Anyone had experience with Rally Raid D908 tyres?

I hate the rears , shittiest tyre in sand you will ever use on any rim narrower than a 950 Adv rim .

Fronts are OK when fresh , once they loose their sharp edges they are below average for grip and they also scallop pretty seriously .

They will lock up and slide through a T intersection just like any other tyre mate

Good to have you home Jeffro, shame I won’t be able to catch up mate, maybe next time.

    Hey there Jeffro,

    Nice 690 there mate!

As for the 908’s I have been using them of late on my KTM 640. The fronts are quite soft in their knobs and tent to squirm under the front and give you a little un settled feel until you get used to it, however the wear rat is not too bad. if I can get hold of a MX-71 Dunlop before the High Country I will change it as I used one during a recent ride with TB and loved it.

As for the rear they seem to wear ok, however once you get to around 30 to 40% worn and lose the radial grooves in the blocks they become a bit of a paddle tyre where braking and drive is still ok, however there is very little lateral grip. The last one I used I grooved the blocks and it was heaps better, however the wear rate went through the roof. Using a Michelin UHD tube you can run low pressures as they have quite a stiff side wall and good puncture resistance.

I hope this helps as they are quite expensive. Best value for money is a Dunlop 606 Rear IMO.

    Cheers, Lefty B)

    Thanks Lefty,

I will give them a test run tomorrow if the weather is ok. I have only done a little bit of dirt so far and wasn’t really impressed but the pressures were around 25psi so not a fair test I don’t think. On the road once you get over 100kph the front is all over the place shaking the whole bike. I have experienced it before on other bikes and tyres but nowhere near as bad as this was.
If I am not happy with them I will throw a set of the 606’s at it. Will need to get the suspension done as well the guy that had it had tekniks set it up for h and he is apparently much smaller than me, probably won’t get time before the high country thouhh

    Hey Jeffro,
Just make sure you balance the tyres. This is probably the shaking that you are experiencing.
    Front 18-22psi Rear 12-16psi (Don’t tell TB though!! ;) )
    Cheers,
    Lefty

The wheels are balanced Lefty. It is not so much a vibration type shake it is where the bars wobble back and forth sort of like a high speed wobble.

 maybe 690 head shake mate. have you got a steering damper?
640 seems to be ok, but I have never ridden a 690.

    Left one ;)

Rims balanced maybe, but have they been re balanced since fitting the new rubber ?? Could that be the difference
I haven`t rebalanced mine since fitting new tyres the past 4 changes of the front, but have had no evidence of shake (I do have a damper fitted though)

    Hey Jeffro,
I will throw in my screwdrivers I use to adjust the clickers etc into the backpack for tomorrow if you want.
I have the settings as far as standard, sport and full load if that is any use in the short term before getting the suspension retuned

The preload and sag adjustments would be out for you too mate, that makes a big difference to the rear (especially if old mate was a small bloke)

I can email you the pdf file for the workshop manuals if you don’t have them also ;)
Pm me you email address mate and I`ll send those tonight

    #256209

Thanks mate but I have the manual with the settings.

    All good then ;)

We played with the clickers & HS rebound when Deano first got his on a ride one day and he was more comfortable with the results.

Al is coming tomorrow , See ya at 9am mate B)

No heated grips for me on the Tenere. I could take the Trumpy which has Oxford heated grips, but I’ve just put a set of 606’s on the Ten so I’ll just have to man up and use a secret weapon from my mountaineering days. Much cheaper at 4 bucks a pop too.

I’ll be cruising down from the Northern Beaches in Sydney on Thursday if anyone wants to hook up.
