Just got back from a bike ride to the tip of Cape York.
Fairly standard ride bit the thing that I wish to bring to notice was the pleasantness of Anna and Luke Centofani. They are the young couple that run the Laura roadhouse. On our way north we stopped at their establishment and had a meal. Although I only wanted coffee they told me to help myself to a cup and refused to accept payment for it.
We planned our trip back south so as to stop and fuel and get an evening meal there to help repay for their kindness. We asked if we could camp at the roadhouse, offering to give them the money we would otherwise pay to camp elsewhere.
They readily agreed and not only supplied us with a camp site but with bathroom facilities as well. In the morning we asked for coffee and were suprised when we were presented with a bacon, egg and toast breaky. Although we tried to pay for the meal and camping facilities our money was refused, on the house they said.
It was truly suprising for two strangers to be treated to such hospitality and we are greatly thankful.
If you are heading to the tip please plan to call into the roadhouse at Laura and sat g’day to the always smiling Anna and Luke.
I wish them all the best in their endeavours and the fish burgers are great also!

We stopped there in 2004, like all the places we stayed and stopped at on the trip people looked after us big time.

Hello Dennis, Tell them about the next part of the trip where you couldn’t get any sleep and what you did as you rode through their camp. God works in misterious ways, I believe you hold the world record for fixing a flat tyre.

Know that old fella has blown the beans(and trust me, he can) I must lay claim to being the all time fastest flat tyre fixer ever.
We camped at the famous Lions Den on the Bloomfield track on our way south from Cooktown. An inconsiderate party of (for want of a better word) ‘louts’ set up camp nearby and without any concern for others played loud music and yelled till after 4 in the morning. By this time I gave up the notion of getting any sleep, (45 minutes all night) so we packed up and left at 6am but not before riding through said louts camp site, revving our engines and yelling at them to wake up and kicking their swags as we rode through.
Now, being a firm believer in discression being the better part of valour(read yellow streak,2 of us, too many of them) we bolted on down the Bloomfield. With one eye on the mirror we had made 30 k when going around a corner my back wheel jammed against the swing arm. Even old fella would have been impressed with the way I slid around said corner.
A piece of wire bought a rapid holt to our getaway, I considered throwing the bike over the embankment and running for it , but when I looked down the road there was no trail of dust. Figuring we were a bit ahead of them if they were pursing us I practically threw a new tube in and took off to resume our escape. So yes, I can fix flats damn fast!
