got back to the car so I don’t need to go over them again. Flat tyres all fixed we then headed on to Hill End. I was the sweep for the section from Orange to Hill End but that was fine because I could just go at my own pace and not worry about holding anyone up.

Just down the road we came across a couple of young kids on horses with their Mum and Dad. I was last (being the sweep) and could see that all of our group had slowed right down to a walking pace (I didn’t realise that they had turned their engines off because I was a bit back). Anyway as our leaders went past I could see that the bigger horse of the two started to get spooked. Our group had kept on going but I then watched in horror as the bigger horse (it was a nice palomino) reared and the young girl was flung off the back. The girl landed in a ditch but I watched as the horse then walked backwards and thought she was going to get trampled. Thankfully she didn’t but as the horse has started to then take off the smaller horse which had a little 4-year old girl on it also got spooked and the mother wasn’t able to hold onto it so it took off. It wasn’t going fast but it was too fast to try and grab the reins. Because I was at the back of the group and the horse had not reached me yet and I am a mother who was listening to the girls Mum screaming out and panicking, I rode my bike to the edge of the road (we had crossed to the wrong side of the road so as not to spook the horses) and just jumped off (with the bike still moving), I hit the road and stumbled a bit then ran down the embankment. I was then smart enough to realise (I used to work as a volunteer at a ponderosa) that I would spook it if I ran up to it so I walked up to it and it looked like it was coming over to me but then it veered away. I lunged for the reins but it was too far away. So I stood there with the Mum (she kept screaming out “oh, oh, oh”) and watched as this little girl was bounced up and down in the saddle. I yelled out at one stage to the little girl and told her to jump off but the poor little thing was terrified and screaming. Finally she fell off into the grass and the Mum picked her up and cuddled her, checking if she was OK. The Mum was really quite hysterical by this stage but I was able to talk to her about what happened. I told her that our group was trying to be really considerate and she agreed. She said that she didn’t know what happened with the horses because they never normally got spooked like that. By this stage DanD had also came over to help and he was able to chase down the little pony and bring it back to the Mum. Their Dad was still trying to catch the other horse. After making sure that both girls were OK we went and got back on our bikes to continue to Hill End. Someone had picked my bike up off the road for me and I got on and I was very shaken up. I think it’s because I heard how upset the mother was and as mum of two girls myself quickly empathised with her and it was very upsetting to watch the little girl on the back of the horse with no control over it knowing that she was going to come off at some stage and would it be when the horse was going slower or faster.

We then kept going towards Hill End. TB gave us a bit of a chat before one section warning us that there were some sharp corners with no fence and if you went over then they’d see you next week because that’s how long it would take to get to you. Needless to say I was pretty cautious during this section.

After a slight detour following Bob we reached Long Point Crossing. This is the video that you see in TB’s post. I approached and because it had a concrete road heading down into it I thought that it was just a concrete causeway. Once the concrete stopped and I felt the rocks I did a quick shit, shit, shit. However all went well and I arrived at the other side without even putting my feet down. Thankfully no one came off in the river because that would have been real horrible as all of their clothes would have gotten wet. I have to say too that this is the longest river crossing I have done.

By the time we reached Hill End we were all ready for a shower and a meal. First though TB, DanD and I got into the rums. TB, whilst drinking his rum then decides to sit in his undies on the timber verandah and gets a rather large splinter in his leg. We had all sorts of trouble trying to get it out. Finally I go down to the bar and tell the guy that we need a needle and tweezers and implied that if we didn’t get them we’d sue them because TB got the splinter on their verandah. He was then only too happy to find one of the ladies there who sews to give us what we needed. Not too long after that the splinter was out and we had our showers.

We go down to the bistro and find everyone else is already there. All the meals were ordered and we sat down to relive the day. I ordered lasagne for tea and it was the best tasting lasagne I have ever had.
After tea Mal from Sutto’s and his mate Andrew turned up. They had a couple of drinks with us and then Mal stayed on to watch the pool game before heading back to their room. Bob, Mal and Andrew were staying at a place not far away from the pub.

