AnonymousNice review so far Mal. I have to say I was never interested in these things and thought they weren’t for me until rode the Berg at Louee. It was hard to notice it was even there and I doubt I would have done if I were not told prior to the ride.
I think they would be a great device to ‘simple up’ riding a bike in most cases which would leave your brain free to concentrate on other things.
That said I wouldn’t have one myself, especially not for the money they ask for them. I also think once you learn bikes enough, riding them, at least as far as the controls are concerned, just ‘happens’ like when you drive your car to work. I don’t think ‘oh I need this gear or this much clutch or this much throttle/front brake/back brake etc., it just happens.
Maybe MTB’ers like STM would be keen for the left hand rear brake. I consider myself a MTB’er (at least in recent years) but wouldn’t want the back brake up where the clutch should be. Then again I’ve seen STM ride
I’ll keep an eye out here for your continued views Mal, I’m glad you seem happy so far though

If you stall going down a hill is there enough centrifical force to throw the balls out (maybe by selecting a higher gear) to “clutch start”
Just a thought
Cheers
Murph the surfJanuary 6, 2010 at 7:43 am #167264Murph you would select a “lower gear” to increase the revs and then the engine should be able to be bump started
Ollie
WRONG OLLIE WRONG!! YOU CANT BUMP START A REKLUSE EQUIPED BIKE!!
just thought I would clear that up
January 6, 2010 at 8:50 am #167269Murph the manufactures opinion (manual) says that you will not be able the bump start the bike. It is a centrifugal clutch and relies on the engine to be rotating to create the centrifugal force to move the balls and apply pressure to the friction discs. So I would say the manualis correct. But I will test your question this weekend at home as I have a hill or two for that.
January 6, 2010 at 9:32 am #167273Thanks Ollie, your right down shift to increase the revs
Let us know what happens Mal
Just weighing up the pros and cons
I know I sometimes on the odd occasion “bump start” the Kato but I guess its not really an issue unless you break or lose the kick starter
Cheers

I don’t think you are the one to be giving input to braking issues. I have seen you descend and you might as well just rip both brakes off and save yourself some weight you crazy bastard. I still smile when I think about the way you came down that lose steep mother. Almost as vividly as I remember the way you filled me in on the way back up.

January 6, 2010 at 10:04 am #167270Sorry Murph but Mal and the manual are right

Ollie and Mal are correct, no to the bump start, bad news for anyone with electric start only (new Bergs) no way to restart if the electric leg fails

I still laugh when I think about you riding the wall of death (twice!) on the widowmaker!
I’m surprised that you can’t bump start the rekluse at all. Like Ollie pointed out, surely with a decent size hill and 1st gear you would have thought you would get enough centrical force.
January 7, 2010 at 12:10 am #167323No Moto it wouldnt matter how fast or what gear you are in it still will not start as the engine is effectively detached from the clutch.remember it needs engine revolutions for it to engage not the other way around.

AnonymousAhhh…..another reason not to spend $1200 on one then

AnonymousYes, if you buy one overseas.
Also, if you read my previous post you will see that I have ridden a bike with one
January 7, 2010 at 12:39 am #167338I believe that Suttos adjusted the price to suit the current Aussie dollar after there was a bit of a spray on DBW about it not following the changing dollar. A good move I reckon – I don’t know of any other retailer in the industry that has done that.
