Hey TB, what do I have to do regarding the spark plug to try and stop that ping, did you say go down one number?
If I go down one number, is that a cooler plug?

It differs with plug manufacturers Mick.

What Octane fuel are you using? If you are using 91 you could use 95, this will help prevent detonation. It may also be a better option than changing to a cooler plug.

Already use 95 oct, this pinging has only started since I put the 38ml mikuni flat slide on her.

Thought we came up we the thought after to many rums that you should go down at least one plug number as a trial, I used to run a cooler plug in my 600, and went one cooler again when I did the cape

In never worry about what fuel I use, 91, 95 98 or shell 100 octane its all good in my 650 or my old 600. Never has made a difference as far as pinging went

I’m struggling to understand how using a higher grade fuel doesn’t help pinging. Especially if you normally use 91 and have tried 100 and it still does it. Something is definately wrong.

Well you heard how bad she pings when it does,so I will try the plug thing first then dick around with jetting after that.
I have taken a few days off work for family reasons and am taking the kids for a ride this morning, then the missus has this freaking long list of chores for me to do this arvo so I may not get to play with the XR untill the weekend.
You guys may not hear from me for a day or two either.

If a colder spark plugs resolves the issue then you are getting pre-ignition, not pinking or pinging as the Septic Tanks call it. Pre-ignition/pre-detonation is caused by excess heat allowing the air/fuel mix to ignite before the spark is introduced. The excess heat means the cylinder pressure, and therfore temperature is higher which combusts the fuel before it is intended to do so. If it is solely the plug running hot and causing the detonantion then installing a colder plug (maybe 2 if it’s bad) will make more than likely make the problem go away.

If it’s not the plug the problem will remain, until the cylinder pressure/temperature is reduced or you change to a higher octane fuel that will not ignite until higher cylinder pressures are achieved thus (more than likely) solving your problem.

Pinking is a different story that we will save for another day.

Enjoy your time off with your family Mick :)

As my pommy friend has explained above that is what goes on. lol :woohoo:

I was told that if I put the correct piston back in my bike ( as now it is in a detunned setup) and I dont get 98+ octane fuel all the time it will not be happy and will cause pre-ignition and lead to a pinging type noise! That is why I run the standard piston with the lower compression ratio.

take it easy Mick talk soon

The mighty XR no longer pings!!!!! I sorted it out by raising the needle one notch and ,no more ping.

So it was a fuel ping, you going the colder plug anyway?

Actually I thought I might go one colder and see how she goes. She was certainly going well today though!!

Since I lifted the needle on Geoff Ballard’s advice, the ping has gone, now another problem rears it’s head. She is running to rich now and blowing a bit of black smoke. It is certainly running well though.I put a new plug in when I raised the needle and here is a pic of it with the old plug. The new plug is on the right. Looks real rich to me,what now? When does it run rich?
    Full throttle
    Half throttle or idle?
IIRC (and it’s been a while since I’ve tickled an XR), raising the needle richens her up in the mid-range of throttle position a tad??? might need to reduce the main jet (oh bugger it! now I’m off to research XR jetting! I hate forgetting things! I hate getting old!)