I go in to watch Mal and Crash play pool because I love playing pool. After they had finished we decided to go doubles. Mal and Crash against DanD and I. Mal was really good and I found out that he is some sort of pool champion. About halfway through our game I banned DanD from playing because he hadn’t sunk one ball. It got down to the black ball and Mal or Crash got it in. So we play again. This time TB is my partner. However he is cranky at me by this time because I was supposedly mean to his mate DanD so he sabotages my game. I ban him from playing as well. I can’t remember who won that one but we play again and on at least one of the games Crash sinks the black and white ball together so my team wins. Crash has a real good hit (?) on him too and a number of times the ball went flying off the table. TB was good at that as well as you can see in one of his photos  .

Then it was time for bed. We had TB in our ‘family room’ and DanD and TB had a little bit of a spit at each other between the rooms regarding an inappropriate ‘shake and bake’ with Mal. But DanD went and gave TB a man hug in bed and they kissed and made up.

During some time early in the morning I woke up with a really sore throat. It was that bad that I started dry reaching in bed because it made me feel like I was going to throw up. I took a heap of tablets and finally after a couple of hours got back to sleep. Only to be woken up what seemed to be 5 minutes later.

TB, DanD and I then had black tea on the verandah (this time TB had his pants on, actually, no, no he didn’t) and we watched Crash sightseeing around Hill End. What’s the go there Crash? How come you didn’t have a hangover on Sunday morning?

We decided to leave at 8:00 on Sunday morning because DanD told TB that if he made it any earlier that I would make sure that he had a long and painful death or something. I wouldn’t have had a problem with the early start though and breakfast was a long way away. We were all ready to go by 8:00 only to find out that we were missing Mal from Sutto’s. After a quick search around Hill End Mal finds the group and says ‘I thought I was early. Isn’t it only 7:00?’

Anyway so we head back to Orange with me as sweep again. It starts to rain not long after we head off which reduced the amount of dust which was good. However some of us had left our wet weather gear back at the cars so we got extremely wet. We get back to Long Point Crossing and I am convinced that I can’t go both ways without falling off (TB reckons this is my biggest problem). But I head through it and get all the way through it again without putting my feet down. Phew! :)

Along the way somewhere we stop off at a cave. We all lined up to walk into it and I have to admit that I felt somewhat claustrophobic. We had a quick photo and then turned and headed towards the light. I was happy to be out of the cave.

Back off again to the cars. At this point we say goodbye to Bob and head off to breakfast, via some single trail of course. It was still raining and the trails got very slippery. I actually stayed on my bike until we went down a hill to turn left into some single trail and when I braked the rear wheel went straight down the right-hand side of me and I landed facing nearly back the way I had come. OBT Mal was actually sweeping by this time and he got a good laugh out of it. Crash stopped too and I told him I was OK and saw that he was laughing at me too. Crash then proceeds to tell Mal via the intercom to tell me that it is very slippery in there. I tell Mal to tell Crash that I think I have already worked that one out.

DanD then has a bit of an off into a tree and because it is so slippery decides that he will go sweep for a while. After a bit more fun (I really liked the trails in there) we head into town for brunch. By then I was ravenous and the pies were really yummy. After brekky Mal from Sutto’s and his mate Andrew decide to head off to Wombeyan Caves. They both came and saw me before they went and said that they were really impressed with my river crossing because I made it look easy. Because I was last I didn’t really get to see anyone else cross it but they reckoned that they were going everywhere. I was really pleased with myself about that. Can you tell?

We head out of town towards Mount Canobolas. It was a little bit of a ride and although Crash had given me his jacket (mine and DanD’s had been left out in the rain, d’oh!) all my riding gear underneath was wet. Yes I had my grip warmers on but my gloves were that wet and cold that I couldn’t feel them. We headed up the mountain and I started to worry about DanD (it’s my job). He had no jacket on and all his gear was wet. The ride up the mountain was freezing. I got to the top, went to the loo and came out and said that I was going to head back. I was pretty certain that given the conditions (mountain + slippery) that I would only be a burden so I would head back into town. TB then convinced DanD to come with me. I protested and said that I would be fine but DanD decided to come back too. He was freezing. We stopped at McDonalds for a while and tried to warm up with a hot coffee but then decided to go back to the car and get changed.

It felt so good to get the wet riding gear off and into dry clothes. When TB got back he was a bit cranky because we were supposed to meet them back at McDonalds. We told him we texted him and that he was pretty smart so we knew he would figure it out.

Bikes were loaded, gear was packed in the cars, goodbyes were said and everybody headed off home.

I know that DanD and myself had an absolute ball and it was great to be with such a great group.

I can’t wait to ride those trails again! :)
