Well this was my second ride back from my broken collarbone and the first ride on the newly acquired GG300. Met Adam, Action, Teza and Lachlan at the Shell carpark. Where we headed off to Palmdale Rd for the start of our ride. We stopped at the gravel carpark and I adjusted the chain on my bike as it just didnt seem right as discussed with Adam a bit looser is better than over tight. We then headed off into the trails, There had been a bit of rain around earlier in the week and some of the Puddles had a decent bit of water in them, which made for fun wheelying into them :woohoo: This was Actions first ride back after a long time off the bike and I got to say when I was sweeping it looked as though he was geling with the the WR250F very nicely indeed a bit better than the last tie I saw him ripping saplings out of the ground on his DRZ  We came to a nice wet red clay hill and I was following Adam he stopped and I had to take an alternate path which was unsuccessful and I dismounted off into the bush all under the amused eyes of Teza 😆 Took a fair bit of effort to get myself gong again but really nothing a bit of ride fitness will fix. :silly:
The next few KM was all single trail :silly: very tight and twisty and doubling back on itself it was all good fun and the 300 and I was feeling right at home. Adam led us through some tracks that I had never been on before and would like to get to know them a bit better they were awsome and not real rutted out they all seemed to flow nicely and had some good scenery as well. Didnt see the four wheel drive that was parked up a tree that Adam mentioned at a previous snake break.
We eventually found our way to a taped off track that some peeps had been using for practising on. I got all excited and let the GG have her head and had a ball ripping through there. :wooho We came to the base of a pretty good hill and we all stopped and had a bit of a bite to eat. I went half way up the hill for an explore and then rode back down, maybe another day
Adam told me to have a crack at the single trail we just came up didnt have to ask me twice and I was off 👿 Through the moist loamy black dirt and small creek crossings I was having a ball, the front end of the Gasgas was staying planted where I wanted it and was a joy to ride the only thing that slowed me down was my fitness which I have got to work on
We all regathered then Lachlan took over and led us up a pretty big hill that followed the Sydney-Newcastle Gas line everyone flew up it with no issues. We did some more trails then headed into some recently marked single trails with lots of off camber turns and trees jumping out at you.this led us down into a ravine with the ensuing uphill looking a bit of a challenge. Lachlan went up first on his 530 and with a bit of struggle near the top made it, I was next took off in second snicked her into third and was going quite well traction was minmal at best and unfortunatley I stopped within 10 metres from the top and turned around and rode back down the hill for another crack. Teza Adam and Action then rocked up, Teza took off with a heap of determination and got to the same spot I had trouble with, lachlan came down and assisted and he got there good effort Teza!My turn again this time I just kept the 300 pinned in second and made it easy. Action was next on the 250 and took a different line to the left he had the little yammy screaming and launched himself over the final drainage hump. Then came Adams go, he was reving the tits off the Kato and it looked like he was doing it easy until he got to the top and jumped the top drainage ditch, the 350 landed on the back wheel and I dont know if Adam slipped off or what but the bike launched itself skyward with Adam flapping off the back and it came crashing down quite heavily. It was then that he discovered that the engine would not turn over, even after trying to bump start, Adam was not at all happy especially considering this was the first ride back after he had repaired the engine only days before.
Out came the tools and and a bit of investigation was done on the engine, his repair was still doing what it should be doing so that was a load off his mind, but the real problem could not be identified,so it was tow rope to the rescue. Action was the tow er and it was only a short trip back thru the quarry under the freeway bridge back into Ourimbah.
Lachlan helped me load up my bike on the Triton and we went back to Adams house for a quick beer and a chat of the days events.
It was a good day out with a great bunch of blokes and I had a ball I will be doing that ride a bit more often. Everyone got thru unscathed and everyone enjoyed themselves. Happy days!Ps thanks for the Eggs Adam had some for brekky this morning.

