Project CAT XR
Now I have the engine running sweet in Tripper’s “new” XR, the challenge is to turn it into a bush weapon.
Tripper wanted to go with his signature CATERPILLAR theme, so we started swapping plastics and all the good stuff off his old XR onto the new one. Between the two bikes there is plenty of good bolt on stuff and when we are finished this bike is gunna be a great bike for the bush and hopefully something Tripper wont break easily..Tripper, Connor and I went into them last night and started swapping plastics.
Tonight we hope to finish the plastic swap, Then we will fit the pro Tapers, get rid of the el cheapo road tyres and fit some knobbies.
Future plans include fitting a full Staintune system and a flat slide Mikuni.March 27, 2009 at 6:57 pm #126580Well the big girl is ready for her maiden trip to the bush this morning. After many hours of spannering, chin scratching and drinking, I think (read hope) she is ready for Tripper to ride.
Last night we put some knobbies on her, some new wheel bearings and a general tidy up.
Here is the finished project. The original Cat XR is now looking a bit sad as we robbed all the goodies off her to make the one you beaut bush machine. Being able to do this highlighted the need for everyone to become an organ doner.

AnonymousFound out what the problem was Mick?
March 29, 2009 at 10:51 pm #127274Nope I haven’t even looked at it. I have the shitz about it all at the moment.
I have been working on my bike instead. Needs new FW bearings again, 826km out of the last ones.March 29, 2009 at 11:35 pm #127275
AnonymousThat’s not good. Did you pack the bearings with grease before you installed them? I’ve never bothered doing that on any of my car (over the years) bearings. Then again they haven’t generally been ridden through muddy bog holes.
Your bro’ must be annoyed with the bike by now too I would imagine.

He wouldn’t be annoyed as he had hardly lifted a spanner on the bloody thing.

Doesn’t matter how cheap they are they could be 50cents, seeing as though his seal runners/ wheel spacers are rooted the new seals wont seal and the brgs will fail very quickly.
This time Mick buy a balls kit with seals, brgs and spacers / seal runners, these are hardened no more problem and next time you can buy Ollie’s cheap seals and brgs
From experience

April 2, 2009 at 7:15 pm #127883i just ordered new genuine spacers/seal runners from Honda and they where $15 each.
April 2, 2009 at 8:16 pm #127887If they are made of aluminum Mick the seals will wear into the running area and make them useless in a very short time. When you get the new ones go to you local bearing service and purchase a couple of speedi sleeves and fit them, they are made of stainless steel and will last years
Heres some more about them
