The SM has milder cams, a thicker base gasket for less engine compression, a CV carby instead of the flat slide and a smaller header pipe.
The E also gets better suspension. The SM gets an inverted fork which at first would seem better but they are very basic forks with only preload adjustment and NO compression or rebound adjusters.
The SM shock has preload adjustment and low speed compression only and no rebound adjustment. The E has high and low speed compression and rebound. The SM also has less travel front and rear. All up the suspension on the E is far better than the SM.
The rear swing arms are also different, not sure if they are different lengths but the rear wheel adjusters are different.
I personally think if you want a motard DRZ400 your better of converting an E than buying the SM. All you need for the E is the 17 inch wheels and bigger brake then you end up with more power and better suspension then a standard SM.
To get a SM up to E spec would cost a shitload more and the SM is more expensive of the show room floor to start with.
Thanks for that Scotty!
I was going to put a post on that I thought that the suspension would be better on the E than the SM however I am just a girl so I wouldnt have had a clue whether that was correct or not. Good suspension is really important to me.
so you can fang it over speed humps and over the middle of round-a-bouts?

October 23, 2009 at 5:59 pm #157792Last night here at my place after the cars had been packed and the bikes loaded on the trailer we sat around for a couple of quiet liquid style refreshments. Now maybe a few bundys and coke had freed Kylie’s tongue or just maybe the bundy just let her say what she really felt or maybe she was pissed or pissed of at Dan but here is the quote of the day
The conversation got around the the motard bike, Kylie wants pillion pegz fitted for some reason and we all know what woman are like when they want something
I said “Well Kylie if they didnt come out with and you change the complete sub frame to fit a set the bike still wont be ADR’ed as rego legal for pillion use on the road”
Kylie replied with “I would really like a set but”
Dan said “Kylie its ilegal”
Kylie takes a swig from her can of bundy and said “Getting around with a head like yours should be ilegal Dan but you still do it”
     :laugh:Well we rolled around laughing, Kylie just went back to her can smug look on her face was very funny

AnonymousI am getting very angsty now because it is so close to being ready. The date set for putting everything together is the 14/15th November which is only 2 weekends or 8 days or 192 hours or 11520 mins or 691200 seconds away, roughly.
Craig from Tee n Cee told me today that my plastics are ready so I am hoping that TB can pick them up for me and make sure that I have them before the 14th. I had to have a special modification made for the bash plate and that is now done (Thanks BigT
).
We still have some cleaning and polishing and greasing etc but it should be all ready on 15th to go on it’s maiden SM voyage.
It’s going to be pretty special.

AnonymousOnly a couple of days to go now. I tell you what though, Sutto’s have been absolutely fantastic with this project. I am sooo impressed with them. When you get service like I have had, it guarantees repeat business. I know we had the pie thread but maybe we should start a bike shop thread.
Anyway it’s all go for the project. TB is the project manager and will be in charge all weekend making sure it goes to plan. We have also engaged the services of Eagle to help out with a few things where required. Other than that no one will get to see it until I post the photo’s on Sunday night. No sneak peeks at all.
I say that thinking that everyone would be as excited as me. Obviously not the case but it should give you an idea of how excited I am.
