JE pistons are the piston of choice for Japanese car modifiers. If they are good in a blown 6 pot pumping out 1000hp then you would think the XR might just be okay ;)

The decent forged ones would be the way to go :)

    Mick,

099.93 stamped on the top of your piston is the manufactures size of the piston.

Standard XR600 pistons are 97mm and the 630 big bore kit uses 100mm pistons. You can verify this by measuring the lower part of the piston skirt. Donot measure higher as most pistons are narrower at the top than the bottom. I agree with MOTO when he suggests forged pistons, whether you choose JE, ROSS, WISECO any forged is better than a cast piston. When choosing an aftermarket forged piston keep in mind the compression ratio. Standard Honda pistons give a 9.0 to 1 compression ratio. Looking at your existing piston in the earlier post you are probably running a 10 or 10.25 to 1 compression ratio. I suggest staying under 10.5 if you want to use standard pump fuel. DONOT use the Honda manufactures specifications to check the piston to bore clearance as this is for cast pistons. Forged pistons will require extra clearance as they will expand more when at operating temperature compared to a cast piston. I think from memory Honda recommend a piston to bore clearance of 0.01mm to 0.05mm. This is not enough clearance for forged pistons.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

    Continued…

Obviously Tripper no longer trusted me with the job of restoring the XR,either that or he couldn’t wait to ride it. He employed KTMBULL and KTMRAT to take the engine out of his current bike and put it into the newly painted frame.
    Here is the old beast.

She is very rough around the edges but the engine is sweet.
It has a full Staintune stainless exhaust. A 630 kit with a Ballards Big finned head.
And numerous other blingy bits and pieces

We had a working bee on it last night in my shed and the plan was to swap all the good bits over to another frame.
Here is a frame I prepared earlier.

Also it was decided that the swingarm was in better condition on the donor bike too, so it had to come out.

I was very concerned over Dave’s choice of gloves though. He is a KTM freak, it disturbs me to imagine what else he uses those gloves for.

Dr Dave (AKA KTMRAT) preparing the patient for its new heart.

Engine specialist Bill ,preparing to tear out the power plant for transplant.

Tripper didn’t do much at all, he pretty well stood in the background, drinking beer and picking his nose.
I suppose he did through in the occasional one liner.
    DSC00841.jpg

Dave shows off the progress so far. (wish he would take those stupid KTM gloves off)

No matter where you leave a tray of oil, someone either ends up kicking it or dropping a bolt in it, these two idiots dropped two bolts in it, before they thought to move it. The rum was just starting to kick in by this stage.

    DSC00850-1.jpg

The engine, ready to rip!! Heavy bitch too, I don’t mind telling you.

    DSC00852.jpg

Me and Bull thought something was funny.

    DSC00844.jpg

It was at this stage that we downed tools as things were getting silly. It was 10pm and I am sure every swear word and roar of laughter coming out of my shed was being heard by my neighbours. After the boys went on their merry ways, I snuck inside the house to an icy reception from my missus. So you can imagine why I still haven’t told her, they are all coming back tonight to finish the job!!!!!!
    Trouble brewing…..

    To be continued…………
