With the big ride to hill end and me only having the original air filter for the DRZ I figured it was time I got some spare filters. Headed down to Supercheap Auto and grabbed a couple of the Ready Filters. Good value at $15 and convenient for lazy bugger like me who don’t like getting there hands dirty.
Got home and fitted one straight away. First thing I noticed was once fitted the Ready Filter was smaller in overall size than the original. It fitted snuggly over the cage but seamed to have less foam making it smaller. Put a smear of grease around the base and in she went, nice tight seal.
Well the Hillend ride was always going to be a test for any filter, 240km to Hillend with thick dust 90% of the way. Over night stop at Hillend and a quick service had me pulling out the Readyfilter, which was not surprisingly clogged with dirt, and tossing it in the bin (much to Champo’s disgust). I chucked in a fresh Readyfilter and was ready for a few Bourbons, a good sleep and day two.
Day two was a little shorter with a bit more wind helping clear some of the dust. At times the dust was still bad but toward the end I got some fresh air and lead the group. Still a dusty ride but not as bad as day one.
Got the DRZ home pushed it to the corner of the shed all dirty outa sight outa mind. Couple of weeks now and I though I better get her out and clean her up, not to mention the fork need to be sent away. Gave it a good wash, pulled the forks off, now it was time to clean the dreaded filter.
I pulled of the cover and was not surprised to find a brown mess. Ripped out the Readyfilter which went straight to the bin (sorry Champo). Took a look down into the air boot, past the filter mount, and was not happy to see it looked the same as the inside of the air box itself, DUST.
Now I know this was a dusty ride and was always going to be a good test on filters but I’ve ridden in dust as bad before, even on trail bike rallies with 1000 other dust stirrers but I have never had dust get past a filter before.
Back to cleaning and oiling filters for me, Readyfilter can go and get f…….
Not just dust but some large particles.

AnonymousScott,
Thanks for the report, albeit a sad one for yourself. It would be good to hear from others on the same trip and maybe some comparative pics, if they haven’t already cleaned the filter.

February 21, 2009 at 7:39 am #123263if you get more air air in you can get more fuel fuel in and go faster faster

Sorry to see that, I have heard only good reports before bout the ready filter, glad I couldn`t get em before Hill End for the kwaka, so i stuck with the Uni Filter, the outer skin was dusty so I swapped it for the old original kawa filter for day 2,,,, Then promptly pulled out at the first stop “DAMN ANKLE”
Hope all turns out well with the valves etc, don`t wanna see another Banana like Chops:blush:
CheersFebruary 21, 2009 at 8:30 am #123266Wow that real ordinary, I saw them used at Finke by GHR and they didnt have that problem, sorry Scotty I suggested them for the ride and feel real bad  , but only because I had seen them used and we used them on Chops 450 with so much success
If you want to go through the valves Scotty as I live close by am willing to help

February 21, 2009 at 8:45 am #123254Just an after thought Scotty, is the filter damaged or hasn’t been seated correctly somewhere, only ask because I have seen to many people including myself use them and not had a drama?

February 21, 2009 at 8:59 am #123255Nah, not good news at all.
I used filter skins bought (from Ballard i think 4 for 20 odd bucks) and a twin air filter.
Changed 1 skin about half way to Hillend and it was filthy, but the filter still looked good. The second one wnet on at the pub and that stayed on till home.
The skin was filthy aggain but the filter was in pretty good condition.
Next time will carry a spare filter and change that as well just for piece of mind. The filter and the third skin
Scotty I hope all is well mate
February 21, 2009 at 9:07 am #123268Didn’t check the one at hillend just pulled it out and threw it in the bin then put in the new one. The one I got here has no damage and when there is a nice clean grease seal on the inside of the airbox. Even the hole in the middle where the cage comes through is clean. The filter had a light brown haze on the inside which is what alerted me to the fact dust might have been getting through in the first place.
Gunna give it a service and see how it feels, fingers crossed.
February 21, 2009 at 9:10 am #123272Just thinking maybe Ben Grabham had no problem because he is faster than the speed of dust,
