OK, so the Berg is now officially “run-in” :woohoo: Went out to Balangalo state forest yesterday with a mate on his KTM (we took a sicky) and putted around (sort of) for four hours. Had a ball even though it wasn’t full-tilt, and Balangalo is quite tame as far as rides go.

Anyhow … Bike shop guy told me to run it in at 40:1 which I did, he also said “normal operation” should be 50:1, the manual says 60:1.

Any recommendations or experiences? Also, for Engine and Gearbox Oil types/brands? About to give it it’s first “Service” :)

BTW: I’ll be putting in the JD Jetting kit soon, does this effect the above?

    Cheers

I think the advice you received is pretty spot on re the fue/oil l ratio’s ;) if you use a fully synthetic oil. I personally run my gasgas 300 at 40:1 using a semi synthetic (Caltex Havoline)

Gearbox oil I use is Castrol VMX but the Motul synthetic stuff is pretty good as well.

Good luck with the Berg Raz. B)

My GG has the JD Kit in it as well the only difference is the taper of the needles. I think with a bit of research you should be able to find a better / cheaper alternative ( I think a Suzuki Rm needle was the go )

Old school rules for riding 2banggers
32:1 when your cutting in the trails.

40:1 when your trialing the trails.

50:1 when you have them down pat

Running in a 2bannger I wouldn’t go over 40:1 for 2 tanks the up the mixture and get into it.

Yeah, Moto already gave me the run-down on the Needles and Jetting .. too late, I’d already bought the JD Kit, never mind, live and learn, wasn’t too expensive anyway.

BTW: You have no idea how VERY close I was to buying the GG instead of the Berg, love them :)

    Thanks

No worries RAZ, I reckon the new 2012 GG are very Good. The Berg/KTM also very good only thing that does concern me with these two is the starter motor problems oh and the PDS

Hope to catch up for a ride with ya one day (im originally from Kempsey)

Then get yourself BACK to Kempsey! :) It’s a good place (mostly).

    What’s “PDS”?

Re Starter Motor, the guy at the shop told me its an ‘electric re-start’, not an electric starter … “always kick it cold” was the advice.

Mate I would love to go back to Kempsey or the Mid North coast at least. Work and family not so keen :(

PDS is your rear suspension ( I have seen some good offs on an older KTM (09) ) might be sorted by now tho

50:1 is fine with a fully synth oil.

I used Dexron ATF fluid in my gearbox. It works well and changes gear nicer than some more expensive oils. It’s also so cheap you can drop the oil at much more regular intervals if you feel the need.

Yep same here. Motul 800 at 50:1 and Motul gearbox oil as well.

with the starting problem its not so much the actual starter motor its the bendix(the throw out gear from the starter to primary) mine went at about 120 hours cost $160 to replace i used to grease it but crap used to come up through the breather ( you might want to have a google on youtube at slavens racing he does a wet start mod where he seals off the breather and puts a bit 5wt fork oil ) this was a problem on the 2010 they might have fixed this on later models
the jd kit takes a lot of guessing out of it i know moto has sorted a lot out with rm needles ( i also know moto likes his bikes very snappy with running no powervalve spring at all and the powervalve spring preload wound right off dont get me wrong theres nothing wrong with this but everyone likes there bike diferent) ive had them for my husky and have one on the way for my CR 250 really fixed any carby problem and if you getting something from the states wack a jd jet kit on the list to ,$80 for the CR
