I have read about plenty of guys ride reports with 690`s loaded up (after changing the tank bolts, upper & lower, run the braced touratech rack and most have no probs)
I get 200k from my standard tank (riding like a girl apparently)so another 9 litres will suffice for most of my planned trips. Can also run a bladder or maybe Rotopax if needed I suppose….
I guess I am rather, no very inexperienced in the subject, but I reckon they are ok
I have only seen one DR break a frame and its ridden hard by a big man :pinch: Yeah thats all correct Eags and for most it will be alright, I am only repeating what the KTM sales people told me. 200kms is a little short when you get out the back for fuel range but. I did look at that one I walk past it all the time  and spoke in detail about it, it does look good that fairing
The twin tanks could be bigger but, I think they are a bit small to use the standard radiator shrouds. And you dont ride like a girl mate
Kat rides heaps better than you

A Mongrel she is :laugh:Also I see MickP & Tryhard have had no real problems with theirs,,, and they have been LOADED UP
Yeah the 9 litre tanks are a tad small (especially for the price) :S But the Safari tank is butt ugly and uncomfortable to ride with I think from some reports,,, butt ugly can be lived with for the mileage I suppose but I thin 300+ k is of for me at this stage. A bladder is always an optionLike Left One carries
Cheers
Oh yeah,,, Sorry Krusty for the thread hijack,,,, But YOU started it mate :laugh:March 15, 2012 at 1:51 am #218144EAGLE`02 wrote:

Ummmm I am sure Mick has repaired the rear and or braced his. The sales people are saying the rear of the bike won’t take it
BTW Krusty the thread title should be blue, red and yellow shouldn’t it

March 15, 2012 at 9:45 am #218062No worries boys… The thread is about Orange!!!
I’ll probably start a Garage Thread for the new steed… One more sleep…
I think any bike the Adventure boys ride from this forum will need some sort of bracing!!!
Nicks racks needed extra bracing and remember Mal doing some extra welding to yours right after buying it.. Yes the bike was fine for the weight but there was some bracing done to the Big Tens..
Isn’t about how you setup and modify the bike for how you want to ride it and where you want to take it in the end?

It was very trick looking.. Has a bit of the 990 look to it..Both Dan and Chris said you cant load a 690 up like we do and ride them where and how we do with the stuff we do because you will break the back of them  I know I asked the question cause it looks ok The twin tanks only hold 9 litres more fuel than a standard 690. The fairing looks good but

They come standard with rear pegs so KTM must be reasonably confident that if you throw your misses or kids on the back the thing isn’t going to snap in half a mile down the road. With the added bracing of the pannier racks i would think 20 kilo of gear should be no drama. As a matter of fact my 690 carries less weight with me and my gear then your 530

The quote you have used above Deano is from two KTM salesman, the people that sale them why would they say it if it wasnt true  . If you think it will carry 20 kilos over hill and dale do it. Fact is they are known for not having any subframe strength same as an XR650 for example. If you need to make it personal like your last line to justify whatever knock yourself out champ!

Yes the bike was fine for the weight but there was some bracing done to the Big Tens..Mine has never had any frame welding, Mal modified the home made racks they came with mine read the story in the 10k thread. Nicks Barrett racks and mine had braces added to the racks to stop side movement, further to that I told them from the start they would need bracing but they didnt agree until Nicks broke. They are now the same as the racks on Eagle’s bike
Sensitive lot you KTM guys
Look forward to your new KTM thread Krusty

You have hit the nail on the head there Krusty. Its all about what suits you and what you want to do with it.
You should have lots of fun with the 350 – set up the suspension for your weight etc is the most important thing with the PDS rear end.
Have fun and be safe

Yeh I have modified the pannier racks from original to be similar to the current KTM/Touratech pannier frames that have twin supports running up from the pillion foot peg mounts the same as Eagle & Deanos.
My bike had the early type rack with a single support tube that didn’t like jumping erosion humps with all the gear loaded on and started to crack. Tryhard has modified his older style racks as well to prevent failure on a ride. 😆Mickp

Yes great point Mick, I am sure now that the PDS myth comes from peeps riding around with the PDS not setup correctly. I dont think its as good as a linkage rear end but its not bad setup. I am pleasantly surprised how good the PDS is on the rear of that 530 I have been riding, it has been done over by Teknik’s and is pretty damn good the progressive spring and more so the valving as I think Lefty pointed out at the grass track (it is good). Funny how we rush out and put pipes etc on and miss out on the benefits of a safer, faster and smoother ride

MickpCheers Mick… Bike suspension was done in the purchase…
I’ll provide more detail in the my garage thread I’ll start this weekend… I’ll still need a couple upgrades i.e.; pivot pegz and possibly damper down the track.

Look at the dampering (valves and shiming) when you save your money up Krusty makes a far bigger change than springs we have noticed with Lefty’s and Deejays bikes
Bet your excited :woohoo:

Mate not trying to justify anything. The facts are that if a rider (eg. Lefty) and his gear weights less then someone heavier, than the overall weight on the subframe is the same. If you take this as a personal attack well I am sorry but I do find it a rich as you will hang shit on anybody given a chance.
March 15, 2012 at 2:49 pm #218178Attack nah  will take better than that
as you have said correctly I give shit to one and all and receive all that I give as I should and expect return serve from those I stir
If you are prepared to live by the sword be prepared to die by the sword I always say. I guess I was wondering why your explanation went that way I maybe expected something technically based but that doesnt matter
. I know who and what I am, yes I am fat but that’s better than ugly because I can diet
As for the rest well I went upon what I read and was told by the sales people, thats the beauty of an open forum and that was the rear of the bike is a weak point and weaker than full framed adventure bikes ok. I just said that. All bikes have their weaker points. Cush drive rubbers on the Tenere, Valves on a CRF maybe, etc. The 690 wasnt designed for hard adventure riding look it up on the net (google it) thats all that I was trying to say. Besides who makes an adv bike with a 12litre tank? and a plastic rear end  I also added that I thought as good as the fairing and twin tank setup looks I said I think tanks would better if they were bigger. I like the 690 and reckon its the FI version of my beloved XR650R not a single trail bike not an adventure bike (XR’s have an alloy sub frame, weak point when setup as an adv bike as well
)
If Eags gets out on Sunday come along if you can we will have a feed at St Aburns no misunderstanding regarding what is and how its written