July 22, 2013 at 5:10 am #246680Great report Ollie
Sounds like ya’s had fun.
You seem happy with your new toy.
Whats the go with the 350, Adam.
Hope its nothing serious. Doesn’t sound good though.
A lot of people have been advising me to get a 350 instead of a 2 banger.
Maybe I’ll just stick with the 500 and continue to get a flogging every time we go for a ride.
Cheers
MurphJuly 22, 2013 at 5:14 am #246681Yeh! nice report there Olie
I also had a top day out riding in the forest with these blokes, I must say after Mt Seavew, and Ourimbah yesterday, I haden’t realised how flat my local riding grounds were, with the ecception of river gorges which are generaly short steep stepups,,,nothing too long to ware me out.
So into the mountains we go,,some of this stuff looks a bit scary through my gogles, and I’m no fan of long slippery down hills    but musn’t let the teem down  any way I hope I didn’t winge too much
Even so I thourerly enjoied the tracks we road and some realy nice forest,,,from what I seen of it in my periferal vision, cause I wasn’t taking my eyes of the track for one second asspecialy with those thick hanging vines, ready to catch you under the chin just as your dodging a particularly nasty looking rock or washout   oh yeh! and the bits that you realy needed to be up on the pegs, but the over head bush was way to lowKept me on my toes. “I know what yu thinking,,,,christ, stop winging Teza Thats what dirtbike riding is”   And I totaly agree and enjoied every minut of it :cheer:
I realy liked the fact that I almost managed to ride up that last long steep slipery hill,,,once young Locky gave me a hand to pic my bike up,and I caught my breath and made the restart from that point :woohoo: :woohoo: I was wraped. that gave me a chance to stand at the top to watch the rest of the guyes hit it,and a front row vew of Adam,s very gracefull back flipThankfully Adam landed a lot softer than his 350 did. Realy hope there’s not too much damage there Mate.
Thanks for all the encouragment fellas, I was out of my comfort zone at times but when my hart rate slowed down, here and there,it gave me the chance to real enjoy it.
I also had some fresh hen eggs for breaky,,Thanks for that Adam
And thanks to every one for a top day out,,,,,on the bikes,,,,in the bush,,,,love it.
Cheers Teza.July 22, 2013 at 8:33 am #246682Thanks guys for a fun ride
well while it lasted anyway  I was having a ball :woohoo:
Ollie pretty much covered the days events and my moment of “I’m not quite sure what happened” :pinch:
After the boys left I took the rocker cover off to look into what maybe the problem. I could rock the engine back and forth a bit but not round and round
Took the cams out and was just looking around and noticed something on top of the cam chain drive gear.
It appears that the resident stray washer that had been happily living in the engine took offence to my flipping of the bike and decided it would be funny to lodge itself in a position that would end the days enjoyment
Where did it came from  How long had it been there  I’ll never know

I couldn’t set the cam chain tensioner so I assumed the ratchet component suffered under the strain of the extra loading caused by the washer.
I had a manual tensioner from Sam’s bike on the shelf so a quick check on the web and they’re the same.
I got the bike back together this arvo and she started up fine however a bit rattly.
Given it’s been going round and round for a while now I guess its time for a freshen up and proper check of various components (especially those parts associated with the cam chain
)

July 22, 2013 at 8:59 am #246724Glad you got that sorted Adam

Saw some cool climbs by 2T’s
Saw some cool climbs by 4T’sMay say, I might keep trying to hang on to the 5 Hungey a little longer.
BTW. She performs much better with the standard fork springs in the front. Why did I not buy the bike in standard trim, I don’t know????? :pinch:

Adam.
Great report guys, looks like it was a good ride I haven’t ridden Ourimbah since I worked there years and years ago.
Adam with this washer are you sure something else isn’t undone or loose etc because I struggle to believe a washer could have just sat there unmoving for 7000kms. I reckon it’s not the first time the bike as been upside down and I am sure the amount a dirt bike gets tossed around falls over and gets air it should have got tangled up in something inside the engine before now.
Is it possible it belongs behind a nut or hub or something from the previous repair and was sitting in the sump until upside down caused it to fall into the timing chain? I mean it’s happened very soon after that failure and repair, this makes sense to my mechanical thinking (not that it is the be all and end all  )
Just putting it out there is all, good luck with itTB

Don’t worry TB that crossed my mind too.
However apart from being a long and treacherous path to the other side of the engine, there were no washers in the starter / flywheel area other than a larger thrust washer which is still in place behind its circlip.
I took the timing chain out today and it has suffered a bit of damage so will be replaced. It’s stiff in the links that hit the washer and I’m guessing this is the new noise.
Adam.
