Picked one up on special, never used them before you like em or hate em?
November 4, 2009 at 7:00 am #159474I have used them twice and fitted one to the rear of Chops banana which I used for two rides.
My experience and opinion leaves me with this, when new they are a really good gripping tyre in all conditions, but once they lose there edge the performance drop was very noticeable. I ran a range of pressures from Blues style of feel to 14psi on Chops. They didn’t wear that well especially the one on the chops banana. I see lots of people use them, Ballards team uses them which from my experience would be fine as they change them out when they loose there edge in competitionTyres start that far ranging and open debate, use it try it you may love it. Tell us all your experience, any tyre that doesn’t throw its tread of like I saw recently is a good tyre (cant remember the brand)

November 4, 2009 at 7:34 am #159481When I bought my bike second hand it had a half worn one on the back and it had the traction of a thong on soap.
Brand new they may be OK but I have to agree with TB, once the edge is worn they are slippery suckers!

November 4, 2009 at 8:31 am #159482the fronts are pretty good the rears are dog shit
November 4, 2009 at 9:52 am #159475yeah the never ending discussion,
ill see next week, i thought my last m12 was excellent on climbs and was originally hanging on good, when i first got it soon after was average.
Haven’t had the same tire on twice yet i’m going to run out of brands soon.
November 4, 2009 at 10:18 am #159493Ran them front and back in the 4day. They are OK. They don’t excel in any particular area. Grant here runs them religiously. I moved on from them quite easily.
November 4, 2009 at 6:49 pm #159496I had one on the rear that went egg shaped after 400km and I thought I had a buckled wheel so I dont rate them.
November 11, 2009 at 11:28 am #159476Got to give the new rear tire a bash this week.
Clocked up 80k,noticed it gripped good on a steep climb with stone covered with dirt, and was tops on a steep rock strewn climb.
Bugger all wear but with low kays and not one of those big bore’s expect that.
So far so good ill put a few hundred kays on it and see.
320 k to go Mick and ill see what happens?
November 11, 2009 at 7:13 pm #160534Mine was so badly delaminated that when I was on the tar riding home, some guy chased me down in his car to tell me that there was something seriously wrong with my back wheel.
July 13, 2010 at 8:46 am #159477About to swap my second MC5 i asked about here, the first one died early due to a faulty tire guage and a pinch flat along with the tube and beadlock,so just replaced it with the same.
Ended up doing 657 K so not to bad but tractions a bit lacking on the climbs now but fine for s/t use and fire trails,so could leave it a few more rides, especially if it was summer.
Would i buy one again? yep
July 14, 2010 at 10:48 am #159478I ran one twelve months ago & for $100 they are as good as any other tyre when new. Did a 3 hour club enduro in rocky terrain & it survived, I’ve run a few other tyres & I wouldn’t rate it any higher or lower than the others. If I didn’t get Bridgestones cheap I’d be running them myself
We’ve back to backed an M404 & a Gritty ED12 with no real difference, possibly around Sunny Corner the Gritty has the edge on longevity.
Someone at Yellow Mountain on a 250 2t near shreded an MC5 on the way up to Tottenham last year.
July 14, 2010 at 11:07 am #183712some people love them but they don t work on my 530 grip okay when new but spin up and send me in all directions after a few rides and make me look like more of a wally than usual

OK if your Ballard and swap they out all the time. I have always thought Michelins (except M12 rears) are the most consistent tyre from new to bald but wear to quick. Am loving the scorpions but wonder SB if you werent on the bridgestone deal what you would run because I cant get a run grip or wear wise out of a bridgestone. I am always trying something new like the IRC on the rear of my bike and the a new Dunlop for a run

Like I said in an earlier post, I don’t find a lot of difference between any of the Intermediate MX tyres. I haven’t run them all however I’ve tried most.
I run my tyres out till there is nothing left on the rear & the side knobs are worn off the fronts, I guess this is the reason why I’m not critical of a tyre.
I’ve even run a Duro rear. On a Coffs to Stuarts Point ride. I was the one struggling the least on most of the hills. I rated it ok except it couldn’t handle transport on bitumen.
I’ve even got a 120/100 ED12 on the bike at the moment, for a big tyre I can’t even tell it’s there compared to a lighter MX tyre.
Like I said for $100 an MC5 is a great tyre & if I was buying at retail I’d be buying them or something else that was available for $100.
If the tyre was to last only one or two rides or it was muddy I’d buy a Duro for $78.
